7 January 2013 at 12:39 am #99379Very good memories watching him and the rest of the team with mi dad on the corner wall as you went on Springfield park.
7 January 2013 at 1:09 am #99381With such good memories and him being some people’s hero then let’s at least get his name right. It’s Jeff Wright
7 January 2013 at 1:11 am #99382Jeff Wright was the original Jordi Gomez.
7 January 2013 at 1:26 am #99385I’d like to say .latics answer for Glen Hoddle . :woohoo: Jeff that is not Geoff.
7 January 2013 at 2:06 am #99392Jeff Wright was the original Jordi Gomez. He certainly was. I can hear the groans as if it was yesterday. Oh, actually there was the same groans yesterday.
7 January 2013 at 2:20 am #99394I posted this on another threa a while ago but …..
I remember standing on the popular side at Springfield Park in the very early 80’s watching 2 blokes nearly come to blows over the merits of Jeff Wright as a footballer.
Like Gomez,Wright had a decent touch and tried things that didn’t always come off,but like Gomez as he didn’t run 20 yards to tackle someone or chop them off at the knees, the majority didn’t like him.
This one bloke was really ripping into Wright, the other told him to shut up and it kicked off.As he was dragged off by his mates the first bloke was screaming “You’re a Wright lover” into the other guys face as though he should have been taken behind the main stand and shot for thinking Wright was a decent footballer.
I always thought Purdie and Corrigan were the weak links in that side – but that’a a different argument !!

Yes nothing much changes from those days to today most fickle Wigan fans would much sooner see a headless chicken type footballer than technical type player
7 January 2013 at 2:31 am #99396I can tell you it was far worse in them days being a kid surrounded by mi dad and his mates ,it was 90 mins of abuse and threating never to watch another game again. Then next week same old faces stood in same spot whinging about the same players.Bring back Peter Houghton.

I think it’s taken Gomez a long time to get to grips with the Premiership, but right now I’d say he’s our most creative player by far. Not his fault there’s rarely anyone else making a good run, increasing the odds of him getting caught in possession or meaning he has to pass it sideways or backwards.
