All depends on the new manager.
Assuming its not barrow he will want his own squad and hopefully coaching staff and assistant.
There will be offers for our best players from other clubs and this will be our biggest problem keeping hold of our better players, especially when the club see the pound signs!24 April 2017 at 5:43 pm #158399Does anyone this would be a good set up for next season if we keep them all.m
1-gilks
2-Daniels
3-Warnock
4-Morgan/Buxton
5-burn
6-morsy
7-power
8-colclough/Gilbey
9-Jacobs
10-Grigg
11-bogleWarnock, Power and Jacobs can be omitted from that line up. Replace them with Reece James, Nick Powell and Alex Gilbey and you are not far off a decent team. Incidentally, that team would easily have stayed up this season.

Shows how opinions differ.I also think McDOnald has been one of our best players this season. Looks a class above most of our other midfielders, and wins a lot of ball back.
But on the flip-side, I don’t rate Reece James. He looks to either cut inside himself or play the ball inside too much for my liking. Rarely looks to beat the man on the outside – which, if you’re not playing without out-and-out wingers, is what you want your full backs to do.
We played much better last season when Warnock replaced him.
24 April 2017 at 8:46 pm #158403Agree about McDonald, good engine, gets about and gets stuck in. Trouble is again this season we have too many of those types of midfielder playing at the same time .. Can you see any other player that we have who can “turn a game” with a flash of brilliance, other than Powell ? We have no one and the midfields job this year has to be to contain, rather than be creative .. then if they are on the odd occasion creative who is up top to finish the job ?
other massive, massive mistake contributing to where we are now is only having 1 or 2 strikers for the majority of the season. As said above, even if we do create a chance, then with no fit strikers we are never going to score. If Bogle and/or Grigg were fit, and Obertan playing on the Wing when Barrow took over Im of the opinion we would have had more wins and only be a point or 3 away from getting out of the drop zone
Im optimistic about winning league 1 again next season if we keep the “better” players and change of manager/formation we wont be that far off ..

I like Warnock, but he doesn’t have the legs anymore to get up the wing, I just think Reece James would be a better long term prospect and should be raring to go after a full season out. Keep Warnock for cover and experience possibly.
As I have said, McDonald dos his job, but he is boring and is just an extra defender pushed up a bit.
I think he epitomises the season we have had, too cautious, negative and boring.
We need more flair and attack minded midfielders and let the defenders do the boring defensive work.25 April 2017 at 1:24 am #158408One position to be filled and that’s left wing. Someone who had the impact of Yanic but who can put a decent cross in. Like the idea of a twin partnership up top but very much doubt we would go for this but who knows if we get the right man.
25 April 2017 at 1:42 am #158409Shaun McDonald has been an excellent servant to Wigan athletic and I fear we will lose him.
He always stays on pitch and applauds the fans every game.
He clearly is committed and gives everything good luck to him not sure what contract he on or when it expires but players like Shaun in my opinion are the players any club should be privaged to have.25 April 2017 at 9:32 pm #158410Out of the list (& i hope im wrong), i can see powell being the main one to go.
26 April 2017 at 12:21 am #158411Out of all the squad, he is the one that would command a half-decent fee if a Championship club was to come in for him. There are rumours that he isn’t that committed to knuckling down and doesn’t want to leave the NW, which may help keep him.
That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if he left for around £3m, which of course would be reported as “undisclosed”. He came on a free, and therefore some would consider it good business, whereas others would see it as admitting defeat.

Two teams capable of winning league 1 in fact with a proper manager also capable of being competitive in the championshipIf your squad is right and we keep Burn Buxton and Powell why be negative again and have one up top?. Burn and Buxton will breeze through Div 1 and if Powell is fit why not give him a free role in centre midfield and have Grigg and Bogle terrorising defences. In an attacking side they should look to score around the 35 mark between them. Lets defend from the front instead of playing deep allowing teams to press us. We have the players at this time to waltz div 1 next season if only we can keep them. Fingers crossed that
A. We keep our best players
B. We go after teams instead of being cautious.
26 April 2017 at 6:49 pm #158419One up top doesn’t have to be negative especially with 3 attacking midfielders behind but that debates been flogged to death on here.
The formation should be flexible and that team could easily change to the good old 442
26 April 2017 at 7:16 pm #158425One up top isn’t a problem if you have attacking midfielders, to support the front man.
Our problem is we don’t.26 April 2017 at 8:05 pm #158426We do they just haven’t been allowed to
