…c’mon how many times have you heard the phrase “He had a good Captains game”?

Honestly? Outside of a cricket ground – never! I know what you’re getting at, but I’ve never heard anyone actually say it
That would be a Captain’s Innings – not what I said. You must move in small circles
Why must I move in small circles, though I’m certainly going round in some ever-decreasing ones this afternoon?

And no it wouldn’t be a captain’s innings. That would be if he had been batting. What if he had spent a day in the field organising bowling changes and field settings? Either way, it’s academic – I’ve never heard anyone say it.
It’s the mental picture I get of you. Further, had you moved in larger circles you may have heard the term – it’s well known among those who frequent a variety of sporting events.

So, now that we all know what you actually don’t know; please tell us all – what is your understanding of what a Captain’s role is in a football team.
Well, it isn’t to nominate a regular penalty taker, I’ll tell you that much.

Well known phrase? I don’t think so. You’re struggling with this now, aren’t you?
Indeed, there is only so long I can dumb down a conversation.

You see, you are back to your old ways again – which is, just because you haven’t heard it very often it mustn’t be so. Then of course there’s your arrogance suggesting that there was no need to read up on a subject, because of course, you have assimilated everything that has been written on the game.

Look, if you don’t understand the subject, that’s ok with me – just admit it and we’ll move on. I’ll refresh your memory, as you appear to be struggling a little here:

I said (in a reply to The Egg): “Now then, back to what I was saying earlier – what we lack on the field, in my opinion, is someone who has those qualities to encourage, motivate, guide and lead on the field – as well as take the tough decisions on who takes a penalty or a free kick. Mixing and matching the Captain on a game-by-game basis is not sending out the right message to the players who should look to a leader for inspiration and leadership on the pitch.

    That was my point”

So,I’ll ask you again – what is your understanding of what a Captain’s role is in a football team?
Oh aye, cos the day I jump to a demand to answer a question from anyone on this forum is the day I pack it all in. You flatter yourself if you think you can force me into continuing this boring discussion.

I joined in this thread for one reason only. That is to say – IMO – it should not be the captain who chooses a football club’s regular penalty taker, it should be the manager. You’ve then taken it all round the houses to talk about spurious phrases that may not may not be heard at various sporting events, a topic in which I have no interest whatsoever.

I am thoroughly bored with it now. Really.
No you didn’t.

You don’t jump because you know that your answer will show you up, further, you are the one who went on a verbal walkabout.

You revert to the old tired “I’m bored with it now” routine.

Give it a rest man – it is we who are bored.

No, really.I am bored with it. And you really can think what you want and be as pleased with your little old self as you like. Go and have a quick tug if you’re that pleased with yourself. If you can still manage it.

You’re like a polite version of that other senile old get who supports United.

Its just a shame really that our supporters constantly slagged off/slated/berated/bemoaned etc, etc, one of the better penalty takers this club has ever had & probably would have scored our last 2 pens.

      #134579
I always think that a forward should take them, their forte is or should be scoring goals. I was screaming for Delort to take that at Blackburn. Get him off the mark and get his confidence right from day 1. No pro should miss from 12 yards but when you see our players practicing the one two and shoot in the pre game warm up, the strike rate is about 15%.

But there are plenty of defenders who regularly take/took penalties:

Leighton Baines, Julian Dicks, Phil Neal, Dennis Irwin, Graham Alexander, Ian Harte etc.

Strikers usually don’t have time to think before shooting, so I think it’s just a matter of confidence as most professional players have enough skill to walk up and kick a ball from twelve yards into the part of the goal they intend it to go into.

      Manager

Griff, I give in, I couldn’t be manager with a captain like this mon. I’d be in jail for murder within one training session.
You can stick the managers job up yer arse, he can have it. I’m sticking to swearing in front of kids and getting Roger in the world eleven squad.

We should be able to bring Jordi back, just for penalties and free-kicks. It’s not as if he’s doing much up at Sunderland, is he?

You could lower your sights and go for this job as a starter:-

        Get your pom poms out

They advertised a junior journalist-type role the other day. I was thinking of applying* for that myself. if you got the girls coaching job we could have had our dinner together in the canteen every day. How good would that be? ;)

        * I wasn’t really thinking of applying

All I’ll say on this matter is that if one of our players is running in on goal with just the keeper to beat, I would sooner it be Riera, Delort or Fortune rather than Barnett, Boyce or KIernan.

            From Matlock to ManU
            What a journey!

It sounds like a good opportunity for both of us to get a foot in the door.
I am not sure whether my clearance would come through okay as my character has been assassinated over the last few years with a smear campaign caused by daring to sit directly in front of a foul mouthed yob. Unfortunately mud sticks and it might go against me, but I am tempted to give it ago.

If you have a change of heart and decide to have a bash at it you will have to agree to write good things about my team, its formation (442) and my squad rotation ideas, or I won’t share my chips with you at dinnertime.
If you do, I’ll change all the player names on the shirts to Roberto and Jordi, with one exception, the one who runs about most can have their name changed to Roger.

To be fair, I think Thirty’s “an” was a typo. It’s not up there with your of/have grammar crime which, I agree, is heinous.
