At the same time as the rent being good economically though – so is not p*ssing off the people who pay you rent.
Basically it’s an empty gesture from DW and nothing more.

An empty gesture that has p****d off more fans of his own club than it has pleased fans of someone elses club.
Their fans hate him for saving them from extinction???Its just another idiotic ego boost for Dave Whelan.
All we can do is boycott it in the hope eventually someone at our club has some say about how it is run, and they have the b****x to stand up to the old goat.
Never forget!!
20 August 2009 at 2:14 am #5748Not really gonna happen though is it? Well until he sells up.
The rugby fans hate him because of the playoff incident.

They’ve hated him ever since he moved them to the JJB.
Even though the move paid off all their debts and gave them a clean sheet to start again. The play off helped to reinforce it.
I bet they are pissed off now they are paying tennants.
20 August 2009 at 2:32 am #5753I bet they are yellow water off now they are paying tennants.Oh yeah. As someone posted on C & W though, at least we weren’t kicked out of Central Park for a playoff game.
On a separate note – would Latics fans have gone to watch WAFC at Central Park had DW’s plans of redeveloping Central Park gone ahead?
20 August 2009 at 2:49 am #5758theres not a snowball in hells chance i would watch a home match had the tics moved to central park,
20 August 2009 at 3:06 am #5759“All what you say above may be true and so be it, but it misses the point. I bet if either of the clubs you mention own the ground, their tennent won’t have a Stand named after one of their idols. If it was jointly owned or independently owned then thats different.
We know we are the main team in Wigan and they are in our shadow.
We are glad they pay us rent and understand totally the economics of the arrangement.
We know that we will now get priority over fixture clashes, and we do get behind our team and focus on all things latics.
The point you seem to have missed is it is a football ground owned by our football club, by all means rent it out if it gets sone income, but why name anything after some peanut hugging klump who has no affiliation to WAFC.
Its plain wrong, embarrassing and laughable.”..Well said Horc….Its plain wrong, embarrassing and laughable! It could only happen at this club!
Up the Latics!

It would have been away matches only for me.
20 August 2009 at 12:12 pm #5780why not be happy that now you are the towns big club (although as stated, both sides get around about the same home attendance)Where has this been stated?
I reckon:
Latics average 18,500, rugby average 14,500
Average away support at Latics is 3,500 (from the programme)So even allowing for no away support at rugby, Latics still get more
There are probably 2,000 away fans on average at rugby games (when you consider Saints bring 7-8,000) so there home support is around 12,000 versus 14 v 15k of ours.
And their number includes around 1,500 a game who don’t actually turn up but they count anyway.
Latics only count those in attendance, the rugby count the number of tickets they’ve sold, or more often given away – a whole stand in the case of one game last year
You need to decide which side your on as if you’re going to come out with drivel like that then it’s clearly not ours. I’ve not seen anyone sticking up for Latics amongst the hatred filled liars and bullshitters over at RLfans.com.
20 August 2009 at 12:22 pm #5784Oh and while I’m on, 40% of the rugby’s 12,000 home fans aren’t actually from Wigan at (from their official website) so the number of actual Wiganers who watch them is closer to 7,200 as the other 4,800 cannot really be considered ‘home supporters’ as they do not come from the home town of the club
They ferried in thousands of Amateur RL players from pit villages all across the North for the Leeds game – they aren’t really home supporters are they?
Still, you keep believing the propaganda……
I just wish Whelan would do something similar about our crowds, if he spent a bit of money on marketing, we could actually get the crowds that he so dearly wants
Instead, he’s too busy mouthing of to the press, telling lies and generally rubbing our fans up the wrong way and then complaining when they don’t come back the next season
20 August 2009 at 12:36 pm #5788Or what ever its name is. Fans boycot that stand till its name is given a latics hero name like Harry lyon, Jason Roberts, Graeme Jones. Get in the corner of the West stand. That name must be never uttered on the breath of a true blue.
Imagine Anfield with a Dixie Dean stand or Citehs council stadium having a George Best stand or the main enclosure at Old Trafford cricket ground being named The White Rose Enclosure. Imagine Paddys bar at Ibrox or the Union Flag Flying over Celtic Park (it should). What about the Tangerine Bar at Deepdale or an Alan Shearer stand at Turf Moor.
This could only happen at Latics. At a time when we are finally not the underdogs in our part of Lancashire. When we were the underdogs that vermin club would have gladly and arrogantly ground us in to the ground. Get out of that stand now and remember the insults and mockery. Never forget and let them know on any occasion that we are top dogs now.
Actually the Wigan cycling club stand has quite a nice ring to it.why should i consider moving from a seat where i have had for years, with a good view and good people around me just because it is called the b….. or whatever get real and sort your life out.

Bob, to some people folowing a team means more than getting a good view of the game, when you you have bean there from the days of matlock, frickley and the likes, being the best none league team in the country year after year but constantly being voted against in the elections to gain entry to the football league.
when you stuck by youre club with a couple of thousand other TRUE suppoters at the bottom of the football league with Kenny Swain as manager, When you chucked youre change into buckets to pay players wages, when you are staring bankruptcy right in the face and you still have the loyalty and passion to stand by them when the rest of the towns football fans ‘support’ yoonited,Liverpool,Blackburn. Then we get what at the time was arguably the biggest game of our history at the time against leads united in the latter stages of the FA cup and ask the local RL club for a bit of help, They basically tell us to get f….d. Then when we reach the freight rover final Maurice lyndsey decides to mock us on national TV instead of being humble it quite rightly p….s theese people off, not to mention the ribbing we used to take for supporting a s..t little club when the rugby (being the only profesional club) Were going to wemberley every year, and boy did they let us Know about it. Now to have a stand in OUR stadium named after one of there legends with Lyndsey on the board is unbelievable, but to be told to grow up by new followers of the club who dont have a clue what it was like in them days and dont know what it means to truely support a club p….s theese people off, you nead to understand. end of rant20 August 2009 at 4:01 pm #5811Or what ever its name is.
