Awaits someone saying it was Goole along with some anecdote about the Goole ‘Gooligans’!

You’d have thought so but no, first away game was Hyde United at Ewen Fields, Cheshire League, 1967-68. Not to be confused with Hyde Rangers (Hydrangeas ged it!)

    Oh, please yourselves.

BTW, the referee was Kevin McNally who progressed to referee in the first division 1972-1981. Hyde United no longer exist. Can’t remember what happened to Wigan Athletic.

                    FA Cup, Newcastle away, 1954.
No, I didn’t, but my father did.

Probably Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup in 1966. I remember the crush leaving the ground when I was lifted off the floor and carried bodily for a few yards. A very scary experience at the time.

Wigan Borough folded & ceased to exist. Wigan Athletic are a separate club

Hyde United changed their name as it was a condition of them getting a wedge of money of Manchester City to allow their reserves to play there (City insisted they drop the United bit). They also insisted that they stop playing in red and get rid of all the red in their ground (seats, stands, crush barriers) – apparently the away fans regularly chant “You sold your soul for cash” at them.
Think the money must have run out coz they’re doing awful now

Anyway not really comparable to Wigan Borough/ Wijgan Athletic

I read once that one of Hyde’s keepers whose surname was Bunyan had to retire due to lumbago! ;)

Mark Neale who scored Telford’s winner lived near me in Nuneaton. We became friends after he saw me wearing my Latics top. Mark was a stalwart of Midlands non-league football and had spells at Nuneaton Boro and Atherstone United. That result haunted me for ages.

Fulham away 21st February 1998. I seem to remember Roy Carroll getting a yellow card for arguing with the referee. There were a few hundred Latics fans there but I went to same fixture in the following season. There were a lot more Latics fans there and I was asked by a couple of German tourists who were in the away end if it was a local derby!
