The question isn’t whether he got the ball, it’s whether it was dangerous.
I’d have to say it was dangerous – even if no harm was intended.
I should think that most Wigan fans would be upset if one our players was tackled like that.
However, the referee did see the tackle, although he did not recognise it as a foul. That’s quite different in my view to an off-the-ball incident that the referee does not see at all.

Halsey has apologised to Newcastle and said he didn’t see the tackle. The free kick he gave was for handball a couple of seconds later.
The linesman had a perfect view though as MOTD2 showed but chose not to say anything for some reason.
Yes he did get the ball, but his studs were showing and it was knee height. A youthful rush of blood perhaps?
If they do retrospectively ban him, it will just confirm the corruption in this league…why ban for a momentary rush of blood by a young player, causing a mistimed challenge, when they didn’t ban Rooney for a premeditated off the ball punch to McCarthy a couple of seasons back?

That’s a fair point, but two wrongs don’t make a right, I’m afraid. I don’t think there was any real intent in McManaman’s challenge but it was dictionary-definition reckless.
As someone else has said, just imagine the furore if that had happened to one of our players?
Two wrongs don’t make a right…but I suspect Callum will be banned and I still think it stinks that Rooney wasn’t, and I always will.
There would have been a huge furore had it happened to one of our players, but the day after the game it would have been yesterdays chip paper and we would have been expected to move and get on with it.
But what’s the lad supposed to do? Wait for the ball to drop, not challenge and potentially get beat by his man? What if he’d stood off and it had led to a goal?
There was nothing wrong in McManaman going for the original challenge as it was a 50/50 ball which was there to be won & in fact he was always favourite to get to it
There was also nothing in the actual original challenge coz he wins the ball & he knows that if he doesn’t get to & away from the ball quickly then the newcastle player is gonna clatter him. & he also knows that if he doesn’t go into it fully committed then he is the one who is likely to get hurt.
That said, how the challenge ends up is horrendous – studs up, just under his knee, both feet off the floor, trailing foot following through & could have really done some leg breaking, bone popping through the skin damage.
I think it’s pretty obvious that there’s no intent from McManaman but there doesn’t need to be.
Whether the FA can take retrospective action against McManaman I don’t know. They can only do so if the referee says he didn’t see it – now he clearly didn’t see it properly or else he’d have sent him off but whether it has to be completely not seeing it i.e. somet off the ball behind his back, I don’t know. I suspect we’ll find out later this morning
PS – Griff. A reckless challenge is only a yellow card offence!! ;)

What, like Miyaichi at Goodison 9 days ago?
If they are going to start ‘retrospectively’ acting and banning players after the event, I am sure we can supply a fair sized list of our own to be acted on, can’t we?
Incidentally, I was sat right in line with McManaman’s challenge, about 20 yards away, and thought it looked a very firm, but fair, challenge. To my memory, he came away with the ball and no Newcastle players went over the top in their claims to the ref. Surely if it had been that bad one of them at least would’ve either A flown into Callum themself, or B at least gone and had a push and a shove at him once play had stopped. I really thought their lad would end up limping off and then be on again a minute later, running like a gazelle.
I’ve heard the challenge compared to Roy Keane’s on Inge Haaland. Absolute bollocks. And it is all compounded by today’s Mirror which features condemnation of Callum McManaman to the hilt.
The fact that the match write up in the Mirror is conducted by ALAN NIXON, A GEORDIE, and fan of NUFC, and the fact that the still of the ‘horror challenge’ is used not once, but TWICE in that publication, says everything.
In no way should our club allow Alan Nixon anywhere near the inner sanctum of the media room after his quite blatant attempts to get our club and more so, our player, into serious trouble. Not once does he take into account McManaman’s youthful inexperience and exhuberance, and not once does he condemn John Carver, a 48 year old, for trying to have a pop at Callum, a 21 year old, which in itself is a disgrace.
Callum is nowhere near being in there, but three of the ten are by Newcastle players and one of the others is on Jordi Gomez.
Self-righteous nonsense coming out of Newcastle at the moment. The mixture of Pardew and their supporters (who ran riot over local match yesterday near the Soccerdome stealing equipment and swinging on the crossbars in an attempt to break them), is sickening.
Does anyone remember the match at Spurs last season. Assou-Ekotto (sp?) went right over the top on one of our players ( can’t remember who ) , you actually saw the leg bend. Afterwards no fuss whatsoever.
If the FA can look at tackles retrospectively why haven’t they looked at some of the snidey ankle breakers that Suarez has been dishing out this season. I can think of at least two occasions where he’s nearly caused serious damage, and unlike Callum’s challenge his are totally calculated.
That challenge by Mirallas on Miyaichi last Saturday seems to have fallen under the media radar which I believe was also deserving of a red card, in fact in some respects more so than yesterday since there was intent there bourne out of frustration at being 3-0 down to Wigan.
The fact that we won and the focus was on poor old Everton going out of the cup seems to have made everyone overlook what a bad tackle that was, hitting him shin high, out on the touchline with the ball going out of play and causing ankle ligament damage that ended his season.
A lot of great posts there…I really believe that one of the things which keeps helping us to scrape across the line and stay in this league every season is the constant injustices, gutter press swipes, and media garbage that we have to endure week in and week out.
The club, the players and the fans put up with it all and it galvanises us together to use against them.
Little Wigan upsetting the apple cart since 2005!!
