It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to lose Alcaraz, he’s hit and miss for me and if Ramis can perform this season, he may find himself down the pecking order. Boselli still has stuff to prove this season, it’s too early to be worried about him. Figs has been at the club for ages, but yes, we should be getting a decent fee from him and di Santo would be a real shame except that I just can’t see him wanting to leave on a free. He seems to fit at Wigan, he’s getting a run in the team, he’s on form and his link up play with Kone has been superb this season, I can’t see why he would want to leave at the end of this season.

Don’t forget – every club is in this situation. They all have good players coming to their end of their contracts and there’s every possibility that they may leave. It’s Bobby’s job to make sure we aren’t lacking next season and I don’t think we will be.

As for Martinez leaving, if he does, fair play to him. He has been one of the most loyal servants for Wigan, players and managers, and he deserves a chance with a really big club. I would be very surprised if he left Wigan in a mess though i.e. all our best players leaving and no replacements, he loves it too much! :)

I don’t think we need to be worried about being victims of our own success, although it’s nice to feel we can worry about things like that for a change!!

I agree RM has put together a strong squad this year and the NF game proved that. I just think timing is key for subs and would like to see measures to prevent goals rather than reacting after one has gone in.

        Absolutely. Good post!

OK fair enough about FM, I’ve only played a bit myself and I’m crap, there’s just a lot people who think they could be managers because they’re not bad on computer games!

But I still think you’re way too harsh on those kinds of players, you can’t fault Gomez so far this season. He doesn’t spend his life backwards, he’s just a player who passes it about, makes space and creates chances. There’s a reason he’s not in the first 11 but that doesn’t mean him and Watson and Stam, who I really rate are bad players. Stam is by far one of the better crossers in our squad, Watson has composure in midfield (although I accept his set-pieces are awful) and overall I think that, yeah, we do have good cover in our squad, certainly better than in recent years that is!

While I do agree that at times, Bobby’s substitutions last season seemed a bit odd, I also agree that he knows the squad better than anyone, working with them day in and out. With regards to the Jones for Beausejour sub, that was the right move for the players that were on the bench. Personally, I would have preferred a player like Stam to come in, who does have defensive capabilities and a good extra attacking option, but he wasn’t on the bench.

I think that this season we have really strengthened all areas of the squad (with the exception of GK, I wouldn’t fancy Polly for a long stint). I think that I wouldn’t be too worried about subs, injuries, suspensions etc because we have excellent depth in the squad with the likes of Watson, Gomez, Boselli, Stam who don’t get into the first 11 but are excellent cover. With regards to Bobby’s subs, at times they are odd, but for the large part, he does OK. He has to find the balance between killing games off, allowing tired legs to get a rest and to give younger players a start at times and I think he does this well. Many people were calling for young Callum to come on in the Stoke game but would that have been the right option? Ryo gave us an added flair and speed and he’s largely unproven so he’s got something to show.

I think you need to give Bobby more credit for his subs than before. Also, remember that Beausejour was injured, it wasn’t a tactical sub but a necessity. Also, Mitty, are you for real? Why do you think Jewell commented about fans who spend too much time on FM?

Thanks for the advice, but I think I can cope though. I’ve been following this messageboard for years just never bothered to sign up!

He was a real trier in the Premier League and always gave us 110%. Unfortunately with di Santo and Rodallega and now Kone, he just has never had a proper run in the team. I would have loved to see him do well for us but he’s probably not Prem standard, I hope he does really well for Derby!

I have to disagree with those who are pulling out negatives from that game, I thought we were immense. So far in the four games this season, with the exception of the first 6 minutes against Chelsea, we have looked sharp and dangerous, like a really well-drilled mid-table club on the upwards, which is exactly what we are looking for at Wigan.

Yes, we probably should have won the game with the amount of possession we had and the way Stoke played but I came away from watching the game applauding the rhythm and movement and flair of ‘little Wigan’. Kone and di Santo linked up fabulously, I can see a great strike partnership blossoming there. Maloney was pivotal to that attack, MacCarthur pulled the strings and drove the midfield, Figs and Jones played well in wing-back role as they always do and defensively, for once we looked coherent and strong. Ramis looks an excellent signing while Caldwell and Boyce continue to get the job done. Ali is a legend, always. But what was so fantastic was that we actually played as a team; the passing, the movement, it was so fluid, so crisp, so Martinez-esque, it was a joy to watch!

Yes, we should have won and maybe it can be considered 2 points dropped but seriously, if we continue to play like that this season, we will be absolutely no-where near the bottom.

                  Roll on United!!
