On first glance, and especially to the media and the rest of the ‘football nation’, that looks very poor and embarrassing. But in all reality, we average what? About 15-17,000 home supporters of late?
So really, if we take around that many, its akin to, say Everton, taking 30 odd thousand. Or United taking 70 odd thousand. (not that they could)
We are what we are….and what we are is a small club from a small, Northern town. An economically chsllenged town. We ARE ‘little Wigan’, and yes, we ARE ‘takin the piss’. So what if we don’t ferry fans in on ‘Eire travel’ coaches every week. Thank god we don’t have to enter a bloody ‘ballot’ for tickets. (like Liverpool fans. And they have to buy a fancard for the privilege)
We are constantly judged by our crowds, yet the way I see it, our crowds are alright. Deary me! How we could only dream of having 20k crowds on only a few years ago. Lets not be too harsh on our own attendances. We had 17,000 home fans on against Newcastle. I remember when we had 1,700 on! (as I bet do others) It wasn’t all that long ago.
We could end up with something like 90% or more of our regular home support at Wembley. I mean mainly proper fans, not day trippers. We need to emphasize this at all times to any press or media who push for fan interviews or comments. I’m sure no other club could boast such a thing. We should be proud.[/quote]

Just to add as well, I spoke to a Liverpool fan earlier tonight and asked him about Wembley.
His view was that Wembley Stadium is TOO big. So big it detracts from the atmosphere and experience, and was, I quote “like the Emirates, but with an extra tier on it”.
I’ve thought it looks too big myself, looking at it on the Wembley website. Too big for any game other than one between two sides of mass commercial appeal, like United, Liverpool, or Chelsea, who would ship in day trippers and corporate fans by the trainload. (or plane load) It simply wasn’t built to host Wigan V Millwall. But the decision to play it there was done on the assumption it would BE United V Chelsea, or suchlikes in the semis. I bet there’s some marketing guy somewhere really cheesed off that us and Millwall are there. Less money making ability. And that’s all Wembley seems to be, a money making tool.
I’m glad we’re in the semi, I really am. I just think that when they are throwing digs at us on telly, etc for our ‘poor support’ nobody will throw it back at them that playing the game in such a vast arena was nonsensical in the first place. Surely Villa Park would’ve been sufficient for all concerned?
EDIT: In comparison, Wembley at 90,000 capacity is the second largest football stadium in Europe, behind Barcelona’s Camp Nou at 98,000 and odd, and just ahead of Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu at 85,000 and odd. That puts it into perspective.

I’ve said it many a time. I couldn’t care less if I was the only fan there as long as we win.
