Has the original poster got any idea how much the Liebherr’ family are worth in comparison to Dave Whelan & thus how much they can put into Southampton or how much they can put up as security so banks will allow overdrafts/loans etc??
Their wealth makes Dave Whelan look like he’s on the dole.

You should/could have ended that sentence after the bold bit. For a clever lad, Yosser has always been a bit of a prick when it comes to Whelan. Him and Bickymon must have been sacked from the same sweeping up jobs in the JJB warehouse.[/quote]

Well i logged on to read the comments after yesterdays match but there weren’t any so i thought i would force a post. The old ‘Whelan’ bashing always get’s a good bite ;)

One of the best stories since the league started in 1992 and an example to nothing tread water clubs like Aston Vile and Blunderland ( last trophy 1973 – tossers!!!) who just try to scrape to 40 points.
I hope with all my heart one of these two pay the price for this with relegation this year but fair play to Southampton and they are a fantastic example to any mid range club with a bit of ambition that it can still be done. That said how long is it before one of the stinking rich clubs comes after Kouman and his, players again but if they get in the champions league it will give them a chance to keep them.
      nothing but respect for them

They really are a fabulous team. I love watching them play. They go forward with so much energy. I had them down for relegation certainties after selling all their players in the summer.

Listen, as much as i dislike Whelan, And i won’t lie about that fact. I will say one thing. Wigan Athletic were the first REAL unfashionable club to make it to the premiership and break the stigma of one season wonders. The base model for many other clubs afterwards. There has been an influx of promoted unfashionable clubs afterwards.

However, when the whole warchest thing and selling all the assets every season became apparent bollocks, i started to lose interest. I scrapped my season ticket when Bruce left and the ‘stars’ were sold. We had an opportunity to kick on but Whelan didn’t want that. The revenue thing would have been worth a lot more with higher premiership finishes and there was every chance of that happening without any financial worry.

whelan fucked up and got us in position we are now sell the cream and bought sour milk to replace
runs the club like he used to run his market stall buy and sell for a profit and some folk are too blind to see it
but you need to know the guy to understand him his sister who also worked in market never had a good word for him says alot really
yes i worked for whelan but never got the sack but i used to chat to him on the shop floor about the latics
but nothing left to sell now of any worth and he wont burden the club on his family even if he still says so
he will find a buyer but only when parachute money has all gone
those who trust whelan are either blind or stupid even a complete fool

An unfashionable club flying high in the Premiership because when they sold their star players they replaced them with star players. Not £100,000 Scottish div standard.

Take note Whelan. Wigan Athletic used to have a side like that, Valencia, Palacios, Baines, N’Zogbia etc and he sold the lot to line his own pockets. He never wanted success, Just Sky’s tv money. Winning the F.A Cup was just an extraordinary fluke that gave the facade that he was interested about Wigan Athletic.

Right yosser, I know most of the stuff you spout is just out of devilment but your anti- owner campaign is baffling. You compare us to Southampton a club who has a Div 4 club 20 odd mile to the east and 2 more lower league clubs an internal flight away to the west unlike us who have 4 of the biggest clubs in Britain a bus ride away and who Wigan folk have historically supported for ever. If you started a new club up tomorrow with billions to spend you could not find a tougher place geographically to put it than Wigan. Despite all the hurdles this club has faced it has jumped every one and kept going. All the Olligarchs and Sheiks who throw obscene amounts of cash at their respective clubs have not transformed them as much as Mr Whelan has here at Wigan. Despite having a fraction of the wealth of these guys uncle Dave has masterminded a rise unmatched anywhere in European football and unlike the aforementioned billionaires, Mr Whelan has done it himself. He hasn’t just hired the most expensive and biggest names in football to oversee the plans he has been hands on and lead from the front. Another thing that sets him apart from the other owners is that he knows the trials and tribulations of running a club having himself played at the highest level.

You are entitled to your opinion yosser and your beliefs and on here you will always get debate. I too am entitled to my opinion and that is that if you take everything into consideration like the size of the club the finances available and where we lie geographically then take the success that Mr Whelan has engineered. I reckon we have the best chairman in world football and would put up his achievements against anybody’s.

I can understand people being frustrated with the way DW has run the club over the years, but he has tried to run it like a business, which in essence it is, and still managed to achieve a fantastic trip for us all.

The last 20 years or so have been something that no Wigan Athletic fan could honestly have envisaged happening and this has been done without ruining the club. Look at Portsmouth and Leeds, would you swap? May be you would rather have stayed with the Hartlepool’s and Rochdale’s for the last 20 years, because without him that would have been the best we could have hoped for.

We may ultimately end up back in League One or two, but no one will ever be able to take away the memories of the last twenty odd years.

Is Katharina Liebherr anything to do with that family by any chance, oh I forgot yes she is, I wonder is that the same woman who has ousted the man behind Southampton’s recent success and told them that no more family money will be used to bankroll them.

Strange that, his sister, who runs the book stall on the market lives 50 or so yards from me and Whelan is regularly at her house, her Husband, Whelans brother in law was his partner in the original Market stall and chose not to take the risk in purchasing the first supermarket with Whelan, I know this because my late father in law was his Friday night drinking buddy in the Travellers Rest at Pemberton.

You would think that someone who “never had a good word for him” would not welcome him into her home !!

Also ironic that Southampton’s former head of recruitment was our very own Paul Mitchell (yes that Paul Mitchell) how we could do with someone like that now as he’s made some brilliant signings unlike Rosler who’s basically ruined the club with his mega duds.

If I’m not mistaken were we not nearly 70m in debt not too many years ago? That is when the tight old git decided to run the club like a business, can’t say I blame him. Wigan do not generate anywhere near enough revenue to continually bring in decent players. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t burden my family with a football club either..

Anyone wanting to know why/how Southampton are able to spend far more than Latics did during our time in the top flight just needs to take a look at the most recent Deloitte football rich list – they’re 25th with an income of £125mill in the last financial year.
I’d hazard a guess that even with the current top flight TV income that Latics wouldn’t even come remotely close to that figure
For comparison crystal palace, hull, Cardiff, Norwich, west brom & Fulham didn’t get near to that figure either and all of them have far bigger match day income in the top flight than Latics did/do

Rubbish. Don’t be coming on here with your facts and reliable sources to try and take the attention away from Whelan. He has ruined this club. Our income is greater than Man Utd, our crowds are 25000 every week and that broken legged bastard lies about it to pocket the profits.

              Whelan out.

Bit of a daft thread really, can’t see how it’s still going.

The only thing you can have a go at Whelan for is some of his managerial appointments. Past that who can say they’d have rather supported any other team during his tenure?
