Rumoured to be joining us.
Ali wont start the season due to hip injury.
Ali, Carson & Nicholls is not a bad trio of keepers IMO although I hope we can see Nicholls get a chance this season.
25 June 2013 at 1:40 pm #116857I’m surprised the Turks are willing to let Carson go, as it seems his form has been good. It would be a good move for us. Nicholls did well for Northampton and they loved him, but if he’s going to play for us this season, i think it should be in cup games and low risk games, against poorer performing Championship teams.

25 June 2013 at 4:35 pm #116859That’s a lot of money for a reserve keeper. Perhaps he would be first choice, although Coyle professes himself to be a fan of Al Habsi.
It would be odd to have two experienced goalkeepers on the books – one is bound to be unhappy.
It’s usual to have a younger or older understudy. This arrangement would give little opportunity for Nicholls to progress.
25 June 2013 at 5:35 pm #116860It doesn’t look like Ali will be fit after shoulder surgery

£400.000 quoted in two newspapers today
25 June 2013 at 10:55 pm #116871He’s not very good.Too many mistakes for me.
Another Ali in waiting.

And if Ali is only second choice at £4m… :woohoo:
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!25 June 2013 at 11:18 pm #116873He’s not very good.Too many mistakes for me.Another Ali in waiting.
Name a goalie who doesn’t make mistakes?
The young Spanish lad at united looked at one point like the worst flapper in the history of goalies even with that defence in front of him. Roubles did superb for us but still got away with more than his fair share of poor “punch outs”. :woohoo:
Carson thought good enough to be signed by Liverpool and picked for England. In goalie terms he is still learning at 27. Great signing if that comes off at that price. :cheer:

What a journey!26 June 2013 at 3:44 am #116887And got shut of by Liverpool and West Brom. :(
Wasn’t he also the goalie who made the howler against Croatia when England failed to qualify for the Euro’s.
Yes they all make mistakes – but he makes too many.
26 June 2013 at 10:46 am #116889Keep Ali, keep Lee Nicholls (who I think should be given his head this season) and that is a good enough keeper line-up for the Championship.
We have much better areas in the team to be spending £400k in my view, unless the club knows something we don’t about Ali and/or Nicholls.

I thought Ali was injured?
But I agree that Nicholls proved last season that he is up this league…
FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that
26 June 2013 at 12:57 pm #116891But I agree that Nicholls proved last season that he is up this league…Did he??? When? I thought he was on loan at Northampton Town
I’m not saying that he isn’t good enough or that he shouldn’t be given more of a chance but playing well in the 4th division does not prove you are in any way shape of form good enough for the 2nd division – Lee Butler (after a shaky start) looked a good keeper in the bottom division but I’d never have said he was good enough for the level Latics are at now26 June 2013 at 1:25 pm #116892But I agree that Nicholls proved last season that he is up this league…

I personally didnt see him play at all last season however the Northampton fans think he will play for England one day.
Its a glowing reference from people in the know who have no reason to lie as he is not an asset of their own club.
He put in a man of the match performance for them at wembley producing a string of saves and saving a penalty all at the tender age of 20!!!
We need to give our best youngsters chances or how are we to expect them to develop into top players…

No you’re not, but you’re alluding to that – unless you are being particularly pernickety just for the sake of it!Aidy Boothroyd who managed Ben Foster at Watford said of him: “I genuinely think Lee is as good as Ben Foster. He was outstanding,”
To back this up, I speak to a Northampton fan through work, and he claims Nicholls is the best keeper he’s ever seen at that level and we’ll be lucky to keep hold of him.
At the very least, he’s well worth having at a back-up keeper in the Championship in my opinion.
