Agreed. The bloke had some off days, but far more better ones. He is also clearly as mad as a box of frogs and all the more entertaining for it.

Just a pity he’s now playing well in a different team that’s getting the results.

Scharner wanted to leave every transfer window. Sulked when we dared not play him where he wanted to and he is now a legend.

            Boooooooooo from me

            Agree with that.

            Apart from the booing

I think anybody who even thinks of booing him should have a long hard look at themselves.

Don’t forget that day at Bramhall Lane, when it was he who scored our first goal.

And don’t forget his debut, when he scored in that semi-final first leg V Arsenal.

There were other goals as well. Regarding all the ‘want away’ moments, does anybody actually know for definite that he wanted away? And even if he did, what’s wrong with ambition? You can rest assured that Paul Scharner did not grow up with a dream to play for Latics.

As a player (at centre half anyway) I really rated him. As the person that came he came across as I thought he was a prat & I didn’t like the way he seemed to treat our managers & at times the club

Yes he scored some important & memorable goals but at the end of the day he was paid to play football & that is part & parcel of that so I wouldn;t worship him for 2 important goals he scored – just as I wouldn’t slate him for cock ups he made that cost us goals

But I can understand those who would want to give him stick. From my memory he told Hutchings to “f off” on the pitch whilst receiving an instruction from him & then publicly slated him when he left.
He moaned publicly at numerous intervals during Bruce’s reign coz he wasn’t playing him where he wanted to play & I even stated that Bruce “resented” him
He started to moan very early in Bobby’s reign that he “should be playing in midfield” & continued to moan quite publicly & regularly throughout the season. I can’t remember the specific incident but there was a thread on here about it where I said Bobby had shown himself as weak because he hadn’t publicly made him apologise & said it showed passion – but Bobby comes across as being able to take flack from players even publicly if he feels having them in the team makes it better than not having them in but even he lost patience with him in the latter half of last season & has publicly stated that his whole attutude & focus was wrong in that period & it was better for the club if he left so I’d take that as red that a) he wanted to leave & b) he was a disruptive influence on the dressing room

Even when he left he had a dig at the club

Paul Scharner is a legend in his own lunchtime & whereas part of me would love to slate him all game on Saturday I know that would only inflate his ego even further & would think it far better if everybody just ignored him
I look forward to watchign his headless chicken routine in the midfield on Saturday

For me, when his head was on straight, he was a fantastic centre-back. I remember the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge … he was magnificent that night …

I can never understand why he wanted to play in midfield, apart from his own ego. I think if he’d concentrated 100% on being a centre-half I think he would of ended up at a bigger club.

I hate all this bitterness in football.

It’s all a load of old bolls at the end of the day. Whatever happens, happens.

Remember, all we fans are is the peasants at the jousting.

I think we forget that sometimes.

I will gladly welcome Paul Scharner back, and appreciate his efforts in his time at the club. (was it 4 and half seasons?) For the £3.5 million or so we paid, we surely had our money’s worth. Up to him leaving, he was the longest serving player, apart from Mike Pollitt.
He gave us many great moments, and many great positives as he provided the solutions on many occasions. For this, we should be grateful, not bitter.

I am supremely indifferent to it, to be honest.

Players come and go all the time.

Exactly. None of our players grew up dreaming of playing for us, that we can be sure of. They are here to play and hope that one day they get a move to a bigger club.

                      That’s the reality.

Ok, it’s a matter of debate whether Scharner got that ‘big’ move (let’s not go there again, eh?) But he had run his course with us, definitely.

To be honest I agree with your sentiment of not booing him

My reply was more aimed at those who say they’ll praise him

Personally I dislike him coz of the attitude he portrayed & how it appeared he treated numerous managers & the club as a whole at time
No bitterness from me coz I’m glad he’s gone to be honest
