Would anyone really argue that before the subs it wasn’t crap? There were chances but it was still a negative set up and crap to watch. Without the changes to the team and the tempo we would have undoubtedly lost the game.

If we’d scored the chances which in fact were an easy header from a corner and a shot outside the box as I remember, I’m sure Gills would have come out of their 2nd gear and created more. I’m sure they hit the post and scored from 2 efforts.

Got to let teams worry about us more.

I agree about the tempo and urgency, but that always increases when 2-0 down at home, you have to push on and take the risk of being done on the break. Remember Dack going through one on one with the keeper and he luckily for us ballsed it up by taking an extra touch.

Watch the video of the game as I did and you will see a shot from Pearce 2 yards out with the defender wrong side of him and he it it straight at the goalie, it was a bigger blooper than the Kellett header. Then watch the diving header from Jacobs I think, when 8 yards out and not marked at all and he nearly hit the corner flag, then watch the Daniels shot from 10 yards out that he screwed wide of the post, there are more believe me, I’m not just making things up to win an argument it all happened.
The problem we had was the fact that we were 1-0 down at HT and that is the thing that gets fans negative and gloomy in the warmth of the concourse.
At 96 mins we are all coming off the ground on a high, so much so I watched the full game again when the missus went to bed.
I will take whatever formation GC wants to put out whether it be 3-4-2-1, 4-4-2, or 3-4-3, that is not the biggest problem for me, its all about tempo, being a bit quicker to get the ball forward and even more importantly and w2hat people have forgot about, defending properly. If we had lost the game 2-0 this thread would have been about Daniel’s piss poor defending for their second goal and the lack of awareness and pace Pearce showed for their first.

Ok JR stats in their simplest form……1 striker 55mins 0 goals .2 strikers 35 mins 3 goals.

Your missing the point completely and now trying to put a nonsense argument forward and getting a thank you from Victor Meldrew.

Lets say 1 striker, 55 mins 0 goals, a goalie howler and 6 strikers 3 goals

Then lets say 1 striker 55 mins no goals, 35 mins during which 6 subs introduced, 3 goals

Then lets say 1 striker 55 mins no goals, their left back suffering with cramp last 10 mins, 2 goals.

Then lets say 1 striker playing towards the away fans 0 goals, 45 mins playing towards our own fans 3 goals.

I could go on and fekin on…

Just accept the facts and the reasons why things changed, nothing at all to do with 1 up front or 2 up front. All football matches start with teams lining up in a formation, but as the game develops it chops and changes depending on a multitude of variables. It may be one of the opposing players causing problems in a certain position, so they change to man mark, all these things crop up.

You and Donny thought we was a negative and generally crap first half not creating many chances playing one up front. I’ve put my argument forward to show and prove we did create chances and with the same luck that we had in the second half and the same clinical finishing, we would and should have been at least 3-1 up.

If you can’t comprehend that, then get ready to have another big fekin moan next Tuesday, Will Grigg if fit, will play the loan striker role again and the likes of Jacobs, Kellett, Power, Daniels and even Yanick if he signs, will have plenty of scoring opportunities, just like they did last night over the full 90 mins. :cheer:

Just seen the stats, 8 attempts at goal in the first half from Wigan, then we had the 2 or 3 crosses that we just failed to get on the end of. I think that gave us a good scoring opportunity every 4-5 mins.
So playing one up front is negative, don’t think so, not when you have the best forward in this division being the lone striker. Another master class from Will and a goal to make it even sweeter. :cheer:

PS 12 attempts by Wigan in the 90 mins, so let me see…….that’s 4 in the second half. You need to give your heads a big fekin wobble some of you.

And at half time I said there was time to turn it round. We continued in the same horrible way with The Gills taking it to us and they went two up deservedly. Almost making it three or four. Then the masterstroke and we took it to them. More pace, more urgency, more forward passing. Hiwula drawing players and McCann pushing forward.
What next v Sheffield ?
First half football or second?
By the way well done Gary for thirty five or so minutes.

Poor 1st half.Should have ,would have !!! Fact is 1 up front leaves Grigg constantly running himself ragged with zero reward. We need to let the opposition worry about us.”The only difference is we rode our luck “..seriously ? and not the substitutions gave more support for Grigg and a faster tempo.Nothing like the 1st half at all.

So Power’s goal was due to us having 2 up front??

It was always going to be gung ho for the last 10 mins with 5- 6 up front. The formation in the first or second half had fek all to do with that result in my opinion and nobody will convince me otherwise.

Same old tired boring shit. Players out of position all over the park. It’s cold.
Paul jewel is here. How he must be thinking in the back of his head ‘What sort of football is this’ Haworth Barlow Liddle. Roberts Ellington McCulloch. The Wigan way.
Still there’s a second half to come and there’s time to turn this round!!

I’ll say it again, we created loads of chances with that formation, probably more than we’ve done all season. I think I must have been watching a different match than some on here, lets look at the stats when they come out.

Premature ejaculation Donny. :P

45 mins effing wasted at home with his stubborn insistence with lone striker. Grigg nil service and he deserved better.Dack free kick could have seen them out of sight. For Christ sake how many 1st halves do we have to waste? How many 2 goal behind fight backs ? No tempo, over passing yet swaps it round 2nd half and we were a million times better.Stop playing away formations at home.Great credit to the players for a fantastic come back but our formations put them constantly in a position of chasing the game.Start with 2 strikers at home and leave it at that.

I’m sorry Dereke but we could and should have been 3-1 up in the first half. They had the goal and the free kick that was it no other efforts, we had a the Kellett header miss from half a yard, the Pearce effort 2 yards out hit straight at the goalie, the Jacobs strike that the goalie saved with his finger nails and numerous crosses across the box that didn’t quite fall for us. I thought Grigg again played the lone striker superbly and created several opportunities for the roaming jacobs and Kellett.

Nothing wrong with that system he played in the first half and much of the second, the only difference late on was we put the chances away and rode our luck for the Power goal and maybe the Jacobs knock back for Grigg , it was unbelievable if he didn’t take a ride on the defenders back.

One post, one moan FFS!

Caldwell said he was going to keep a winning side but of late he’s been making plenty changes which as we know from previous seasons doesn’t seem to work.

“Of late” he kept the same team at Fleetwood that won at Barnsley. I would have kept the same team again if all the players were fully fit, however, I can understand why he made some changes. The players who came on at Fleetwood helped win the game, apart from Hiwula the other two subs who made the impact started yesterday. Chris McCann at left back proved a big mistake in my opinion, the lad who scored for them was unmarked at the far post. If James is fully fit, he should be the first name on the team sheet for me.
Perhaps GC should have made even more changes and played all 3 subs that came on at Fleetwood, he’s on a no win situation here.

Against Blackpool everyone of our players where rubbish and the conditions wasn’t for yanics game

They were nightmare conditions for defenders, he did not get past White once.

What other players do is irrelevant, he had a job to do and didn’t do it. I love the guy when he is in full flow, but over 90 mins, Perkins is a more productive player. A good chase back and tackle never gets the plaudits but contributes to a result just as much as a sprint down the wing and cross into the oppo’s box.

I would like to see him stay, I would also like him to get match fit so he can contribute going back to his own goal as well as going forward.

Still an impact player for me and can see the reason why he can’t hold a regular place in the Boro team, playing against better opposition.

We don’t discuss this enough. Instead some prefer to talk about how badly a previous manager who actually won the thing is doing at another club.
So as yours, the record will continue to play as long I or anyone else, wants to play it. If you don’t want to continue the discussions, butt out, its as easy as that. ;)
So it would appear but I’m not the one that keeps bringing up the Martinez topic and boring us all to death. As for butting out you need to be reminded occasionally how pathetic this stalking of a former manager really is, almost as pathetic as trying to argue that despite the town experiencing the worst flooding in decades over a holiday weekend with the emergency services flat out you think arrangements should have been made to ensure a football match takes place.

Or was it a wind-up!
Boring us all to death eh, there’s quite a few fans dislike him due to the way he left our club. Stalking is a bit over the top, I would have not brought this subject up if the latest poster hadn’t.
Can I suggest all you Martinez lovers leave this thread to those who don’t want to be half way up his arris. Honestly, I for one won’t give a shiny shyte if you started your own dedicated “love in” thread in honour of him. So without having to repeat myself again, “no likey, don’t bitey” :P

It was not a 9 booking game, you are just arguing for arguments sake, as you often do. That still leaves 6 bad decisions and the many other gaffs he made for both teams. They had about 10 free kicks in the first 5 minutes, that set the tone for the game, hence all the bookings. He couldn’t keep up with play and over ruled the linesman’s decisions on a number of occasion to the bemusement of the players and fans.
