Mate of mine North of the border said Scott McDonald thrives off chances like this clip of direct football. Not sure whether he will be as effective up front on his own relying on some very patient possession orientated build up play?

http://www.wigantoday.net/sport/wigan-athletic/sharpe-latics-loan-stars-have-a-point-to-prove-1-7261123Seems weird a club like St Mirren would let his contract run down with no fee in return, when such a good player moved on? Saying that they did try to ‘kebab’ him didn’t they?

Let’s hope they can prove some of us right albeit being at a lower level! :)

Why are we after him then?

20 May 2015 at 6:02 pm #142367midfielder David Perkins.
Perkins is available on a free transfer after he was one of 17 players to be released by Blackpool earlier this week.
The 32-year-old joined Blackpool in January 2014 and made 67 appearances for the Seasiders during his 18-month spell at Bloomfield Road.
Perkins was a regular in Lee Clark’s side last season, but was unable to help the side avoid relegation from the Championship.
A number of clubs are thought to have expressed an interest in Perkins, but Wigan are believed to be in pole position to land the former Barnsley man.
Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is planning major changes at the DW Stadium, with a big overhaul of the squad expected in the wake of their relegation to League One.
Caldwell is thought to be an admirer of Perkins and sees his experience as a vital addition to his side for next season as he plots an immediate return to the second tier.
20 May 2015 at 6:04 pm #142368HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Wigan are hoping to land Rotherham defender Craig Morgan on a free transfer this summer.
Morgan is out of contract at the New York Stadium next month and although he has been offered fresh terms he has yet to sign a new deal at the South Yorkshire outfit.
Wales international Morgan has established himself as a key man for Rotherham since joining the club on a free transfer from Preston in the summer of 2012.
The 29-year-old helped the club win successive promotions from League Two to the Championship and was instrumental in securing survival in the second tier this term despite being hit by a three point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.
Wigan are now hoping to lure Morgan to the DW Stadium as they plan to build a side capable of winning promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.
A number of stars are expected to leave Wigan in the wake of their relegation and Gary Caldwell sees Morgan’s leadership qualities and experience as a key addition to his squad for next season.
HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Wigan Athletic are hoping to win the race to sign St Mirren midfielder John McGinn on a free transfer this summer.
Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is keen to rebuild the squad at the DW Stadium in the wake of their relegation from the Championship, with a number of players expected to move on.
Wigan scouts are thought to have watched McGinn in action on numerous occasions this season, and they are now preparing a move for the Scotland Under-21 international.
Celtic have held a long-term interest in McGinn and where linked with a move for the midfielder in the January transfer window before they signed Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven from Dundee United.
However, Wigan are hopeful they will be able to lure the skilful midfielder to England as they look to make an immediate return to the second tier next season.
20 May 2015 at 6:30 pm #142370Former Bristol City striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Tranmere Rovers midfielder Max Power are a target for Wigan Athletic, reports mancunianmatters.co.uk
Power is attracting interest from Wigan Athletic
Latics boss Gary Caldwell is looking for a striker to fire the club back to the Championship at the first attempt and sees the former Arsenal striker as the man to do that.Tranmere look set to lose midfielder Power this summer following relegation to the Conference.
Power, who scored 13 goals in 52 appearances this season, is out-of-contract at Prenton Park this summer and had attracted interest from Rangers and Celtic during the season.
Rovers may be entitled to compensation should the midfielder move on in the close season as he under 24.
Emmanuel-Thomas is a free agent after being released by Bristol City at the end of the season and is attracting interest from a number of Championship clubs including Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest.
The striker scored 12 goals in 48 appearances this season as the Robins completed a Football League double by winning League One and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

True Phil, I forgot we only have strikers in the stand, on the bench or playing across Europe for other clubs.
