“I knew when I took the job on there had to be a restructure of the squad in terms of it being leaner and also dealing with the contract situation so that then really comes to pass when the January window opens up,” said Mackay.

“It was a process that was going to start in January and we are in the middle of it.
“Depending on situations there may be another couple on the fringes that may leave but in the main it will be about trying to replenish the squad.”

Liverpool youngster Sheyi Ojo is expected to join Wigan Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

The Reds are in talks with the Championship outfit over a temporary move for the 17-year-old winger.

Boss Brendan Rodgers believes Ojo’s development would benefit from a spell playing regular first-team football.

The England youth international, who joined Liverpool from MK Dons in 2011, has yet to make his senior debut for the Reds but has been a regular at Melwood this season. He was an unused substitute in the games against Burnley and Leicester over the festive period.

Liverpool Under-21s boss Michael Beale told the ECHO earlier this week that Ojo had attracted interest from a number of clubs throughout the Football League.

“There’s a lot of interest around him in terms of a loan,” he said.

“We’ve got to make sure it’s the right thing for Sheyi and if he goes out that he’s going to play and if he’s not going to play, he’s got to get access – like Conor Randall at Shrewsbury – to come back and play for us.”

I’m staggered that McManaman went for a fee, I would assume, in the multi millions. He had lots of moments in games for us, notably in the FA Cup winning season, but very rarely good full games. A top level player will show his quality and value early on. This lad was sent out on loan from a thin on quality, perennial relegation fighting squad because he wasn’t good enough. If he had been, he would have been playing. He played lead role in a fairy tale, that’s his claim to fame. His departure is our gain, IMO, and especially banking a substantial seven figure sum for him.

Leeds United centre-half Jason Pearce has signed for Wigan Athletic from Leeds United for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old joins Latics having made 99 league appearances for Leeds, having previously played at Bournemouth and Portsmouth.

He passed a medical at the DW Stadium today and put pen to paper on a long term deal before travelling with the team ahead of tomorrow’s Sky Bet Championship match against Ipswich Town. Pearce will wear the number 28 shirt.

Latics manager Malky Mackay welcomed Pearce to the club, saying:

“I’m delighted that he has agreed to join us. He’s someone we’ve been tracking for a while, a really powerful centre half, a leader and a warrior on the pitch, who has captained every club he has played at, and is exactly the type of player I want at the club.

“He’s hungry to play and will hopefully quickly become a fan’s favourite for the example he sets on the pitch. We’ve spoken to a lot of people about him and every single reference has come back positively, in that he is the right character we are seeking, someone who takes responsibility on the pitch and energises those around him.”

“He’s built up considerable experience now and knows this league inside out and we’re delighted we’ve managed to get him. When we found out he might be available we immediately did all we could to get him because he’s a player who can play a major role in taking the club forwards.”

Pearce was born in Hillingdon in London and became an apprentice at Portsmouth before moving on to Bournemouth and making his league debut for The Cherries. He was sold back to Pompey in 2011 before moving to Leeds United in 2012, for whom he has been pretty much ever-present.

So Roy Hodgson saw a few re-runs of the FA Cup Final too? I think his remote consideration for selection would have been more about the dearth of English talent rather than Callum McManaman’s talent.

In order to find out more about Pearce’s time at Leeds we reached out to a couple of fan sites. We were happy to receive submissions from both Kevin of Leeds United Mad @LeedsUnited_MAD) and Adam of the Marching on Together site forum (@motforum).

Thanks to Kevin and his site for the post below:

Jason Pearce was former United manager Neil Warnock’s first long-term signing in May 2012 when he joined the club from Portsmouth. He was highly-rated at the time and it was considered a coup that he joined the Whites.

Pearce, who started his career at Fratton Park as a trainee before moving along the coast to Bournemouth, was named Portsmouth’s Player of the Year in 2011/12 and won seven of the nine supporters’ awards.

The player had gained his reputation at Bournemouth, where he spent four years, skippering the side, before returning to Pompey at the start of the 2011/12 season in a £500,000 deal.

Initially his tough-tackling no-nonsense nature was a big hit with the Elland Road support but lately his indecision at times was a frustration, even though he was made skipper at the start of the season.

Therefore, when Liam Cooper and the erratic Giuseppe Bellusci forged a partnership when Pearce was suspended, it was generally thought it was better for the United defence. The signing of Sol Bamba seemed to be a suggestion that Pearce was no longer required and a move away seemed to be the logical conclusion for a player with a year left on his contract.

In short, capable when on form and marking a bog-standard centre forward but weaknesses appear when he is up against a more skilful opponent.

Thanks to Adam and his site for this fan’s view:

Signed in 2012 from Portsmouth Pearce was at the heart of Neil Warnock’s squad rebuilding. You cannot question Jason Pearce’s commitment, there can’t be many harder working players out there prepared to but their body on the line for the cause. He will fling himself in front of any ball, foot, man, post to deny a goal with little regard for himself. He will play on bloody and bruised with his head bandaged up. As captain of both Portsmouth and Leeds he was prepared to take responsibility, go get players going, he is a leader.

For all his commitment and strength he is a limited player though. Leeds major deficiency over the past few seasons had been our defence and Pearce has been at the heart of that. His positioning has a lot to be desired and he has a habit of panicking under pressure and slicing the ball straight to an opposition player. For all the points he saved us by heroically throwing himself in front of the ball he probably cost us just as many with his mishaps.

Pearce has slipped down the order at Leeds following the signings of Giuseppe Bellusci and Liam Cooper and with Sol Bamba coming in on load this week his opportunities for the latter part of the season would have been limited. Leeds fans love Pearce for his commitment but I can’t say many will miss him for his footballing ability. Mind you we said the same about Tom Lees and he’s gone on to be one of Sheffield Wednesday’s best players this season since we sold him to them back in August.

Should pair up well with Barnett and Keirnan :woohoo:

I’m not trying to argue it. Most things football are subjective and open to opinion. Even the incumbent England manager’s views are subjective. Like I said, England potential? You’re having a laugh. His sale price was pitched based on a MOM in the cup final and a few other half decent performances. I can’t believe someone as streetwise as Pulis would fall for it.

The latest player that could be heading for the exit door at the DW Stadium is centre back Rob Kiernan.

The 24 year old could well find his options limited at the Latics with the arrival of Jason Pearce and it has emerged that both Charlton and Birmingham have shown an interest in taking the former Watford youngster either on loan or on a permanent deal.

Wigan Athletic can confirm that Northern Ireland international striker Billy Mckay has been transferred to the club from Scottish Premiership side Inverness Caledonian Thistle for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old striker travelled to Wigan to undergo a medical and put pen to paper on a long term deal at the DW Stadium and will be eligible for selection against Ipswich Town, subject to international clearance. Mckay will take up the number 10 shirt.

Manager Malky Mackay said he was delighted to get the deal over the line.

“We’ve been looking at Billy for some time,” he said, “he lives to score and his record over the past two seasons speaks for itself, where’s he’s scored a lot of goals and been deadly for Inverness.

“He can’t wait to begin the next part of his career and we are delighted to bring him on board, we feel he has the potential to make a great impact at Wigan Athletic, he’s a player who comes alive in the box, a sniffer around the opposition goal and certainly a type of player we feel can do well with us.”

Although Mckay plays in Scotland and represents Northern Ireland, he was born in Corby and came through the ranks at Leicester City, eventually signing for Northampton Town under current Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray, in 2009.

After two years at Sixfields, Mckay moved to Inverness Caledonian for whom he has now scored an impressive 54 league goals from a 121 games, including five in his last five Scottish Premiership games, which has pushed Thistle to 3rd in the table.

He earned his full first full international cap from Northern Ireland in a 0-0 draw against Malta in February 2013 and has so far earned eight caps.

We all know how Youtube videos can look unrepresentative (Aghahowa anyone?), but this is every goal he scored last season.

Some good ones, but what I like most are his poached goals – he seems aware of positioning.
