One up top doesn’t have to be negative especially with 3 attacking midfielders behind but that debates been flogged to death on here.

The formation should be flexible and that team could easily change to the good old 442

Further more, ‘one up top’ is the norm these days – with all but 3 of the Premier League teams playing it, and over half the Championship teams.

So Sharpe will have to look far and wide* if he is to find a manager who our grumbling masses deem good enough for the club, and who favours a rigid 4-4-2 formation.

Yes but Leicester won the league playing it and Burnley play it.

Mike Bassett played it in the World Cup too.

One up top isn’t a problem if you have attacking midfielders, to support the front man.
        Our problem is we don’t.

If we keep him, I think Morsy will be a great attacking midfielder in league one. I also expect Byrne to come into his own as a playmaker too. Jacobs needs a good season and a few goals and if fit, Gilbey can be a force as well.

And if we can keep Powell…well, he can be immense for us next season. So much potential.

Just need a manager to…er…manage them!

In the games Grigg and Bogle played this season we actually played with NONE up top as they spent most of the time in the centre circle or out on the friggin wing going to collect the ball themselves.

I don’t mind playing with a loan striker if he is allowed to play as a striker and he is supported by an attacking midfield who support him.

A fit Nick Powell hopefully will provide the support needed with Morsey, Colclough and Gilbey chipping in.

But we are not in the Premier league any more nor the Championship probably. So why not use the quality players (as long as they stay) to their full potential. Negative play has got us relegated this season so why would we continue with it in div 1.

Not too sure anymore this 1/0 up top has grown on me. There has been some real exhibition football again this season just like there was two years ago with MAF dazzling us. Bring back Jason Scotland next year and he can show us how to play this exhibition stuff at its best.

Serious question: do you watch any other football apart from Wigan matches?

Occasionally very occasionally the hyped up greed league, no European leagues and no European Champions or Europa League games, some FA Cup or League Cup highlights or bits of live cup games. Couldn’t sit through 90 minutes of other clubs live games.Watch England competition games but not their friendlies.
If that means I know F all about football or tactics or formations or the game, so be it.
One love WAFC, don’t give a shit really about other clubs or matches.
If they all play such amazing stuff with these modern tactics why as it not worked for us and why have we been so drab for the last eight years then?

Wasn’t questioning your knowledge of football.

What I was getting at is, if you watch a lot of football these days you’ll see how one striker is the norm and teams playing with one striker quite often play exciting football.

We saw glimpses of it under Martinez and Rosler, but most of our failing have been down to poor managerial choices – in my opinion.

I get that SW but in the lower reaches teams are more direct and basic. RM set us up to stay in the Prem and did a good job and went with the norm one up top but I would like to think that had he stayed after relegation he would have adapted to a more attacking formation. The way we play just allows opponents to play a high line and puts us on the back foot. Two strikers isn’t just about attack it pushes your opponents back and stops them pressing too easily. I’ve always said I don’t like wing backs coz we simply haven’t got players good enough or fit enough to make proper use of them like the better quality guys in the Prem can. Packing the midfield entices teams to play hoof ball over the top by passing midfield and hitting the channels. In div 1 we will have the better players if we don’t shackle them by negative tactics. All we have heard is that players like Power and McDonald are no good when they have been playing the way they have been coached. We are making the game too complicated for ourselves instead of letting the lads express themselves and playing in their comfort zone. Imagine if we keep our stars how easily Burn, Buxton Warnock etc will find it to defend in a typical back four. We have the players to romp away with that league Jewell style but I doubt we will change so it could be a needless struggle just as relegation has been needless this time. My opinion only.
