Well this makes me feel old and I struggle to recall but I can recollect going to Darwen in the early sixties as a very young boy. It must have been a Lancashire Junior Cup game as the mighty Blues were then in the Cheshire County League playing league fixtures against Stockport County, Chester City and Tranmere Rovers Reserve sides plus Alty, Macc and Stafford Rangers. I defo remember the special train to Doncaster Rovers in the cup and the amazing replay played on a mid week afternoon at Springy.
To think how pissed off the County fans must be now ,not even in the conference!!

I’d been to a fair few away grounds in my youth with my dad watching United & I think my first away game would have been for a the derby at Maine Road in the Platt Lane End at some point in the early 80’s

As a Latics fan (1987 onwards) my first away game was the 2nd leg of the 1st round of the Littlewoods Cup in 1987. Went in the home end with my mate & his dad who were Bolton fans & I think only my youth (I was 12) stopped me getting a kicking as a celebrated Bobbby Campbell’s third on the fence at the front of the Burnden Terrace

I think my first ever away game was the FA cup match against northwich victoria in 1978 (my first season as well watching latics) with that infamous incident involving the policeman with the dart in his face. As a small 6 year old i couldn’t see the incident – just had to rely on the information from one of my dads mates.

December 1980 – Crewe Alexandra. I had put a golf ball through a neighbour’s window, seemed like a good place to go and hide, we won 2-1. Came back to face the punishment for my poor golf swing :(
