It is looking like some reporter has got Whelan as saying he is going to sell the Club, as after the deaths of some close friends recently.

He doesn’t want to pass on the Burden of a Club that has sucked somewhere in the region of £100 million from his bank account, on to his grandchildren.

The dark side are going to be jumping for joy now aren’t they???? We of course are going to get the multibillionaires queueing at the door to take us on to the World domination  they think we should be doing.

If it’s true, Thanks for everything Dave, it was a great journey

I think its probably about time to be honest. all great things have to come to an end soon. I would rather him sell up than die in the job. He has been edging towards it for a little while now and whilst i think he is making the right decision there will always be only one dave whelan and he should have a statue erected outside the stadium

Anybody got a box of tissues for Bickymon? He’ll have a right arm like Popeye when he hears this

Very interesting times ahead. We’ve heard all this before, of course, but as has been said, all good things must come to an end.

Can’t see there being a queue of hundreds of billionaires fighting to take over.

As the saying goes “you don’t know what you had until it’s gone”

Well it was good while it lasted!

I dont think the club is in that bad a shape financially and so could be a nice little prospect for someone who has a vision of moving the club onto the next level. I dont think DW has had that vision since we came up. He mentioned Europe and the likes as his vision but that takes time and financial input which many will agree he hasn’t really “gone for it” so to speak ! His prerogative by the way and now with this latest rumour who could blame him if he did sell. Deaths of family or friends always makes people think about their own mortality and sometimes these thoughts can bring about changes in lifestyles etc. I just hope his successor has the actions to go with the vision because we are in a position to build with the right backing. All this “We are punching above our own weight” stuff annoys me because why shouldn’t we move up a level and continue to strengthen and establish ? Too many people seem to accept that we shouldn’t really be in the Prem which I find quite negative. We need to drop this “Little Wigan” tag because its undermining in my view yet loads of our fans love it !! Forget the past and look to the future and have some vision thats what I say. No doubt I will get berated for wanting to move forward but nothing ever got done reminiscing about bygone days ! The funny thing is that I have been called a “Dark side” member but surely my vision is quite the opposite ! It is the ones who think we have come as far as we can that are the negative darksiders in my view !!

I wonder if that guy from Singapore (the one who was going to buy Liverpool) would be interested. He could setup a load of theme bars called “Athletico’s” ;)

If its true then could be quite interesting come January, he will want to sell a club thats still in the premiership so he could speculate to accumulate and splash some good cash in January
Good luck to him anyway love him or hate him he made this club and got it where it is so he deserves a good few bob from it if he goes.
Good Luck Dave just one request if you go, please find Bobby a job as your Butler or anything just take him with you !!!!!

I would have thought the only commodity that Wigan has is being in the premiership, a few players as assets and a ground wont sell for much these days.

For all those who wanted this to happen, welcome to your future, instability and unknown owners…..

It was good while it lasted !

I don’t think we should panic just yet about Whelan selling the club. He was talking about why he understood the Walker family’s decision to sell Blackburn and that one day he will have to do the same thing – we all knew this would be the case at some point.

Here’s a copy of an article which I think has all of his quotes. I used to work with the journalist who wrote it at my old paper so it is going to be far more accurate than what some hack from the Mirror wrote!

By Andy Cryer » Blackburn Rovers reporter

DAVE Whelan insists Blackburn Rovers’ ‘fantastic history’ will always remain but admits he understands why the club’s Walker Trust owners are preparing the way for a new dawn.

Wigan’s owner believes his side’s Premier League visit to Ewood Park on Saturday is a fitting way to pay his respects to former Rovers team-mate and close friend Ronnie Clayton, who died on Friday aged 76.

As well as another chance for supporters to pay their respects to Clayton, Saturday’s Ewood Park could be the start of a new Rovers chapter.

Indian poultry giants Venky’s are hopeful of completing their £46million purchase of Rovers by the end of the week, with Whelan admitting he sympathises with the club’s current owners.

He said: “It is an unusual situation. There are going to be very few clubs left owned by British people or English people. If Blackburn Rovers get somebody who is prepared to put money into the club I am sure the supporters will be happy.

“I know the Walker family will be happy as well. I will have the same problem here, whether it is this year, next year or three of four years. Because I am not getting any younger.

“It would be unfair of me to pass this club into the hands of my grandchildren. So I will be in the same situation in the next few years that the Walker family are in.

“I have been putting money into this football club which has cost me over 100 million pounds so It is not fair if I pass this football club down to my family.

“That is exactly what has happened at Blackburn Rovers. As Jack Walker put fortunes into Blackburn and I know his family have supported them for many years and time has come for them to stop pumping money into the club. It will happen to me. It is not a pleasant thing when it happens.”

Whelan though is confident Clayton’s memory will live long at Ewood Park having stayed firm friends with the former England skipper ever since playing with him in the late 1950s and early 1960’s.

He said: “Every football club has history and Blackburn Rovers football club has fantastic history. It is one of the founder members of the football league.

“It will be so sad in one way on Saturday but it is exciting in another because we can pay our respects to John Benson and Ronnie Clayton at the same time. That is so fitting for Wigan and Blackburn because they both mean so much to me and to both clubs.

“Ronnie Clayton was a great player and a great man. I am so upset by the news and I wish his family and friends my deepest condolences and sympathies.”

Hmmm. Perhaps we are being a bit previous then, after all?

                  No mate, it’s not. :)

Just reading Swindon’s post indicates that Whelan may not be quite as ready to sell up as it first appeared this morning, that’s all.
