        My thoughts exactly……..

Soon be 28 – a four year contract would take him into his thirties (sold after 3), couldn’t see us getting our money back. That’s the business part.

Fans part….I want players to come here to play under Roberto’s coaching and guidance. I know the game is full of mercenaries but there are better ways of doing this.

        Stuff him

Frustrating but not really a surprise, when have we ever had a great or even good transfer window???

As long as footballers want the kind of money that we can’t, or aren’t willing to, pay but other clubs can, then it will continue.

I’d guess that the ‘interest’ bit refers to what he’ll earn on his bank balance.

Before i start, my tin hat is on ;)

My problem with all this is that Wigan Athletic are an established Premier League club, and with that comes certain expectations. We are way off the mark when it comes to transfer budgets and wages, when compared to the rest of the clubs in the league, and even compared to some in the championship, and i know that Whelan is trying to run a tight ship and not pay out extortionate wages, but the answer to that is that were in the wrong league then. The premier league attracts global audiences, expecting to watch top players, and the TV money paid is to keep that sort of talent in the league, thus making consistently good viewing, thats what theyre paying for.
Wigan are taking that money, the same as Stoke, Fulham, Everton, Sunderland etc etc, but not investing it in top quality playing staff.
Its like a law firm getting 10 million a year to represent high profile cases, then sending a binman into court on £300 a week.

I think alot of fans that once admired plucky little Wigan, are now getting a bit pissed off with us hanging around, spending sweet nothing, empty stadium, and just being ‘there’. Its understandable when you first get promoted to not go berserk with big signings and big wages, but when youve had 7 years of stability, 7 years of tv money, and bought and sold players for massive profit, is it not a fair risk to up the wages a bit, to even compete with our peers, to make the odd marquee signing to attract more fans? I think its a piss take myself, there comes a point where as an owner you have to invest some coin into your business and make it grow, he wouldnt have done this in any other of his businesses, just let it bumble along making a loss or just breaking even, he’d identify improvements, invest where required and make a success out of it, in order to compete with his rivals, the way the club is structured we can’t compete, so whats the point of even being there other than pissing off everyone that isn’t daft enough to keep throwing their own hard earned into something that gives little to nothing back, unless you get off on the annual relegation survival scrap that quite frankly has become a boring and should in no way be classed as a ‘success’, its a point or three away from abject failure, and unless he starts running it like a PREMIER LEAGUE club and not a poundstretcher it’ll be the same until we plummet down the leagues back to where we ‘belong’.

goodpost Couldn’t have put it better myself, Excellent post. Whelan HAS to start investing in quality players and pay that “bit extra” in wages or else we are going to struggle.

I have had the same conversation with at least half a dozen Tics fans already. I don’t want us to do a Pompey but this bargain basement signing and struggling every year is shoite. We let 5 players leave 2 first teamers and an experienced keeper and we’ve signed a young kid from Aberdeen :woohoo:

I believe you have stated the bleeding obvious indeed the clubs like stoke (26000 average ),Fulham (24000) Everton (33000) Sunderland (36000)etc etc do get roughly the same money has we do but charge there fans a fortune for the right to view those matches and pull in far bigger revenue from shirt sales and other incomes like season tickets .Has pointed out every season we cant expect to compete with that revenue and wage structure

I think we are admired for battling it out with the big boys every season on the income that the club generate ask a Pompey fan how he his feeling right now ,the club could go out of business any day thanks to chasing the dream of going that extra mile and putting in money they did not have dont get me wrong I would love to move to the next level but at no way to the extent that we dont have a club to support .Indeed the club is a business but a different kind of business compared to others any business consistantly losing money over a seven year period would have gone after a couple of years having said that to ask DW to plow more money into a club that offers £20 for a ticket against the European champions for the opening game is pure folly dont you think he has plowed enough into WAFC over the years

I would imagine the views you have put across about people who throw there hard earned cash for a season ticket is really up to them isn’t it also with a rise in season ticket sales at the moment we seem to be attracting more ST holders in all the future at the moment looks good imo and the transfers will come in as there are a few weeks of the transfer window yet to go

So you dont think we could attract crowds like stoke and everton, if we signed better quality players and showed some ambition, and finished seventh in the league, above liverpool.
If we got to the FA cup semi at wembley?
If we employed players like jelavic, fellaini, baines, pienaar?

I’m sorry, but its up to the club to make the first move to bring the fans in, they produce a product that is entertaining, show ambition and be successfull, then more people will come to see that, its simple really. You cant say, right wiganers, you come and watch us struggle for 3 or 4 years, signing mainly unproven shit, and paying them in buttons, just surviving relegation each season, we’ll save up all your gate money and sign somebody decent with it.
Get real 34years, you’re either thick or blind or both, if your blind then listen to what the sane people are telling you, you’re having the piss ripped out of you, big time.

Why do you keep banging on about Portsmouth?
I’m not saying he should be reckless, i’m saying that he could compete with the teams around him, by making the odd decent signing, and by paying a bit more in wages, its hard enough to get players to come to Wigan, even harder when we pay less than most championship clubs.
Look, if Whelan wants a Premier league club, he should expect to pay premier league prices, it really is that simple, he’s just trying to do it on the cheap and it takes the piss, out of fans, out of the other clubs, out of Sky and any sponsers, they’e paying him to provide a service, and in my eyes he’s not fulfilling his remit.
i’m not arguing with you anymore, you’re obviously too blindly loyal to all things Wigan, it would be like banging my head against a wall, and i find you to be a bit of a knob.
