When you play a 4-4-2 formation you should consider strikers in the starting lineup !! :silly:

Let’s hope he learns from this mistake then because most managers prefer to start games with at least one striker on the pitch ! The very fact that this has happened twice now, albeit momentarily last week, is a bit of a concern to me!
13 December 2014 at 10:01 pm #136857As I stated recently I can only presume Malky doesn’t see anything in our strikers so he may well be counting the days till he can do some serious business in the window.Delort scores in development games but doesn’t get a start,so where’s the incentive ?I’m stunned that usually a new manager seems to see an immediate improvement but in our case we’ve actually got worse.
13 December 2014 at 11:09 pm #136864He must have his reasons. He is employed to do these things. Bloody strange though because Both McClean and Espinoza don’t exactly set the world alight as midfielders never mind strikers! it sounds though that yet again it was sloppy defending that was the main problem.
13 December 2014 at 11:11 pm #136865There is no fundamental problem with starting without a known striker – it’s called a “false 9” formation where the midfielders take it in turns through the game to act as striker, which provides the advantage of the defenders not knowing who to mark at any given play.
Our problem is that we don’t appear to have the quality of midfielders to take on that role.

I can’t think of many sides who adopt this ‘false 9’ tactic! Can you name any sides that used it today? If a side has injury problems to the point where they would be forced into it then I can understand that but otherwise no!
You can pick from all 4 divisions if you like, I will check back later to see how popular this enigmatic formation is! ;)13 December 2014 at 11:57 pm #136878I’ve no idea if anyone used it today as I didn’t watch every game in the League, wouldn’t trust reporters to get the date correct, and certainly (even if I did trust them) have no intention of wasting my time looking through every lineup for every game trying to identify every player in every team to see if he is a striker.
All I am saying is that playing without a named striker is not totally unknown in modern football. Whether it was done elsewhere today I haven’t got the foggiest, and to be honest, if it had worked would have been innovative and bold.

If it had worked, it would have been lucky! Roberts and Ellington seem a very distant memory right now! Have a good night, I am off to watch a punk band, laters! :)
14 December 2014 at 1:36 am #136886Cant wait till we use a false no 1 and the outfield players take turns to be in goal what a load of shite

And how would you know this if you don’t play them from the start ?, doesn’t a new manager mean a level playing field for all ? fresh start. There are lots of players who don’t light up the training pitch but prefer a competitive match to show their worth. Delort has had roughly 7 minutes of play under MacKay and Reira ?.
I personally think this has nothing to do with the player himself but more to do with money and bonuses/appearances etc. All will be revealed in the Jan window were at least 4-6 players will be gone and one or two unlikely faces as well.We should stop going on about the 1-2-3 or even none upfront debate, what about the defence ?? we’ve scored in 6 in our last 8 games but failed to keep a clean sheet in only 2. Some of the goals conceded would have been avoided over at Laithwaite park on a Saturday or a Sunday
14 December 2014 at 3:30 pm #136894Have a good night, I am off to watch a punk band, laters! :)So, you’re 40 years out of date with your musical tastes as well as your football strategies, I see? ;)
14 December 2014 at 4:08 pm #136895Liverpool could use same formation today if talk shoite are to be believed, anyway my gripe with it would be that to more extent you are asking players to play out of position and is that a wise move given our current plight?. I would ask the question is now the time to experiment?. Did Malky set up not to lose the game?. Yes our forwards are not up to scratch but surely it would be better to throw the kids in and try to keep some kind of shape especially against a Watford side who with Deeney in the side are going to score goals. I hope we are not banking on the transfer window because I do not see quality players queueing up to join a relegation scrap and if our business is done at the end of Jan then a lot of games will pass and lots of points lost and we simply cannot afford to chance it. I don’t envy Malky’s task but I sure hope he makes it.
14 December 2014 at 7:19 pm #136896This has all been one almighty fck up, since the appointment culminating in that shite line up yesterday.
Never has a manager done so little in his first 4 games after replacing a sacked manager. Liverpool have just got walloped doing the same. It’s desperate.
This is a dark time.

I think the manager can make a good enough judgement about players he sees day in and day out on the training pitch. And, either way, it’s his choice.
As for the paragraph after that about money and bonuses, that’s some imagination you’ve got going on there.
