Are there many like me who have no real connection to the town?

When I was a wee nipper my sister who is older than me started seeing a wiganer who took me to a few games at Springfield Park.

The first I think was Fulham which was Keegan’s first match in charge of them.

Despite getting elbowed in the head and nearly knocked unconcious when we scored I fell in love with the team.

The only information I could get my hands on back then was a small snippet in the Manchester Evening News…

So I had to get creative and probably used Championship Manager as my main source of knowledge for the team and players coupled with buying the Cockney Latic fanzine from a sports memrobilia shop in Manchester City Centre.

Despite being born a Man U fan I have never looked back since.

I still have a soft spot for them but that turns to burning hatred when they do things like put a shit team out against West Ham on the last day of the season when we stayed up V Sheffield Utd or Potenitally fuck up our European hopes by going out of the cup V Chelsea.

There are thousands of kids like me round Manchester who I am sure if taken to a Wigan game would fall in love just like I did.

How you convince their parents who cant even be arsed to go watch their own teams to take them though is another problem in itself.

Why have they fucked up our European chances by getting beat by Chelsea ?

I was born and raised in Liverpool and was brought up a Red. Had a Kop season ticket, went to away games regularly, was in Rome when the first European Cup was won in 1977.

We moved out to Garswood around that time and with one thing and another went only rarely back to Anfield. Went to a few Latics games for something to do on a Saturday – was at Goodison in 1980 for example.

When my son started to be of an age to watch football regularly (even though for Xmas and so on he got Liverpool kits as presents) it was difficult to take him to Anfield, so as they say, we supported our local team. We went more and more regularly until we were no longer missing games.

My son started selling programmes, my duaghter was a ball-girl, and I started stewarding. Over the years thoughts of Liverpool drifted away, but the Universes were never supposed to collide.

I knew the transformation was complete though when, in the first season in the Premier League, I was interviewed by Sky Sports outside the away Anfield Road end, wearing blue and white, and talking about “our” chances against Liverpool.

The Liverpool I used to support is dead anyway – it’s no longer the same club, and I haven’t ever for one moment regretted supporting what is now my local team.

“potentially” as Chelsea could get to the final V us and drop out of the qualifying spots in the league…

If it was Utd V City we would be (within reason) guaranteed qualification as runner up.

From the Village of the Damned – Rainford. The only real way out was the train – to watch Liverpool/Everton one week, Wigan the next. In those days there was never a ticket inspector so it was free to get there. That was nearly 30 years ago. As we got older, used to go to the Pier, Maxines, the Bull etc so felt more of an affinity with Wigan, than St Helens where Rainford is.

Is Stephen Fishwick still Lord of Rainford?

              a) Clonmel, Co Tipperary, Ireland.

              b) Around 1977 a school friend of mine was looking for a team to support. I suggested that rather follow one of the top sides he could support the next team that got elected into the English league which happened to be Wimbledon. He seemed to have great fun with this novel approach supporting his new team in their first year. Out of curiosity (i was a man u fan) I decided to keep an eye on the results of the next team that got elected and that happened to be Wigan in 1978. To be honest what started as a curiosity at first developed into a bit of a love affair over the years. Then around 2000/01 my sister got a job in Liverpool. One weekend I went over for a visit and popped up to see my first Wigan game (a 2-1 win over Northampton with goals from Haworth and Liddel). They were in the third tier then with Bruce Rioch as manager. Since 2000 I go over about 2/3 times a year

Interesting to hear how people from outside Wigan started following Wigan.

I grew up and still live in Ashton, so this thread isn’t for me but I may as well tell my tale. My family are all Everton fans and as a kid I supported Everton. My youth team were offered tickets to go and watch Wigan Athletic for free and most of the team went. Me and 2 others thought it was brilliant watching football as we had never really done so. So we started going every home game around 2001 when it was £1 for us kids. After a while I realised I stopped caring when Everton won or lost but the Wiagn result mattered a whole lot to me. Not looked back since.

I’m from Cambridge, My friend has randomly and I mean very randomly supported Wigan for about 7 years but never really made it to any games as he was the only one, so me and another friend decided to adopt Wigan as our premier league club, I still go to alot of Cambridge United games,as I get in for free but i’d choose going to a Wigan game then Cambridge most days

And this is how we will grow our support, and in fact HAVE grown our support. A factor that most pundits/lazy journos etc fail to see – a lot of us started out not by going to Goole Town in 1825, but by moving away from the boredom of the bigger names that surround us.
