Certain players can be made to look bad because those around them simply dont read the said players thoughts.Jeff was castigated at times for doing something good because his teammate was too slow or to clumsy to finish off Jeffs good work.Gomez suffers the same at times.I think if you put Jordi in a team full of quality players you would see a different Gomez.I really liked Jeff , he took loads of stick at times but kept on doing his bit.
Jeff Wright
Paul Cook
Michael O’Neil
Roberto Martinez
Jordi Gomez…A long line of misunderstood and under-estimated footballers
One you are missing there Griff, and is arguably the best of the lot is Kevin Langley.
Yeah, but I don’t think he got as much abuse/polarisded opinion like the others, if I recall correctly. That’s why I left Tony Kelly off ths list. A similar type of player but not villified for it like the others.

Always seem to want to be in the thick of it.

I’m a passionate fan, I cant help it ! ;)
9 January 2013 at 2:14 am #99639Haven’t been on here for many a moon but can’t resist a Jeff Wright debate. He really was the Jordi of his day- there were just fewer people to shout abuse at him and the people who could see what he was doing. To me he was the nearest thing to an artist that we had. He could really see a pass but they didn’t always come off – hence him staying with lower league Wigan. He had a great game at Everton in the cup and I kept a report from one of the Sunday’s that said he was the classiest player on the pitch. what happened to him ? Last heard of back in Alston. Footnote : when he first signed from Netherfield he worked at Heinz- be surprised if Jordi will be doing anything extra.
9 January 2013 at 12:29 pm #99651Whatever heppened to the Jeff Wright Appreciation Society? Never heard of em after they donated the matchball around 79/80.

I had same the argument with Tyldesley Latic a while back.
I totally agree with that if you put Gomez in a good side he’d look a great player.
And I’ll have to disagree – again.
I don’t think Gomez warrants the stick he gets & I think the last couple of games I’ve seen when he’s come on as sub (Arsenal & United) have led to an improvement in Latics performance, but he is no more than an average squad player going off what I’ve seen of him over the last 3 & a half years (IMO of course)
To say he’d look a great player in say Man United’s side or a “good” side like Everton is IMO stretching the boundaries of reality somewhat though.
He is a bit part player for Wigan Athletic because that’s where his talent deserves to be. We’ve got no club’s knocking on the door wanting to sign him because they think that whilst he looks average for Latics with their better players he’ll become good. He didn’t make it at Barcelona which is nothing to be ashamed of but he’ll have been surrounded by “great” players so by this theory they’d have brought his game on. He then went to Espanyol who at the time were a half decent side & he didn;t make it there either.
In fact he only came to prominence when he started playing lower level English football with & against players who were of a lower standard than those he currently plays with & against.
I don’t see him getting stick coz he tries to play a visionary ball that his colleagues are too dumb to read, I see him getting stick because (at times) he’s too slow & pedestrian both in mind & body to take advantage of situations which can result in either Latics attacks breaking down or the opposition being able to get back & defend. I know some say he rarely gives the ball away but I see him getting caught in possession as he holds play up more than some others. And yes he also gets stick coz he can appear to be unwilling to go into 50-50 challenges.Just my opinion like but if he was a good player some manager from a “good” team would have seen that & they’d have brought him in. They don’t so they haven’t – he is where he deserves to be. On the bench at Latics

I’m not going down this path again as we did it death last time, but I don’t think he will get spotted because a) he doesn’t play often enough b) when he plays he doesn’t get chance to showroom his ability because of the team around him c)the teams that he could thrive at already have better players in that position (I’m not saying he’s the best at what he does, just that he could look a much better player)
Anyway, I’ll end it there as we’ll just disagree again and it’s pointless continuing.
