Just incase anyone is struggling to understand the meaning of the word pernickety…
pernickety [pəˈnɪkɪtɪ] US, persnickety
adj Informal
1. excessively precise and attentive to detail; fussy
2. (of a task) requiring close attention; exacting26 June 2013 at 8:54 pm #116927Just incase anyone is struggling to understand the meaning of the word pernickety…pernickety [pəˈnɪkɪtɪ] US, persnickety
adj Informal
1. excessively precise and attentive to detail; fussy
2. (of a task) requiring close attention; exactingAnd it still doesn’t apply. There’s a million miles between proving something & thinking something is the case – I don’t think there’s any such thing as God or Gods based on what I’ve experienced. It doesn’t mean I can prove that there is no God or Gods
I fail to see by any dictionary definition how me saying Lee Nicholls hasn’t proved he is good enough is pernicketyAnd do Americans really say persnickety??
26 June 2013 at 9:00 pm #116928I dont think for a second JayT was saying that Lee Nicholls should be awarded with a certificate of authenticity announcing him as a fully qualified Championship keeper because of his time at Northampton.
He was probably pointing out like everyone else he had a great season and deserves his chance.
I think you were being excessively precise and attentive to detail (some call it fussy) and were requiring too close of attention to the wording of a point that we all agree on anyway!!!!!!
Hence you were being Pernickety.
Not that I expect for a second that you will admit it :P
26 June 2013 at 9:35 pm #116929So it wouldn’t matter if you (or I) had seem him play coz what do you know but you form am opinion based on the views of Northampton Town fans & some local & tabloid journalists coz they know so much more???They watch him every week, so yes, I’d value their opinions more than either of us watching sporadic games.
Neil Sullivan & Maik Taylor get games (I assume) because they have proved they are still capable of playing at that level by doing it week in, week out at that level. Lee Nicholls has notI know Nicholls hasn’t proven himself in the Championship; that the whole fecking point of this exchange of posts! Sullivan in particular, is way past his best as a goalkeeper. He’s older than Pollitt. Older than me even (just). So who would you rather have in your goals a 43 year old or a young up and coming 20 year old? I know which I’d choose.
Have to correct you on a factual error though – I’ve only seen 1 Latics reserve game in my life …. I didn’t write off anyone after that game other than to say virtually all of em played very poorly … I think I said about Nicholls that he’d been awful which he was but that he wasn’t the only one. ANYWAY I never wrote off NcManaman after the game coz he didn’t play as I think he was on loan at Blackpool at the time – I do actually like to at least see someone play once before writing them off!!!Fair enough if you didn’t mention McManaman – my mistake. You did use it to write off Wigan’s development programme however, as that was whole theme of the thread as I (and Garswood if I remember rightly) argued to the contrary that we’d seen things compeltely differently in the Development Squad games we’d watched.
Back to Nicholls I’m not saying I disagree with anyone that says they think he should be given a go. If Al Habsi is gonna miss the start of the season if I was Coyle I would go with Pollitt & Nicholls & be happy with it. I just (initially) said there Is no way that his performances at northampton have “proved” he is good enough for the championshipAnd back to that word ‘proven’. No he’s not proven – but I’d say if you asked a good number of people they’d share the opinion that he’s could be a good keeper in the Championship.
Anyway, over and out. I’m even boring myself now.

That’s coz I wasn’t being!!

I don’t know how to split up a quote that way so I’ll have to do it this way:
1) Doesn’t matter how many times they’ve watched him, they’re not (in your words) scouts or football managers so what do they know?
2) If Sullivan & Taylor are good enough then they’re young enough. They are still playing at this level coz they have proved they’re good enough. regardless of whether they’re past their best or not. Personally I would choose whoever was the better keeper be they 43 or 20
3) I don’t recall writing off the development programme more a case of that if anyone was hoping for one of em to come in & rescure the season they’d be in for a long wait coz they’d been dire & a relatively experienced team had been completely mullered by a Liverpool team of 17 yr olds & Jonjo Shelvey (plus some bloke they bought off rangers & have just sold back to a Scottish club). As it happens none of them did!!
4) So basically my original post was right – he isn’t proven. Thanks. You could have saved us all a lot of time & effort in typing if you’d just said that in teh first place26 June 2013 at 10:12 pm #116933So IMO Nicholls hasn’t proved he is good enough at this level although I hope to find out this season whether he isExactly my point. Give him a chance and don’t waste £400k on a third keeper. Always assuming that Ali is staying too, as I said earlier
26 June 2013 at 10:19 pm #116934Lots of questions, I know, but how long will Al Habsi be out for? Has Coyle seen Nicholls play?
We do want to get off to a good start, but do we really need to buy a replacement?
Couldn’t we get an experienced keeper on loan for the period – Robinson, for example, or Rob Green or perhaps Reina or Brad Jones?
And yes, I do know, they have all made mistakes!
26 June 2013 at 11:26 pm #116937Let me just shout this out so you can hear it OK..
“ALI WILL BE OUT FOR THE START OF THE CAMPAIGN, HENCE THE REASON OC IS GOING IN FOR CARSON”.
OK young Nicholls may be worth a punt with Pollitt on the bench, but do we really think Carson is that bad he’s not worth buying for £400k, which in football terms is not two weeks wages for Wayne Rooney.
We’ve apparently bid a million squid for a right back from Derby, anybody heard of him?. Iv’e Googled him, but up to that knew diddly squat about the player.Get the fekker Carson bought and see who looks the best keeper in the pre season friendlies and take it from there. It’s better to be over subscribed in the goalie department, than having to throw Nicholls in after the possibility he may look pish poor in pre-season friendlies.
Lets move on to the next topic this thread is getting more boring than war and peace or A.R.S….no I wont go there.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!26 June 2013 at 11:36 pm #116938Tyldesley has proven himself to be pernickety at this level, whilst Salford is premier league pernickety, what is it with these out of towners, argumentative sods what do you think it is, a forum?
27 June 2013 at 1:03 am #116942Don’t be surprised if Nicholls has another season on loan at Northampton ! He is young and still developing as a keeper and so in my opinion another season in the lower leagues will do him the World of good !
27 June 2013 at 1:05 am #116943Anyway, over and out. I’m even boring myself now. You’re on a loser there Johnny! I’ve tried it before and it’s like arguing with the wife, if I remember that far back. ;)
