the myth was dispelled years ago – I once sat in a New York hostelry and had analysis from a local about what was wrong with our team and players!!America is about as far removed from football as you can get so when you have become a topic stateside you know you have hit the big time exposure wise.
our crowds are bigger too when you compare the warriors playing a major semi final last night and a crowd of 14,600 turned up and I reckon Leeds brought at least 4000 !
BTW if your middle aged ,toothless and fat don’t try and get down with the Brigantes kids and do that daft song they sing when they are winning – saw two of them last night and it wasn’t a good look.
another thing how come when you see newspaper shots of Wigan RL fans you never seem to know any?
I28 September 2013 at 12:38 pm #121584Strange how the article never mentions that last Sunday saw the lowest league attendance at the DW for over 7 years, despite it not being on TV, and being one of the warmest September afternoons for ages.

From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!28 September 2013 at 4:59 pm #121589Has the myth – put forward mainly by the media and journalist in particular – ever needed to be dispelled?
A bit like the imminent arrival royal baby George and “The World Awaits” sound-bite, when in reality the people of the world couldn’t give a toss.
28 September 2013 at 5:46 pm #121590Whatever the “myth” surrounding the Warriors has been, May 11 2013 and September 19 2013 have blown it to pieces. One was us playing in European competition, something WRLFC will never do and the other was quite simply the biggest piece of sporting history this town has ever seen.
We win the most famous domestic knockout sporting competition on the globe, watched by half the world’s population, while the best they can do is a game 20 miles down the road (in a football stadium) and a cup final at Wembley probably watched by less than 0.01% of the FA Cup final audience.
As for the talk of the Ipswich attendance, warm Friday night, 1 game away from a Grand (lol) final and empty seats everywhere.
We can argue all day over which is the town’s biggest club, but as for the more well known one, that’s just not debatable.
28 September 2013 at 6:03 pm #121591“I feel we may try this poll in Russia and Slovenia, to get a more balanced view….”
We all know what the answer will be. Asking the question is on a par with asking if they think the sun will rise in the morning.
28 September 2013 at 6:28 pm #121593Not really a shock that is it? We all know rugby league only exists in 4 or 5 countries. Only Papua New Guinea class it as their main sport. Now ask the question there or maybe in Fiji, Samoa or Tonga and you’ll probably get a different answer.
The more widely known that WAFC are though the better for the town if you ask me.

I doubt you’ll get a different answer to the Football bit, you might get people who have heard of WRLFC though, and I say might….. anyway, we’ll test the theory when we are in Maribor. Three places left, though Sutty is thinking about taking them….
FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that
28 September 2013 at 10:32 pm #121601I don’t know where you get this “myth” from. Your FA Cup win gave you worldwide exposure – nobody doubts that.
However, face facts. Your crowds are likely to average 25% less this season. You’re now a mid-table championship side who barely get a mention on 5 live and feature for about 30 seconds on BBC1 sometime around midnight – long after Hull City, Fulham, Crystal Palace and all those other well-known clubs.
Supporters of Wigan Warriors have often been accused of living in the past – isn’t that what you are doing now?
Now, why don’t you just forget about the rugby team in Wigan – rather like C&W have forgotten there is a soccerball team. I cant remember the last time there was a mention of you on there.

That may be because of their moderation policy.
Are you suggesting that we should do the same?
Because I’m very happy to.

The myth comes primarily from the journalists of local rags who in an attempt to big-up the game make silly and exaggerated comments about how popular the sport is “worldwide” – worldwide being the few countries that play rugby league.
And since we are still the current holders of the FA Cup and that memory is still clear in the minds of people, including those in Belgium no less, I hardly see how you can accuse us of living in the past.
Maybe the moderators on here should follow the C&W policy and ban any talk of rugby on this board and hopefully we can rid ourselves of boring irritants such as yourself.
