In almost 50 years as a fan and visiting all but a few away grounds during and post hooligan era I can honestly say that personally I’ve never been embroiled in any trouble. Wrexham away the worst when I was thrown onto the pitch by a Welshman to avoid the mayhem around me. If you use your loaf away days are as safe as you make them. I’ve had some amazing days out through the years and hope for more to come once retired.

Not good with kids though. Which is sad, because theyre the future.

      Happy days.
Also witnessed the scrap in the tunnel after Sunderland in 1988.

Still the funniest thing I’ve ever seen at a football match:

The thing, I suppose, is that those of us who have experienced those days of the 70s and 80s know how to keep out of that sort of problem. We now how to blend in, cross the road or whatever is needed.
But the problem is not opposing ‘hoolies’, but our own drunken louts who have no respect for our own fans, don’t see why they shouldn’t do whatever they want in OUR stands, chuck flares about willy-nilly and make a match going experience for us wanting to take youngsters really bad.

They seem to hit the sherbat as if that’s all part of the match day thing. Seem to be groups of piss heads rather than one or two these days.
I once saw two lads at Griffin Park in the eighties absolutely rat arsed. Thought they’d never get in. Well they did get in, propped themselves against a barrier then promptly marched out. Took their money first.

I dont know about anybody else, but if I went to a match and had a few pints beforehand, and I’ve done it a lot in the past, without getting ratted and being obstructive or a nuisance to others, I’d be bursting for a pee about 20 mins in. Especially this time of year.

The football and drink link just puzzles me. I saw a post recently where someone was saying “if you go the match just for the football, your a w*****” or something very similar. Why? I go the match because I like football and support Wigan Athletic. I dont need a drink or drugs to ‘buzz’, I buzz off seeing our lads play well and win games. I buzz off my kids enjoying it too. If you need to shove powder up your nose to have a good time, you are weak in my book. It won’t get you anywhere.

My mate is an Everton die hard. Goes everywhere with them. Hes off to Cyprus this week as its all booked and all that. He said that as its a nothing game, he can see him and his mates, who are staying in Paphos, 2 hours away from where they are playing, not even going to the game and just having a good booze up. I couldnt be arsed, could you?

I am hoping for a big home draw in the next round. Everton at Wigan or something like that. Assuming we get through. At least I can sit in my own seat then.and watch the game in peace without the hassles of Friday night.

Have I not been banging on about fans standing up blocking kids views at away games?
They don’t need to be drunk they still block views if full of ale or not. Even last night the seating area which I chose specifically as I like sitting down at matches, had people standing. I had to tell a group of 5-6 fans stood up in front of me to sit down which was met with the usual glare and ignorance. This really needs sorting otherwise the young uns and owd uns will stop going. Paying extra for seats and standing up you cant make it up!

I always wonder why people choose to stand up at the front of a seating area, for 90 minutes when they have a seat, absolutely no need for it. Was at front of seats on Friday and to the right, 3/4 people constantly standing and on the left near the exit there was a bloke who clearly couldn’t take his ale, spent virtually whole game, standing up, going on about having a beer and mithering the stewards…anything but watching the game.

As for Vat69’s points about the drunks on Friday, fella who came with us was behind goal and commented about people using the sinks instead of toilets…don’t know what gets into the minds of people who do that stuff, loads of people have plenty of drink before game, but aren’t so ignorant to do that stuff and watch the game without upsetting others. Don’t get the mentality of spending money/time to get to a game and get so drunk you annoy your fellow Wiganers and risk getting chucked out the ground

I saw around 50 blokes leave the game at around 55 minute mark and asked stewards to let em out so they could have a pint (big chunk being one) when we were one out. One only has to go down to concourse ten mins before half time and after to see some blokes commitment to a good pint!

I go the game, socialise with me mates, have a few beers and watch some football. What’s the problem?

Don’t think anyone would have a problem with that. It’s more grown men spoiling everyone else’s fun, standing in front of kids, pissing in sinks, throwing fireworks on pitch. Now I think about it Blackpool was no different. Aisles full of piss heads who came in ten past three while kids choked on a flare in second half.

The same behaviour isn’t really replicated at home games. In fact as an event the atmosphere on the ground is really quite sterile compared to the past. The loud music and P.A. system too blocks out any chance of an atmosphere building up and old fashioned banter between rival fans is squashed under a cacophony of screaming and music.

One of the cubicles didnt have a toilet fitted, so people pissed all over the floor anyway. Disgusting. And pissing in sinks? Friday was just a disgrace all over. Not taking my kids among such bellends ever again.

                    When did we become Millwall?

                    #163927

Whilst that behaviour isn’t right Vat, I’m not sure you can compare us to Millwall just yet.
