I have decided to examine my views on martinez this season, most people on here support him and say what he is doing is the correct way forward, it is claimed the way his teams play football is the right way and we are making progress, the majority seem to support this opinion and slate anybody not in that camp, so for this reason i have come to the conclusion it must be me who is wrong.
After yesterday the doubts i have always had came once again to the surface, martinez is now into his third season as manager and i am afraid i dont see any progress what so ever, can anyone please explain my doubts and why i should continue to give martinez the benefit of my doubt when i see lethargic, error ridden play from a team playing its first game of the season, who looked a yard short of the pace and totally unfit, who didnt seem able or bothered to mix it with an enthusiastic talentless side that should have been dispatched with ease.
The worst factor in all this is if we are making progress why is is gomez still in martinez’s plans, when he makes any of previous managers “deadwood” look like a piece of antique chippendale furniture.

Or you could look at it again and see Martinez team playing a promoted team, which is never easy on the first game, unless your Bolton that is, they have lots of engery and enthusiasm. A simple mistake before half time let them back in. We didnt get beat 4-0 like last year.

Still need some extra quality in the squad and we started without our 2 best players.

After being proved wrong by Bobby not once but twice I am trying this season to hold off on any criticisms I may have of him (not sure how long it’ll last!!! ;) )
The only comment I will make of Saturdays game (only saw the extended highlights as I was running the line in a NWCL game) was that it looked like the inability of the team to convert chances that came there way was still there & as Bobby is now saying he needs just 2 signings (& not the 3 he mentioned last week) I am assuming that he is happy with the fella from Strasbourg as his replacement for Boselli so it looks like as we were for strikers & as such the same potential issue of not converting enough chances.
The odd error from players, looking a bit jittery, a bit short of match practice i can accept at this stage of the season & I aint reading much into not beating a team who don’t look much kop (Latics weren’t the only team who didn’t get the result you’d have expected over the weekend).

My worry from the weekend is from Bobby’s post match comments. Now I know I only read a snippet of what he probably said & it doesn’t always come across in print the way it was meant to when spoken but its a bit worrying when the manager makes a statement:
“We are still looking for two players…. I don’t know what players we are going to bring in, that is the reality”
I don’t expect Bobby to state publicly who he is going to bring in or who he is targeting but it does worry me slightly that after saying all summer that our targets were players they had been watching long term & having 3 months to get them, he is now appearing to say he doesn’t know who he is gonna target.
Just thought it was an odd thing to say & was hoping it got lost in translation between the Spanish in his head & the English that came out of his mouth

Lets not forget that was the 1st game for norwich in the top flight for quite a while, they came here buzzing, they gave their best it wont get any better for them, yet they did not trouble us too much, we will get better we have more experience and have better players to come bk in, Lopez will not make a premiership centre half in the memory of man, in my opinion, Alcaraz will sort the middle out. Rodders should of played in place of Gomez and Di Santo had his best game for us ever, give him a chance you never know.

Di Santo did have a good game but he is not a goal scorer not my opinion but a fact. And in a team which struggles for goals he cannot play as the lone striker.

The window is not shut yet and we need to get someone in who knows were the net is.

Very fair reflection of the game. :text-goodpost: .
Di Santo was a handfull and won everything, should have had another pen!Hope Bobby gives him alittle run.

is that the same “Bobby” who substituted him immediately after he missed a headed chance instead of waiting another 5 minutes or so ?
that would have done the lads confidence the world of good.
is that another example of what an amazing manager we have ?

Yes ,the same Bobby who was lambasted on here for making substitutions with five minutes to go last season any how the first person who should have been hauled off saturday was Mccarthy very poor performance in my opinion

            #70069

McCarthey was poor on Saturday, even though Gomez was awful on the ball, our midfield went to bits when he went off.

Playing Gomez and Di Santo reminds me of Einsteins definition of insanity: “doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result”.

Despite being given chance after chance Gomez has been substituted practically every game he has played. He is too slow to play football at this level. Time and again he slows up play for us meaning players have to check their runs and gives cant tackle a fish supper.

Di Santo has now appeared in 70 games in this country, starting 28 games in this country and has scored a massive 2 goals in total. Though his work rate cannot be questioned his ability to hold the ball up, his heading ability and his ability to find the target has been pretty woeful from the games he has played for us. 45 minutes of huffing and puffing and a bit of gamesmanship for the penalty wont change my opinion. When is enough enough with these two?

Alcaraz will sort the middle out

i find it bizarre how many people are saying something similar.
Alcaraz may well be better than Lopez (although I haven’t seen enough of Lopez to comment) but I personally find Alcaraz to be a liability. When he has his head screwed on he’s a good un but at numerous points in games you’ll find him coming out of position to deal with the ball in an area that someone else has covered & it leaves us exposed. His distribution is poor too.
I had the debate on here about Alcaraz at the back end of last season so I aint gonna go over old ground with the example but these aren’t just one offs they happen during every game I see of his. Ahh what the hell I will give some examples
The away game at Sunderland when someone broke down the left & Caldwell was covering. Alcaraz left the bloke he was marking to go to the bloke with the ball who then crossed it to the guy Alcaraz had been marking who then scored. Someone on here argued that wasn’t Alcaraz being poor but him having no confidence in his other defenders & trying to do their jobs for them (coveniently forgetting his own)
Another is what the hell he was doing in the position he was to make the challenge he made on Darren Fletcher at Old Trafford that earnt him a red card
Lets not forget why Steve Caldwell nearly came to blows with him during one game
IMO these sort of recurring mistakes ruin the good work he does do

Anyway, my rather lengthy point was that whilst his return may improve the defence a bit he creates far too many problems himself to be able to “sort the middle out”

The problem is that faced with the squad Bobby has to choose from & a Rodallega who isn’t match fit (presumably) there was very little option but to play Gomez on Saturday.
McCarthy has been played there & has been poor. Stam has been played there & has been poor.
The only other option I could see before the game was to play Jones on the right & for him to cut inside with this “sweet left foot” Bobby was taking about when he signed

Nail. The. Hit. The. Head. On.

I don’t expect to see Gomez starting once Hugo is back and the Di Santo/Hugo playing/positioning will largely depend on who (if) we bring someone else in.

I see Roberto said he thnks we are two players light at the moment which must presumably include at elast one striking option. I think Dicko is not seen as one for throwing in right now and is not the replacement for Boselli.

Not fact…… its still your opinion although largely backed by statistics…

He did good and if plays like that everygame he will get goals!

              I’d disagree with that Griff.

Lets face it, Boselli was 4th in line for the striker’s position behind Rodallega, Sammon & Di Santo so i think that Dicko is his replacement & will be used about as much as Boselli would have been had he not been farmed out.
I don’t think its any coincidence that before Dicko put pen to paper we were 3 players light & now its 2
Bobby also specifically mentioned having not replaced N’Zogbia & Cleverley neither of whom were striking options

On the other hand he did of course bid for Odinwengie last week & when asked post match whether a player was being sought to replace Rodallega he said “no it would be an addition”

The problem is if our manager openly admits that he doesn’t know who he is going to bring in (apparently he only knows the character of the players he wants) we haven’t got a cat in hells chance of knowing!!
