That’s a shit hot way off looking at things.

In Malky we trust even though he hasn’t tried anything different apart from none up front.

I’d rather be proved wrong than never know

Don’t get me wrong, without Dave we’d have never had the last 20 years – he has been a godsend for our club in many ways.

The only sensible part of the post.

Imagine if he had backed Bruce in 2008 and not sold off our best assets? Imagine if he’d not allowed clubs to court Bob. Imagine if he’d not let McLaren slip through his fingers for the sake of a few quid. Imagine if he’d thought a bit more about the implications on the club of taking on Malky for the sake of another cheap deal.

if, if, if – Grandson was telling me something about – if, bollocks and grandma t’other day. What on earth did he mean by that eh?

We are in a very bad place and Malky isn’t going to save us. Right now we need to be led and managed by folk who understand the club, it fans and the town. You can see it in his eyes – Malky doesn’t care about us. He’s only here cos nobody else’ll have him…and why should the players care about him when even he might be gone soon too?

I’m sorry but I really do not buy into that at all. I do agree that as a team we are not quite firing on all cylinders, however, I still come back to the observations made in earlier posts (some of which I have said myself). The players need to step up to the mark, they need to stop sulking and get on with it – with all this head down, not arsed nonsense they will never attract the attention of other clubs (oh! are they really that stupid).

Finally, someone made the observation that, as well as the players, the other common denominator in play here is the backroom staff. I’m afraid that Mackay needs to have a conference call with DW and tell him that they have had their run and it’s time to bring his own, determined and hungry staff in to arrest this player/backroom staff big sulk. They are like a group of kids in the school yard who will not let anyone join in their game of Skilly.

I want to see Mackay active in this window for both players and coaches.

I keep hearing/reading ” He inherited these players ” etc and this is true, he did, from another incompetent stubborn manager who also had the full backing of those who say/write this? In fact, I think they said the same about the guy before him who they had also defended to the hilt albeit it not as much as the last two! These fans if you notice never offer any possible solutions or ideas of their own, they just tell you to accept what is happening and that the people in charge know what they are doing? All I know is that the formation/team selection is not working at the moment and if he continues to stick with it we are going down, end of! I actually believe that some fans hanker for lower league football and the so called ‘Good old days’ !

Tez I never said they were my choices, personally I would drop some of the under performers and promote the kids but that is why I get paid to drive and not to manage a football team. You don’t seriously think Malky tries not to win games do you?. His reputation is on the line here and he is doing his damndest to turn it round but he is picking the side he thinks is best. We are in transition and players who no longer want to be at the club will get their moves away. Like I said I would not pick them but if we have nobody else to come in then what is the guy supposed to do?.

Listen mate, if he’d tried all avenues of winning a football match I’d be with you, but he hasn’t.

There are so many other options it’s ridiculous but still it’s fortune or nobody.

To say there’s nobody else to come in is a cross between burying your head in the sand and having blind faith in the manager.

Well once Delort and Riera have been shipped out along with Holt’s injury if Fortune gets injured as well he will be forced into trying something different or somebody.

Well said, GalacTIC. That’s the best post I’ve seen on here in weeks.

We might not have appreciated it at the time, but Bruce’s whole operation was more professional than any we’ve seen since. It came at a price, of course: massive salaries, fitness coaches, and hanging on longer to our best assets. It was a price which Whelan refused to pay, in his guise of never standing on a player/manager’s way when they want to move on.

Since then we’ ve seen Whelan get found out, trying to maintain Premier League survival while still turning over two or three key players a season. No one should feel surprised or betrayed by this: it’s his stated business model. Unfortunately, it’s narrow-sighted. Now we’ll have to pay just to get out of our predicament; while his cheap appointment of a pariah manager doesn’t look so canny any more, either.

Steve Bruce may have a wonky face and moan about referees all the time, but I think he’s an honest man and a realist. After today’s match against Arsenal, he admitted that he didn’t have as many strong players at his disposal and that it will take a few more seasons in the Premier League before he does. Whelan’s policy of selling on players has meant that we’ve started with new squads almost every season. Bruce would have told him: that’s not building for the future, it’s flying by the seat of your pants.

Finally, Whelan sacked Graham Barrow as Laticss manager in about 1994. So what on earth is he still doing advising the likes of Malky Mackay, who have actually won things at this level? We need a clearout of players and back room staff alike, and could seriously do with some new impetus in the boardroom to stop Whelan and his yes men running Latics like a non-league club.

If Whelan had of backed Bruce to the hilt we’d be with Pompey and Leeds. Our wage bill was through the roof when he left and it took 12 month of clearing out to put it back on track.
As for – the rise and fall of Wigan Athletic’ ? Shit, good, shit ,,,,,the end…….

Whelan balanced the books masterfully. Without the sale of such players survival wouldn’t have been possible as there was no obvious increase in revenue (unless some believe Champions league football was on the horizon). Others seem to forget that the majority of those that left actually wanted to go. The likes of Valencia and Palacios would hardly have stayed on our salaries.

Is the same Steve Bruce who wanted to build for the future by shutting down our academy?

No obvious rise in revenue? We went down the season before the TV money went through the roof. As for players not wanting to stay, that may be true of Valencia and Palacios, but Bruce has shown he can get a certain class of player to sign and stay at Hull City, arguably a more unfashionable address than Wigan. While he was in charge,10th-place finishes and European contention were realistic aims; after Sir Bob took over, it was relegation dogfights all the way.

You mean apart from winning the FA Cup and beating Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool?

The end of Bruce’s second season was poor – relegation form in fact, so there’s no guarantee that he too would not have ended up in a fight against relegation as Jewell had done before him and as Martinez would subsequently

Granted he was a much bigger name that Martinez and had many more connections allowing him to attract the higher profile plyers, but the business model wasn’t working and he would have been on much tighter financial constraints the following season.

Steve Bruce is a good manager, but I personally preferred the football under Martinez and for me the highs far outweighed the lows.

You mean the boring tippy-tappy nonsense? You should read the bottom four Bob thread.

I don’t think the problems we have now go that far back to be honest.

Steve Bruce got us to 40 points just after Christmas and we hardly got another point after he famously said I can’t motivate them now they’re on their holidays lol

I don’t blame Whelan one bit for not financing us to the point of bankruptcy, I do hate some of his ‘against the grain’ managerial appointments however. Coyle should never have been let near this club, same as Dame Maurice but I didn’t think those appointments could ever be trumped by this complete and utter farce

Yep, £40k per week for Titus Bramble, anyone?

Martinez wasn’t allowed to spend anything like that kind of money.
