Scharner for me was indeed our weakest link tonight and constantly had me squirming in my seat ! I had a gut feeling that he would have a hand in any goals that we conceded and unfortunately I wasn’t wrong ! Great performance tonight and if we had just been more clinical we would have won ! If we play like that for the remainder of the season we should be ok but Scharner has been fairly poor of late and is a concern for me !
Caldwell back in the team :silly: :silly:
very unlucky tonite, deserved something out the game
Are you saying that you want Caldwell back in the team?
19 April 2013 at 2:48 am #110043He is cover for Ramis simple as ! He has been off key the last couple of games though, I don’t think many could deny that !
and ramis has been superman throughout
I was under the impression that Scharner was on loan to us due to the fact that our back line was very thin on the ground due to injuries and as Ramis plays where Scharner is playing at the moment I would guess that Scharner is indeed cover for him !

quite the opposite

Scharner was OK against City – better than he was in the Semi. One lapse of concentration after a period of sustained City pressure. He’s decent on the pitch, fans like him, and I’ll bet he’s a good voice in the dressing room. We’ve certainly been more cohesive defensively in recent games – although I accept that Alcaraz has been the main reason for that. :)

you say scharner has been off key, i merely make the point that ramis hasn’t covered himself in glory in all games he has played. Moreover, he never ever will be the quickest. I’ll take Scharner ….
19 April 2013 at 5:13 am #110061Ramis hasn’t made many mistakes since the first day of the season. And he’s contributed a couple of goals.
With Alcaraz injured so early in the season, and then injuries and suspensions for the other centre halves, Wigan would really have struggled without Ramis. I hope he makes a good recovery.
Figueroa has played almost all the season with quiet efficiency. I think we’ll miss him if he goes. Boyce has also had a long run in the back line this season, and could perhaps extend his career there.

Swansea (A), Stoke (H) for a start …before i even start to think …
best game – WHU (h) aerial football /no pace upfront – suited to him.
pace, positional awareness, tackling ability (Lopez better on all 3 fronts! …… would need games /experience) lacking for me. Sorry.

I’m with you regarding Ramis.
I know JPC01 doesn’t like him – and I’m sure you’ll not convince him otherwise, but I would have liked have seen Ramis play alongside Alcaraz, and I’d actually play Lopez instead of Figueroa, because as well as Figueroa has played, I still think he tends to ball watch and is easily caught out of position.

I think that Figs brings a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘He can play anywhere’ ! ;) As for Scharner, I just think he has been below par the last couple of games and I hope that it is just a temporary blip ! Just an opinion mind !

Don;t get me wrong, I think Scharner is a good Centre Half, I just rate Ramis more.19 April 2013 at 4:35 pm #110106I said after the QPR game that he needs a rest.
The guy has played 10 games straight after a season on the bench.
That said, I dont think there was much we coudl have done about Tevez’s goal.Just need to make sure we play like we did vs City that against the Hammers – they’re all but safe, so might take their foot off the gas after that solid draw vs Utd.
19 April 2013 at 4:43 pm #110107Problem is with West Ham they will try to play the wide game hoping they can get Carroll to cause problems in the air.
We seem to struggle against any team with width.
A problem that I think City will look to expose come the final and I will bet a penny to a pound of sh*t that Milner starts on the right.
19 April 2013 at 4:58 pm #110109The significant thing is that Martinez now has a choice of players;
Scharner Alcaraz Figueroa then Caldwell (Ramis) Golobart and Lopez plus Boyce.
He can now afford to rest players and make changes.
Alcaraz can probably stand up to Carroll on his own, but Caldwell could help too.
However, it would be better to cut off his supply from Jarvis on the left wing. Perhaps Boyce should drop back to play at right back.
19 April 2013 at 5:04 pm #110111If you’er sugesting Boyce dropping back to make a back 4 then I’d say that would be a mistake given what happened vs Liverpool.
Be interesting to see if Ben Watson makes the bench though to give us something different in midfield

. Pass me that tin hat fella.
Ben Watson was immense for us before his injury.
His period of bench warming certainly did him good and based on that short stint of performances I would of had him in the team every week over McCarthur.
If after his injury though he is back to frequently mis-hitting his passses another bench warming session may be in order.
