Jewell, Hutchings, Bruce & Martinez. There was not too much recruitment involved in these and yes, Hutchings was a failure.
Coyle & Rosler were managers we went out to get.Either we have somebody with a connection to Whelan or the club lined up or the decision makers will need to have learnt the lessons when trying to recruit from the market.
Really? Didn’t we have to pay Swansea compensation?
You rarely sack a manager without having someone, or a few, sounded out.
The recruitment of the manager was easy. Martinez was Whelan’s No1 choice and he quickly knew that Martinez wanted to come. As Martinez said at the time “Wigan was the only club he would leave Swansea for”
The compensation was for the two clubs to negotiate, but the end result was inevitable once Martinez told Swansea he wanted to leave.
“Wigan was the only club he would leave Swansea for” was a nice sound bite from Martinez and questionable if he really meant it but what was the difference between the recruitment of say Bruce (second time around) and Rosler for example?
You are focusing on the process between clubs, but I’m takling about selection of the person.
Bruce had already been here once and both parties already knew each other.
Again, we had to pay Birmingham for him, but they were a club just about to be takenover by Carsten Yeung. It was easy recruitment because both parties knew eachother and Bruce he had an uncertain future at his current club. Probably a marriage of convenience like it was first time.I may be wrong but here is my personal opinion on the Coyle and Rosler appointments.
Coyle – The club had people interested because we had just won the FA Cup and had 8 years in the Prem. Coyle probably interviewed very well and said the right things. That’s just an opinion based on how I’ve seen him in the media. But my point is that the previous managers I quoted had a connection with Whelan or the club. The club wasn’t experienced at recruiting somebody at Championship level or above from the “market”, so made a bad judgement with Coyle. After the Coyle experience, Latics management probably gathered more external references about Rosler, as any company recruiting externally for a senior leadership position should do.
Coyle was a bad fit and Rosler seemed like a better fit, but may not have been the best leader of people (but it is hard to say from the outside)
It wouldn’t surprise me if Whelan, Jackson etc recruit somebody they already know this time, because the risk of the person not fitting into the club culture could result in another relegation.
Let’s see
14 November 2014 at 4:39 pm #135503Malky mackay for me at cardiff they won the championship at a canter if he had stayed manger at Cardiff they would not have gone down
Oh! I would have no objection to his appointment, and if it meant that only true supporters came to the DW then so be it.
Neither would I. My previous comments on this subject have been that it is my belief that the view within football is that he will struggle to get another job because clubs will be wary of any media backlash if they appoint him. Not saying that’s right, and certainly not aaying that would bother Whelan if he wanted to approach him.
As a mate of muine said, why wouldn’t Whelan be interested in a bogoted, sexist, racist homophobic 1970s throwback? It’s a match made in heaven!! ;)

We need someone with three attributes for me:
Strong personality within the dressing room to prevent the so-called player power that we have
Interested in youth – As GL has said that is how we survive and make our money.
Thrifty with cash – DW won’t be throwing millions at him so he has to make sure he spends it wisely and correctly.
Knowing how much DW loves a bit of media attention, how about hiring a female for the first time in English football
14 November 2014 at 8:56 pm #135514I don’t want Mackay anywhere near my club
15 November 2014 at 12:24 am #135519i think whelan needs to act fast and appoint someone berore next saturday. Boro sold out their allocation, 4,800, whoever it might be we all need to get down there next week and get behind the team, bring ya mates, bring ya family ,bring ya dog (not a sexist remark btw ) lets have a good turn out and make a din.
15 November 2014 at 3:33 pm #135533Mackay has alledgedly already been sounded out so i’ll go with him.Why would you even believe that? Even if it were true, there is no-one who would have been involved in such a sounding out who would even think of making it public.
Anyway, Micky Quinn, talking of Talksport yesterday morning, says he has it on good authority that Mackay is being lined up to take over at Norwich. If I was to believe anybody it would be someone like him, especially as he seemed sufficiently confident to say it live on national radio.

And indeed if that is true, I wonder how the Norwich fans will react to his appointment. Nothing like the over-the-top, PC drama queens I have seen around the boards, I would hope.
Anyway, if he isn’t coming here then good luck to the fella, whatever he does.

I wonder if any of our number are amongst those who have written to our local MP demanding she intervene to stop Whelan appointing Mackay and saying that they will stop attending games if he is given the job. Sounds like as good a reason as any to appoint him to me, if it means we get rid of a few gobshites at the same time.
15 November 2014 at 9:36 pm #135554I thought political interference in football was very much frowned upon.
Like this –
15 November 2014 at 11:58 pm #135561So will she be handing in her notice due to the big pedophile ring that is allegedly operating within Westminster! Not forgetting the latest murder probe!
16 November 2014 at 12:28 am #135562It would be an interesting development if all future managerial applicants had to reveal the contents of their texts & emails during the interview process.
Indeed how many of the holier than thou PC brigade amongst our fan base would also be happy to reveal their own private banter amongst mates.
Stupid macho banter should not end a career and I’m sure Mackay will be employed again – alas I think Whelan will now steer well clear.
16 November 2014 at 12:38 am #135563So will she be handing in her notice due to the big pedophile ring that is allegedly operating within Westminster! Not forgetting the latest murder probe!Exactly. A PM or Politician of any sort for that matter taking the high road over a few sexist texts would be like me criticising someone for supporting both Latics and Wigan rugby.
