17 May 2010 at 12:19 pm #33732Steven Caldwell is preparing to team up with his brother Gary at Wigan after being released by Burnley.
Defender Caldwell, 29, has been troubled by a groin injury but is considered a reasonable gamble by Wigan on a free transfer.
He could initially replace Gary, who is likely to be out for at least five months after surgery to both his hips.
17 May 2010 at 2:16 pm #33743Not as good as his brother which is a worrying prospect…. Last thing we want to be doing is bringing back together the newcastle defence of a few seasons back….

Could see some truth in this one, Don’t forget Polly came from Rotherham when they went down and he turned out to be a belter.Burnley boss Brian Laws is chasing Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant.
The Daily Mail says Laws is pressing ahead with plans to take Grant from Sheffield Wednesday.
Laws, who was given a stay of execution earlier this week, is ready to offer £1.5million for Grant after inquiring about the former England U21 keeper in January.
Wigan Athletic are also interested in Grant among others as they look to increase competition for Chris Kirkland.
Huddersfield have a promising ‘keeper, I think they’ll be getting a lot of competition to keep him next season.

He’s been linked with a move to Everton for a good while now.

However, Steven hasn’t looked very good when I’ve seen him, and we don’t really need another centre-half, do we? Bramble, Caldwell, Gohouri, Alcaraz and Boyce should suffice.
And Amaya. 8-)

17 May 2010 at 3:15 pm #33753David Wheater says he is planning to be at Middlesbrough next season, but accepts a decision may be taken out of his hands this summer.
The home-grown defender had been tipped to leave The Riverside last summer after Boro’s relegation from the Premier League, only to stay for the club’s disappointing Championship campaign.
He now has just 12 months remaining on his contract and is again likely to attract interest from clubs in the top flight over the coming weeks – with Bolton and Wigan reportedly ready to lock horns for his services.
The 23-year-old, who has made over 130 appearances for Boro, is keen to stay on Teesside and aid the club’s bid for a return to the Premier League next season.
However, he is also aware that any need to bring in extra finance could lead to him being sold during the transfer window.
“I’ve always said I’m happy to stay and I wouldn’t ask for a transfer, but it’s for the manager, Keith Lamb and the chairman to sort out, really,” Wheater told the Evening Gazette.
“I’ve got a year left, so I’ll see what happens in the summer.
“Obviously, if I’m here I want us to get promoted, but you don’t know where you’re going to be with the way football is at the moment, clubs need cash.
“Obviously, I’ve got a year left so I’ll definitely be back for pre-season. This is my club so I’m going to try my hardest, until I leave.”

[link2:3b47dczi]Story here,http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2557/news/2010/05/17/1928557/ruben-baraja-happy-with-emotional-valencia-farewell-as-west?%5B/link2:3b47dczi%5D
This story here suggests that Wigan are interested in any developments regarding Ruben Baraja as he’s now out of contract at Valencia. What do you think? He’s been phased out of Valencia’s squad recently but as a holding midfielder I think he would be pretty good for us, and experienced too. He’d be a free transfer but I think wages could be a stumbling block, no idea how much the guy was on in Spain.
17 May 2010 at 3:40 pm #33762Would love at the club
17 May 2010 at 5:03 pm #33767How about we offer Caldwell in exchange?
