Lowe scored loads of goals for Pompey coming in from the right.
25 February 2020 at 12:41 pm #185301He’s been signed as a wide forward because that’s where he plays. We don’t play “out and out wingers” so why would we sign someone as one? Where he played for Pompey is irrelevant in the same way if someone signs Naismith it probably isn’t as a left back
25 February 2020 at 6:53 pm #185302Hey mutty, with Sunderland’s run how do you rate their chances of going up now?Better than they were in December when the tactic was to give the ball to McGeady and hope he’ll create something, only for him to lose the ball 90% of the time and not bother his arse tracking back. I’ll have a much better idea come Sunday afternoon, once Coventry have played Rotherham & Sunderland.
With Jamal Lowe I can’t understand why Paul Cook went to so much trouble to sign him and then play him out of position. Surely Cook knew his strengths and weaknesses already having managed him at Portsmouth. I think with Lowe there is talent and goals in there somewhere given some confidence and a more consistent game plan.Totally agree. Why would anyone sign a player and expect them to not only bridge the gap in standard but do so playing out of position!
25 February 2020 at 10:59 pm #185303If you use wing backs then the likes of Lowe (natural winger) doesn’t get anywhere near the side. It unbalances the shape. I hate wing backs at our level with a passion. It’s not rocket science if Lowe plays give him his natural position and adopt a flat back 4.I’m not sure what you mean by wing backs Nuneaton? I call them that in a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation. Like when we played Preston. In our formation I just think they are full backs in a flat back four which get forward to help the attack. Pretty much the standard for any full back on the modern game.
We lined up against Nob End with a 5-3-2 but with the so called wing backs making the odd pathetic run up the flanks. Off the 2 only one was a striker and the three were three defensive midfielders. A pathetic effort and demonstration of negative football that worked at Leeds but back fired against Nob End.
25 February 2020 at 11:01 pm #185304According to Portsmouths website they played 4231 last season with Lowe as part of the three. We play…..4231 with Lowe as part of the three.
I blame Cook.

4231 implies that one of the three plays behind/off the lone striker and the other two play wide of the lone striker.
So why are we not playing the players in their rightful positions? ie Naismith/Gelhardt to the left of the striker, Lowe/Pilkington on the right of the striker, and the most obvious one Garner behind/off the striker. The players are there, but Cook chooses to fuck about time after time with players out of position or worse still, out of form (Massey & Jacobs).
I am sure he will only be happy when he takes us back down to his level and his comfort zone of League One.
I also blame Cook.
26 February 2020 at 12:00 am #185307On Saturday our front four was Lowe, Pilks, Jacobs and Moore. Regardless of whether you or I agree with the four or not they were the 4 in a 4231.
It almost seems like we give them free reign to roam around at times rather than stick to the left, middle or right because we don’t play “out and out wingers” but then again….not many sides do. The likes of Gary Teale and David Lee are long gone.
26 February 2020 at 12:33 am #185308The likes of Gary Teale and David Lee are long gone.More’s the pity, as this wing back malarky is dull, boring and non productive.
The sooner proper out and out wingers return, the better.26 February 2020 at 12:55 am #185310The likes of Gary Teale and David Lee are long gone.

Come on SSB, you can’t say it isn’t worth a try.
The rubbish we have seen for the last two seasons certainley hasn’t worked, so why not try something different.26 February 2020 at 1:53 am #185313The likes of Gary Teale and David Lee are long gone.

Did we get into the Premier League in the 70’s. It got us automatic promotion then and was far better to watch than anything we have witnessed since. As Horc suggested it could be worth a try or at least an experiment for a year or two. Things couldn’t be any worse and if it did go worse after a year or two we could revert back to Cook/Joyces style of turgid tripe.26 February 2020 at 2:06 am #185316It’s nearly 20 years ago. Let it go. The Paul Jewell days wont work anymore hence why hes failed miserably sinve he left here.

Let it go, and return to proper attacking football.
26 February 2020 at 3:30 am #185323Have a word with Josephs goal, maybe they can get the Jewell team back together for ya

The Paul Jewell days wont work anymore hence why hes failed miserably sinve he left here.Says who, quite a few teams have reverted back to 442 recently and gone with 2 up top. It’s you who should let it go. We are no longer in the prem signing quality players like Palacios Valencia etc. We have div 1 players who are not good enough or fit enough to copy the way the big boys play. This idiot could start Keifer in goal and you would find a reason to defend it.
