Martinez may not be the man for the job… but we will make his job a lot flaming harder if he’s greeted with banners in the home end calling him for him to be sacked with 10 games to go. I repeat. What are the positives in doing that? Are we going to sack him and get a replacement in that will do a better job? No chance.

Personally, I think he was always going to be a gamble. I’ve no problem with that. Ultimately though I agree 100% with VAT69, I don’t care what league we are in if we play a brand of football like last night.

      :D

Whelan’s comments show that he is still firmly behind Martinez, as fans we all want things to happen overnight but in reality it doesn’t work like that, we’ve got a decent squad and I hope we’re good enough to stay up, I’d love to have a trip to Europe one year.

I will start by pointing out that there were a number of us who were not only responsible for the banner but stand by what was written on it.

The facts are that this squad of players is easily the best we have ever had. Look at Birmingham, Fulham, Stoke and Blackburn and tell me they have better players than us. We find ourselves up to 12 points behind some of them and unable to record a single victory against any of them (For the record I have paid good money to see all seven games). We have conceeded eight more goals (with pretty much the same back five as under Bruce) than we did in the whole of last season and there are still ten games to go. The facts are that under Martinez we are unable to defend even though he sets us up with one up top and at least one holding midfielder. Apart from a wonder goal from Scharner against Stoke the performances offensivley against Bolton, Stoke and Spurs (to name a few recent ones)were just inept.

I take foolsgold point, but no-one supports the players as much as I do. It is the managers inability to see what is happening and his ineptness to make decisions to impact on the game that brings me to the decision that he is just not up to the job. Numerous times this season he has just changed players like for like when a change in the system was required.

Tini, for the record I had not left and neither had any of the people I was with. We all clapped the players off which was fully deserved.

As for James C, I have been watching Wigan Athletic for 33 years. I remember players like Noel Ward, Peter Houghton, Joe Hinnigan and Colin Methven to name a few. I have been to Brighton, Bournmouth, Torquay, Barnet and Aldershot amongst other remote parts of the UK. I wont even get started on pre season trips to Holland.

Loudmouthblue points out the facts and they are alarming to say the least. Theres no point bleating on about beating Chelsea and Liverpool (Both of who never turned up) and then getting rolled over 4-0 at Portsmouth etc…etc…

As for standish walkerman you will be delighted to know I am sure that I have played semi pro and used to get paid for turning out half baked on a Saturday. I know ex-pros both in business and personally who I know share our views on Martinez. If you think this squad of players is good enough to fight out relegation along with Hull and Wolves then I am afraid it is you that is the idiot. And what is Xenophobic? It sounds like a playstation game that you clearly spend all your pocket money on.

Finally,I must point out that I love Wigan Athletic. I have never booed them and would NOT condone anyone who did.

You’ve never booed them and would NOT condone anyone who did – you claim at the start of your essay that you are partly responsible for the banner, you may as well boo pal !

What is frustrating but slightly understanding is our acceptance of mediocre success. We have been punching above our weight for two seasons but incase we havn’t noticed we’ve been here for a while now.

If we let this nipple lead the way, we’ll be playing in the Championship within two seasons. Now ask the fans of the big, big clubs that are down there if they should have sacked the manager the yr before.

Footy is a fickle sport, but if you cant take the heat, dont take the wages!

Now does anyone have Alans number?. Ive looked up ‘Curbishley’ in the BT Phonebook and theres far too many.

The 8-1-1 was a lighthearted joke but seeing as you see fit to get personal I have noticed you may have misspelt your username – by maybe just one letter

You’re right. We play 4-5-1 and should therefore have a left footed midfielder on the left.

And you got me, my real name is Standish Waller.

                      Pieman,

‘The facts are that this squad of players is easily the best we have ever had’

                      Then you say:

‘If you think this squad of players is good enough to fight out relegation along with Hull and Wolves then I am afraid it is you that is the idiot.’

                      Which is it to be?

‘as for standish walkerman you will be delighted to know I am sure that I have played semi pro and used to get paid for turning out half baked on a Saturday.’

You’re right, I am delighted, but are you sure, completely sure, that you played semi-pro?

‘…know ex-pros both in business and personally who I know share our views on Martinez.’

Congratulations, so do I. Let’s play present and ex-footballer Top Trumps.

‘And what is Xenophobic? It sounds like a playstation game that you clearly spend all your pocket money on.’

No, all my pocket money is spent on bottles of Merrydown, Slalom Lager on Fridays and Saturday morning cinema.

‘Finally,I must point out that I love Wigan Athletic. I have never booed them and would NOT condone anyone who did.’

But grown men with a banner is okay?

Why would a (or group of) grown man/men take a banner to a game? We are hardly in a false position, we were in the same position this time last year under Bruce but I didn’t see any banners then. The 2nd half of last season was a joke, we were awful and although we didn’t get beat 9-1 or lose 10-0 over 2 games to Utd we were getting beat left, right and centre by other teams including a heavy loss at Stoke and West Brom.

What we didn’t do last season was beat a top 4 side, something we have done twice this season and we still have to play Arsenal and Chelsea so there’s a possibility we can do it again under Martinez.

Bruce was in charge for what, around 18 months and didn’t manage to beat a top 4 side in how many attempts? Jewell, for all the memories and good times he brought the club didn’t manage it in the league (beat Arsenal at home and over 2 games in the cup). Roberto took charge in the summer, stated he needed 3 transfer windows to get his side how he would like it and so far he’s had 2 so really, providing he keeps us up this season we should only be judging him next season.

The formation Roberto plays isn’t negative unless you look at it in a negative way. Yes, we only play 1 striker but when we go forward we have that striker along with 2 wingers and an attacking midfielder so we have a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 attacking formation. When we’ve not got the ball our wingers can then cover their full backs and our attacking midfielder can fill in as a centre mid so our formation changes to a 4-5-1 or 4-3-2-1 defensive formation. What Roberto accomplished on Monday night was how to tactically out-play/class a Liverpool team who play the same sort of style.

Roberto has openly stated he wants to have us in Europe within the next 3 season (including this season) and we all know he is a proud supporter and ex-player or Wigan Athletic.

It will hurt him as a fan, past player and manager just as much as it hurts you or me when we lose BUT his job is to fight back and on the whole this season we have reacted well to poor results and have been very unlucky on more than 1 occasion (Birmingham away and Spurs at home most recently with a laughable penalty decision and a clear offside).

I have supported Roberto from day 1 and will continue to do so as I believe he will bring success. I am a huge fan of his, always have been and although I don’t know for sure I firmly believe and hope Roberto will be in charge of our club for many more years to come taking us on to much bigger things. I certainly wouldn’t prefer it to be anybody else!
