15 April 2010 at 4:26 pm #29688Not quite sure what you’re surprised at.
Let’s look at this logically. What is football? No – stay with me on this one.
For the vast bulk of the time and vast bulk of levels it’s a past-time that gets people out into the fresh air with a bit of healthy exercise. That’s why you would not heckle abuse at someone playing in the local park, or on a school-field. It exists for the participants.
But that’s not what we’re talking about here – there is another level – professional football, and in particular the Premier League. That does not exist for the health and well-being of the participants – it is part of the entertainment industry. It is a business like any other. We are the customers, the clubs are the service providers.
If a cowboy builder comes along and botches a job that you’ve paid for – do you say to him “well done” in case he gets a bit upset.
If you take your car to the garage and it breaks down 100 yards from the exit, do you go and give words of encouragement?
If a painter comes in and leaves half the wall unpainted do you shrug your shoulders and call him back in again next week without saying anything abotu the poor job, in case he decides not to try again.
If I don’t do my job properly, the job that I am being paid for, I expect to be pulled up about it, be told that this just isn’t good enough.
The way football fans can do that is by showing dissent. I’m not making a judgement here whether in any particular situation, last night or otherwise, that was correct or justified. But it is a right that supporters have – that the paying customer has – and the recipients of that criticism need to do something about it to rectify the impression that they are not doing their job that we are paying for.
And if their attitude is that people aren’t happy with what I’m doing, so stuff ’em, I’ll not bother, tells its own story.
Fair enough. For me though, the sight of him leaving the pitch was enough, didn’t feel the need to ironcially cheer him off too.

15 April 2010 at 8:06 pm #29706I always liked Scharner, someone who would pull his tripe out and stick a foot in,
But last neet he was a disgrace,i for one hope he does `a Koumas` and disappears!
15 April 2010 at 8:09 pm #29707You can always tell him if you want.

Fair play to him for having a “Guest Book”.But….I’m just lost for words at his “autograph card”    :o
15 April 2010 at 8:53 pm #29710Is there a prize on offer for the most outraged poster?
Talk about wrapping players in cotton wool, Sharners public berating of McCarthy was enough to justify him being brought off. He is obviously a proponent of humiliating people in public, in which case I guess he’ll have a stormer in our next game.
As for Martinez, I’ve backed him since day one, and still do, but he is doing himself no favours.
It’s been clear since well before Christmas Scotland isn’t a Premiership standard player, using him as an impact sub would help us and the player.
Quite why our only goalscorer is isolated out on the wing is beyond me, it hasn’t been working for quite some time. Before Moses arrived you could undersand Martinez’s thinking, but after settling in and making a great impact against Burnley, Moses still can’t get into this extremely poor team.
We rely too much on N’zogbia, when he does produce a great ball, we have no one in the box to knock it in!
We should have N’Zogbia and Moses on the wings and Rodallega through the middle, if we need a greater physical presence upfront, switch to 4-4-2 and stick Moreno up there too.
Then there’s Melchiot keeping Boyce out of the team, why?
Worst of all, the attitude of the players against Burnley and Portsmouth stunk from minute one, we aren’t good enough to waste a half before we generate some momentum.
15 April 2010 at 10:05 pm #29712its shop window time again,he was pulling out of challenges so he dosent get injured, and this weekend he will be shouting his mouth off saying this club that club want me.Didnt he play bruno in that film about the gay austrian fashion icon
15 April 2010 at 10:55 pm #29717Do you think he’ll spit his dummy and not appear for us again?
And for James to note – there was cheering at the DW tonight…. when that board was held up.
Straight down the tunnel he went. A legend in his own mind.
Yeah…Insulting our longest serving player and cheering his exit. Great. Have a bad game and latics fans hate you… No wonder people don’t want to sign and no wonder players want to leave.

Very busy today and was intending to make a brief visit to comment on one topic. I have read just two posts; Garswood’s and JamesC’s.
I spent the whole of the time in the period between the team being announced and kick-off bemoaning the fact that Scharner had been picked.
I spent the whole of the time between kick-off and his substitution praying he would be taken off.
I spent the rest of the game slagging off our support for a disgraceful and childish show of disrespect to one of our longest serving players – however poor we (I) may think he has been over the last few months, that was a shocking display.
We are comfortably the worst set of fans in the country. Apart from a valiant effort from the kids in the north-east corner, it was the usual moaning and groaning and know-nowt comments. Almost not surprising that our pampered prima donna players couldn’t be bothered putting in any effort.
Garswood – I’ms surprised at you, but you are entitled to your view of course.
JamesC – ring the date in the diary. I agree with you 100% :)
Cheers Griff I’ll have to remember this day!…At least someone is talking some sense. I didn’t by any means say he had a good game…But what good does cheering him off do?
16 April 2010 at 1:02 am #29737Scharner followed up an uninterested, inept performance at Fulham with another one last night. He was absolutely dreadful last night and showed no desire to work for the team at all. He should have been left out of the side after last week and I’ll be astonished if he’s in the 11 for Sunday.
Incidentally, I wonder if he spat the dummy out after the game, as I saw him leave the ground before 10 pm last night.
16 April 2010 at 3:12 am #29748”a disgraceful and childish show of disrespect to one of our longest serving players”
I lost count of the number of times I saw Scharner cock something up or give away possession & just stand there whilst waiting for someone else (further away) to try & win back possession.
That lack of effort & commitment is what I find to be disrespectful & disagraceful. How else do you expect people to show their displeasure with his performance other than what they did
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been saying for yonks he’s a waste of space.
Perhaps my annoyance at the crowd’s reaction was because it was the only time the majority of them had managed to rouse themselves into any type of enthusiasm all night.
Couldn’t agree more Griff, If you can’t support the lads – keep your gobs shut ! The Portsmouth few put us to shame last night, great support – take note !

Only thing Sharner is interested in now is his summer holidays and his adventure sports thing…………He wont put a solid tackle in for the rest of the season now………..
16 April 2010 at 1:25 pm #29756Only thing Sharner is interested in now is his summer holidays and his adventure sports thing…………He wont put a solid tackle in for the rest of the season now………..I’m not sure he’ll pull a shirt on for the rest of the season, never mind make a tackle. With Caldwell back, why should he?
I’d like to see Watson given a go somewhere. Maybe Watson, Diame and McCarthy in midfield (presuming we are retaining the same formation) with all three of them told that it is perfectly OK to go beyond the half-way line and support the attack, rather than play a 6-4 formation.
16 April 2010 at 2:57 pm #29766I think all this Scharner bashing (oo-er) is a tad disappointing. He’s been a good servant to the club and had some memorable games, even in mid-field. He’s had his time and maybe he’s just as frustrated as the rest of us in the way the club is heading – no pun intended – under Martinez.

16 April 2010 at 4:17 pm #29771Apparently Scharner went straight home after being subbed on Weds. If so cant see Bobby picking him again this season

My comment at the beginning of this thread.
I was making no judgements – just posing a question.
