The thing is, Espinoza’s not really a creative player – his best position is as a defensive or holding midfielder, and his value comes from his flexibility (able to play left back, other midfield positions if necessary) and that he does the dirty work (or running around like a chicken) that allows the creative midfielders to get forward and not have to worry about tracking back as much – as let’s face it, the Mc’s and even Maloney don’t really do.

That’s why I’d always at least have him as a sub, if not starting. I’m not sure he’s always been played in his best position precisely because of his flexibility (& I think that flexibility is why Martinez brought him on). Last year, I would have always paired him & Gomez together, as I think they would have been excellent complements for each other – Gomez with the technical ability & creativity, and Espinoza with the energy & ball winning skills to help cover for Gomez’s defects.

Admittedly, I am an Espinoza fan from watching him play here in the US and in CONCACAF qualifying. That said, I think you can definitely make the argument that there are 11 players on this team that are individually better than him. However, it’s not about how good all the individuals are, it’s about piecing together the 11 who will work best together – and that’s where I think there’s a place for Roger in the lineup.

Forshaw would be a far better player if he began to think more about going forward when on the ball. Time after time he would receive the ball and his first thoughts were go sideways and his second was go backwards, always taking the safer option rather than going forward.
For me, Taylor was the best player on the pitch for Wigan.

Geez our fans are fickle. Roger wasn’t great today though still his energy levels and effort were higher than any other midfielder. In the games he has played he has been in the best couple of players in 50% of them. At least try and be balanced.

Fickle? Me? Don’t think so. I’ve always thought he was no better than average.

My post had nothing to do with any other player so there’s no need to be balanced. I was deliberately talking about Espinoza to challenge those who reckon he’s only just behind Messi and Ronaldo in the running for the Ballon d’Or.

As for whoever it was who said he is in there for his tackling – I did’t see him do much of that either.

“You have to be on the ball to give it away”??? What is the point of that?

We can’t afford to have players who try hard yet produce nothing. Id rather have Gomez who ‘looked’ like he wasn’t trying yet contributed than Espinoza any day of the week. If you want people who can run about a lot but don’t pass to each other and hardly tackle, there’s a panful of them play with me on Thursday night at Robin Park.

I am a big Espinoza fan and I was also big Gomez fan, who incidentally got caught in possession at least 6-7 times a game.
It was the potential he had to thread that perfect pass or score from a free kick, that made me feel he was better being on the field than off it.

Its the same feeling I have with Roger.

Espinoza has decided to come out and explain why he felt the need to go back home. It was nothing to do with being home sick, it was because he was being frozen out.
Having now been given a chance, I can understand that the lad is trying his best to make a mark and stake a claim for a regular starting spot. In my opinion, he is trying to force things to happen rather than doing the simple things first.

I just hope Malky gives him decent run in the team to see if he can relax and show us the real Espinoza.

        What a journey!

I sincerely hope not. He isn’t good enough.

If he doesn’t get picked I think that settles the matter: four managers will have deemed him not good enough (he only got into Martinez’s team by filling in as a left-wingback)

Who have the last 4 managers thought are good enough. Look back at the line ups particularly under Rosler. Is there any player we can honestly say has held down a regular place.

Anyway you and your mate say he’s not good enough so that’s it then, Espinoza out!

          Only Scott Carson.

There are many people I know who also don’t rate Espinoza and who, like me, shook their heads in disbelief at the ‘Roger, Roger’ song and the rapturous applause he receives when coming on as a sub.

The same people who cheer for him and forgive him when he regularly gives the ball away also used to scream at Gomez / Teale / Landzaat etc. when they did it.

Sorry, he’s simply not good enough in my opinion. Never has been, never will be.

PS. there’s room in the Agreeing With Other People’s Opinion Club if you want to join.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think he is as bad as Standish does. However, neither do I think he is anywhere near as good as those who worship him as the answer to whatever question we are asking at the time.

As I say, he is average at best. On Saturday, he was woeful.

Both he and Forshaw had shockers on Saturday!

Eh? Did you watch the same Forshaw that I watched?

I thought he had his best game in a Wigan shirt.

I did Jonny and I didn’t rate him, neither did anyone else sat around me ! His passing was dire but not as dire as Roger’s! To be fair, he wouldn’t have had to up the ante too much to have his best game so far would he!

C’mon then Standish what’s the punch line ?

Surely that statement is not for real ?

To be fair, with McCann now back and Watson nearly ready for a starting position I think Roger will be back on the bench at best.

Looks like we have a new scapegoat in Forshaw.

Didn’t think he was all that bad, to be fair. He’s not likely to shine much playing in a defensive two, particularly when his partner, McCann, is a player with a tendency to get friend a bit more. That means he has to sit and do all the boring stuff that nobody appreciates.

Still, what do I know… I’m the only one who can’t see Espinoza’s nailed on £20m move to Chelsea coming off in January.
