Breaking News on BBC
8 May 2018 at 5:42 pm #168953Who’s this bell end ?? “Simon the testicle stone”
BBC Sport’s Simon Stone
Interesting times ahead for Wigan.
A provincial club, driven to heights it could never have imagined by local businessman Dave Whelan, is now being transferred into the hands of owners from Hong Kong few fans will have a clue about.
The worry will be that many similar deals – Blackburn Rovers being a prime example – have gone disastrously wrong.
However, with average gates hovering around 10,000, the brutal truth is Wigan cannot hope to compete in the Championship, let alone get back to the top flight, without some kind of outside investment.
The big question surrounds the International Entertainment Corporation. Namely, what’s in it for them?

To be frank, quite a lot of truth in that and thats why Whelan is probably selling!
8 May 2018 at 6:08 pm #168955What a bellend.
What’s in it for them?
They have acquired an English football team at presumably a reasonable price that with reasonable investment could get back into the PL and all the riches that that brings, and the exposure to their brand name brings.
It’s surely not too difficult to figure, is it?

Agree. Bit shocked you used one of my degrading phrases towards them though. Lol. Not like you, George! You are right though.
The rest is pretty much true, apart from the 10,000 attendances. We will average 12-13k I reckon next season. Same as one of the league’s founding member clubs, PNE, who had 100 years start on us. We aren’t doing so bad, really.
Attendances are an easy bit of ammo for lazy journo’s. If success was based on support, Leeds and Nottingham Forest wouldve been back in the top flight now.
8 May 2018 at 8:19 pm #168964Sorry, but I’ll have to pretty much agree with everything that Simon Stone says:
1) Its true that ownership may soon be in the hands of a group of Hong Kong businessmen that few Latics supporters & most outside have a clue about
2) We are a provincial club driven to great heights by Whelan’s investment
3) There is a worry, expressed by many on here, other sites, facebook, twitter & at games that this could be one of those deals that goes horribly wrong
4) As with point 3 there are many asking what is in it for the potential buyers. We spent 8 years in the top flight & made a small profit in 1 (possibly 2) season & that was when the club was only spending what it was getting in. or trying to. Yes Whelan’s businesses got exposure but he lost far more than he put in & its likely to be the same for these possible new fellas
5) Every club in the Championship, other than whoever comes up in the play offs, will have a bigger budget than Latics next season unless a significant amount of money is pumped in – that in itself will make it difficult for us to compete at that level. Not impossible as the likes of PNE & Millwall have shown (although the latter could well be one season wonders – who knows??) but very difficult nonetheless
6) Likewise with 3 clubs coming down having over £50mill extra income, along with the funds that many others have means getting back into the top flight without outside investment is going to be almost impossible. It will (IMO) certainly need more than some “reasonable investmentSo, I don’t have a problem with anything he says & I think those that do are possibly being a little too sensitive
8 May 2018 at 9:02 pm #168969I think the owners will make money back home in china through selling club merchandise and sponsorship could be a big thing over their
And you never know we might get fans coming to watch the tics from china well we can only hope8 May 2018 at 9:53 pm #168974There is no reason at all why Latics can not survive in the championship.
Barnsley, Millwall,Burton spring to mind.
I cannot understand the negativity of some of our fans on this subject.
Wigan is a big enough town to be able to have at least a team capable of
being mid table in the Championship.Oh, and we are not the Tics we are the Latics.
8 May 2018 at 9:58 pm #168976Apparentely the owners want premier league football within 2 years.
8 May 2018 at 9:59 pm #168977Apparentely the owners want premier league football within 2 years. So do we.
Sounds like a perfect match.8 May 2018 at 10:05 pm #168978What an exciting time to have this deal go through and get some investment.
In world Cup year as well, so you never know if we might discover some unknown raw talent from one of the lesser nations who we can snap up. Another Valencia or Palacios, perhaps. Buy for 3 million, have a couple of decent seasons out of them, and then sell them for 20 million.
Like I said, exciting times.
8 May 2018 at 11:03 pm #168980Its not always all about the money. A good Manager with half decent players with a good team spirit goes along way.
There much larger clubs than us whose owners have thrown many millions more at their club than we have and have acheived far far less,
This Paul Cook era reminds me so much of when Paul Jewell was here, and he didn’t do too bad with limited resources.8 May 2018 at 11:42 pm #168981There is no reason at all why Latics can not survive in the championship.

Is that the same Barnsley & Burton who were relegated from the Championship on Sunday after only 2 seasons?????
As I said Millwall could be a 1 season wonder at that level. Might not be. At this moment we don’t know but they too will find things difficult next season.
Wigan as a Town isn’t very big. The borough is, but half of that hates WiganIt’s not negativity from me it’s realism. Last time we went up a load of Latics fans got carried away & thought we’d be top half and or playoffs and it was a struggle
I know we have a different manager and some different players but it is still going to be very difficult unless outside money comes in
The journalist isn’t having a dig he’s just being realistic and I see nowt wrong with that8 May 2018 at 11:45 pm #168982Its not always all about the money. A good Manager with half decent players with a good team spirit goes along way.

Last time we had Jewell who knew the right players buts let not kid ourselves, we were big spenders on transfer fees for the time. £3mill for the Duke, big money for Roberts, plus plenty of others9 May 2018 at 12:10 am #168983We GOT £3M for the Duke, I think we paid around £1M or a bit less ….that said your overall point remains valid, it was big money then and it’s likely ‘out of our current reach’ money now, unless new investment comes in.
The worry for me is if we don’t get Prem football in two years (and it’s hghly unlikely we will) what will be the position of the Hong Kong group then ? Continue to chase and invest further or will they pull up the drawbridge and cut their losses ?
