You say 5 teams have done the same. I know one is Wolves, and I suspect Southampton are too, who are the others?

Swindon and Wolves did the double drop, Portsmouth, Man City, Charlton and now Wigan went down again the following season!

Minus 25 goal difference and just 39 goals scored in 46 matches! Only Blackpool scored fewer and that was only 3 less! Great season! I still find it difficult to understand why so many of our fans accepted everything that has gone on without a whimper? Blind faith at its most extreme ! I am not being funny but I will watching the transfer market with a very keen eye for the next few months because I do not want to waste ( very apt adjective! ) my money on a season ticket if I think it will be more of the same! A good idea could be to see how they start next season, say for the first 5 or 6 games before stumping up your hard earned cash because I have a feeling that this rot will continue!

&, fil, if the rot continues i will still be supporting my club no matter what. Like JR i have seen periods a hell of a lot worse than this season. You should have been there in the early 90’s, which from what you have posted in the past you wasnt as you have only supported this club for (is it) 10 years now & have yet, haven’t seen the bad times. However, the idea of supporting a football team is to support it through its tough times as well as the good times. This season has been shit & if it continues next season i will still be there no matter what, & in my case, work permitting.

It amazes me how some fans view the more positive and loyal supporters as lacking passion because they don’t scream, shout and spit dummies.

As people above have written, there have been far worse performances and situations in the past. Perhaps the “Lightside” have a better understanding of life in general and understand that they must make the best of good times because they know that there are the occasional bad times just around the corner.

There is no doubt Dave Whelan has made some serious errors of judgement lately (some of which we will undoubtedly never know) which have led to the rapid decline of our club from the heady days of 2013. There are so many variables involved and is not as simple as “play two up front”. He has not abandoned us however and I am confident that he will make sure that the good times return in the not too distant future.

The reason that I don’t shout and scream is because:
        1. I have seen it all before.
        2. Dave Whelan’s heart and wallet have always been in the right place.
        3. Mistakes and errors of judgement are inescapable in the real world.
        4. I prefer to suffer with a little bit of dignity (Stoicism used to be admired in my day)

PS Don’t ever compare Dave Whelan with those clowns at Blackpool!

It’s 12 yrs since I started paying to come on when my Saturday afternoons became free for various reasons! Now the reasons for the previous bad times are not the same reasons as this time and this time could have easily been avoided and should have! My beef is with the way things are going when they shouldn’t be, doing everything on the cheap whilst increasing season ticket prices ( Twice since the drop ) and the latest managerial acquisition just happens to be a much maligned player who many on here have slated to fuck left right and centre yet now he is the king pin! None of it makes sense to me! The return to the Martinez possession at all costs football is a main concern for me as a paying fan/customer ( same thing! ) because I fuckin hated that shit the first time around and I do not want to waste my money watching that shit again, especially after this seasons pathetic efforts! That style of football is not going to work in League One! If I decide not to renew which will be the first time since my first match it won’t be because I am turning my back on the club because they have been relegated, it will be because I don’t agree with the way things are being done/run, that is my prerogative and if the blind faith loyal think that is a sham then so be it but I ain’t no fool! I shall see what happens during the Summer months and probably see how the season goes initially before forking out £300+! Some will think of me as a fair weather supporter but they are wrong, I for one am making a personal stance because everyone else seems to think that it is the norm when clearly the stats say otherwise!

Passing between defenders sideways and backwards seems to be the way for some. Too much chance of losing possession for me and after five or six going no frgging where passed it is generally cleared or sent back to the keeper when it would be quicker to do that in the first place. Each to their own though, some people like it that way and even say its the Latics way. Well it never used to be before someone arrived. It is certainly not the Watford, Bournemouth and MK Dons way either and they have found the goals easy to come.

            #141935

It took us a while under Bobby to get the passing game right, and never quite did to PL standards.

However – in League One it could be different. But it still needs to be got right. As you say a bit too much sideways rather than incisively forward at present, but it’s a new idea for many of our players. The style is to play a passing game which includes a few killer passes cutting defences open. That will be worked on on the training ground.

Get the passing right first, and then learn to take the ball forward. Innovative at that level, and I think will be effective.

            #141936

Get the formation right and a whole world of problems will be eradicated. I am not a lover of wing backs because to me it is probably the most specialised outfield position on a football pitch and we simply do not have the quality of player to fill the role. The Ashley Coles of this world are very scarce. We are now in Div 1 so we need to adapt. Simplify things and forget we were a Premier League team and build from the back. All our problems this season have been caused because we just could not handle teams playing 4-4-2 and we have got to stop leaking goals. There was absolutely no reason for us to be relegated with the players we had but likewise no reason not to push for promotion next season with the same squad. Go back to basics and go for it. Onward and upward.

Turning your back on the club for ANY reason means you are not a true supporter Fil.I’m sorry but that’s how it is. Ask yourself, would you come back watching them if they started playing well, winning games etc…if the answer is yes, then you are a classic Johnny cum fucking Lately!!

I suggest you invest a bit more money and get a season ticket for united or City, if its classy football you want and demand to see week in week out.

The priority for Wigan athletic football club is and should always be keeping the books balanced, otherwise we have no feking club. It’s not a great position to be in, but I fully understand why we will be investing in young blood and signing the likes of Billy Clarke next season and not Jordan Rhodes.

              From Matlock to ManU
              What a journey!

League One won’t be no walk in the park that’s for sure! There were a few blind faith merchants

Not that I personally am a blind faith merchant – despite, and not caring at all, what you and the Preston know-nowts might think – but I’d rather be one of those than a miserable, negative moaning twat.

I really don’t know why some of you lot even bother watching Wigan (note I didn’t say supporting) as you seem to hate everything about it.

I don’t come from Preston? I haven’t said that I am not going to buy a season ticket, I said I shall wait and see! Do you think that there will be the same home following next season? I am willing to bet that there are a few thousand less! It’s a wheat from the chaff scenario as far as you ‘Goole Away’ merchants are concerned and deep down you love it! You would say nothing if we went down again next season and again you would berate the fans who moan but it is those that moan that really care in my opinion! We should NOT have gone down this season and some of us pointed out the glaring errors that were being made whilst the ‘True Supporters’ as you like to be called just sat back and took it on the chin without a fuckin whimper! Some of you even tried to get behind Whelan and his hairbrained idea to bring in Malky Mackay! You really couldn’t make this shit up ! :)

Can see Filmoss’s point’s .This seasons completely embarrassing debacle could have been avoided and for me the management have made 1 cock up after another. I for one will still renew and get behind the manager albeit I dread the idea of more pass the air out the ball crap which will not bear fruit in league 1.Caldwell certainly wasn’t on my radar Mick Warburton with Caldwell as assistant was my hopeful choice. We have gone from FA cup winners to a laughing stock in less than 2 years and I like Filmoss will be watching our transfer dealings closely. What will happen as far as Delort,Riera,Holt ? Aren’t they still under contract ? Will the club recall them or pay up their contracts ? I could see Delort,Holt returning which I like the idea of. So yes it’s been bollocks but time to enjoy the break and come back and maybe win a game or two.

Not for the first time, I doff my cap to you, sir. Couldn’t agree more, though I do wish I could resist jumping in with both feet sometimes on here. It’s one of the reasons why I don’t visit the forum anything like as much as I used to. There are only so many times you can/should bang your head against the wall.

Of all your points, the one I agree with most is this nonsensical idea that those of us who remain positive and support what the club tries to do don’t actually realise that mistakes have been made and are totally happy with things at the club. Blind faith, if you will. Just because we don’t throw huge tantrums and sulk like kids when things go wrong. Like any of them have the first idea what it is like to try to run a football club.

What’s the old adage, empty vessels make most sound?

What a sanctimonious and sycophantic post! Have you ever thought that we might be of a more passionate nature, not a bad trait in my eyes! You have called fans before today for rising out of their seats in your stand and getting animated, well that is a passionate fan and there is nothing wrong with it! Fans come from all manner of backgrounds but come match day they are one in my book and just because some happen to have degrees and the like and work in an office environment, they are no better than say the working class guy who works on a shop floor or on a building site! Football matches are a far far cry from the sterile atmosphere of your typical office !
