From the Village of the Damned – Rainford. The only real way out was the train – to watch Liverpool/Everton one week, Wigan the next. In those days there was never a ticket inspector so it was free to get there. That was nearly 30 years ago. As we got older, used to go to the Pier, Maxines, the Bull etc so felt more of an affinity with Wigan, than St Helens where Rainford is.

Is Stephen Fishwick still Lord of Rainford?
Sorry – never heard of him. Is he some Mr big peddling sleeping pills to the old folk?

It’s good to see that the people who support Latics from outside of Wigan actually bother to watch us and support us as opposed to just being pub fans like the majority of say Liverpool/Man Utd fans from London or elsewhere.

I bet there aren’t too many clubs our size who have fans that travel such a distance to watch a home game.

I want to hear Donnelly’s story to see if he tells it himself or copies and pastes it.

          Now Now don’t be mean!

          Live in/from USA (Milwaukee).

Didn’t really start following the sport at all until the ’94 World Cup, and then started following the EPL because I loved the review show (on Sky/Fox here) – a great/interesting recap -I think every professional league sport should have a similar show. Started tuning into the games (early Sat/Sun mornings here) & got hooked. I generally don’t like rooting for the big/dynasty teams, so rooted for Newcastle originally, or the underdogs and/or teams with American players (there are a lot of Fulham fans in the States due to McBride/Bocanegra/Dempsey). Decided I would pick one team the year Wigan came up. Saw a replay of that first game against Chelsea & pretty much was locked in only rooting for them a few weeks later. A little tougher to get news/info & see all of the games where I’m at. Web search led me to this site – which has cemented me as even more of a fan. Hoping to make it to a game at some point – or for Wigan to do a pre-season exhibtion tour in the US a la ManU

I think you’ll be waiting a while for that to happen unless you can sell the Wigan Athletic name. Welcome aboard.

Are there many like me who have no real connection to the town?

When I was a wee nipper my sister who is older than me started seeing a wiganer who took me to a few games at Springfield Park.

The first I think was Fulham which was Keegan’s first match in charge of them.

Despite getting elbowed in the head and nearly knocked unconcious when we scored I fell in love with the team.

The only information I could get my hands on back then was a small snippet in the Manchester Evening News…

So I had to get creative and probably used Championship Manager as my main source of knowledge for the team and players coupled with buying the Cockney Latic fanzine from a sports memrobilia shop in Manchester City Centre.

Despite being born a Man U fan I have never looked back since.

I still have a soft spot for them but that turns to burning hatred when they do things like put a shit team out against West Ham on the last day of the season when we stayed up V Sheffield Utd or Potenitally fuck up our European hopes by going out of the cup V Chelsea.

There are thousands of kids like me round Manchester who I am sure if taken to a Wigan game would fall in love just like I did.

How you convince their parents who cant even be arsed to go watch their own teams to take them though is another problem in itself.

Why have they fucked up our European chances by getting beat by Chelsea ?
“potentially” as Chelsea could get to the final V us and drop out of the qualifying spots in the league…

If it was Utd V City we would be (within reason) guaranteed qualification as runner up.
don’t wish to put a spanner in the works or count chickens etc., but since semi-fimal draw was made (and before Utd went out), i’ve gone all along with a WIGAN / CITY final

              sticking to that.

              come on Latics !!

I was away from Wigan 27 yrs runcorn but i have never been anything else but a Wiganer even keeping my broad accent. If anyone asked me where i lived my reply was always “I live in Nuneaton but im a Wigan lad”.When I returned 27 yrs later it seemed that every 2nd voice I heard was Scouce.Once a Wiganer always a Wiganer. As for the Latics well my old man was an egg who never set foot on a football ground so our insurance man at the time knowing I was mad about football took me to see Liverpool v City at Anfield and i remember the game but it didnt grab me and turn me into a fan of either of them.Shortly after a few of us went to watch a little club club called Wigan play another little club called Burscough and I became immediately hooked with the Latics. The rest is history.

Grew up in old part of Skem, mum an old Skemmer, dad a pie eater from Shevvy.

Surrounded by Liverpool and Everton fans at school, in a football obsessed town. Was taken by my dad to Skem United a bit when I was really young. In 1986 I pestered to be taken to a ‘proper match’ and Latics were playing Wolves in the last game of the season. I was actually more attracted to Wolves, as I collected Paninni football stickers and their Wolves head badge caught my eye. Plus, first kit I ever had was a Wolves kit.

So we went to the game, Latics won 5-3, and we started going every week the following season. Had a season ticket since.

Nuneaton, was that the Cup game away at Burscough when, with so many Latic fans packed in at the back of the goal the fence collapsed and the Latics fans all spilled onto the pitch.
