Before the game I was thinking, put the effort in and we should win this game; then take a point at Oxford, and then I’ll make the trip to Shrewsbury. Now I’m disillusioned and determined not to waste my money next week. As a lifelong loyal fan, I now don’t want to listen to the long list of excuses. It really is quite simple: we have a better than average squad of players for this division, but it is the Managers game strategy and tactics that is our undoing !
We seem same to say the same things every week, ie.

Free kick in the attacking half of the pitch and we choose to pass back towards our own goal
Free kick on the left wing, probably 25 yds from the penalty spot and we take a quick short pass and end up losing the ball without creating any threat (the foul on Humphreys with about 5 mins to go).
Throw in, about 10 yards into the attacking half and we throw towards our own half with the ball ending up with Charlie Hughes on the edge of our 18 yd box.

Oh and don’t forget the excuse that the opposition put every player behind the ball !!!
Well, there’s a surprise that we knew would happen before the season even kicked off and it would be the majority of the visiting teams to the DW that would adopt that strategy. But have we figured out how to best combat that tactic ? I leave you to answer the obvious.

Maybe I’ll calm down before KO on Tuesday.

Yes that training ground stunt, smacks of a brown envelope in the car park.
We were taken to the cleaners and it wouldn’t stand up to scrutiny if investigated :negative:

    Ref was the normal garbage.
Matt Smith was punished for the type of foul that we see in every game, that usually goes un-punished
And where was the offside flag for their second goal

Anyway, good win by the Latics and two fingers to the establishment :yahoo:

The script from Preston claimed that Tickle would be a good signing to “bolster the ranks”; so I can’t imagine him walking into the first team !!!

    Signed for Pompey !

Good luck Callum and thank you for the goals and endless effort. You’ll always be a true Tic :good: :good: :good:

Well Ll4e, that has got to rank as the worst ever Latics first half performances that I have witnessed in the last 60+ seasons

Second half was marginally better and it was only when we were in the last chance saloon that our pass sideways and back “free kick” strategy was abandoned in favour of a teasing ball into the opposition’s box, with the danger resulting in a memorable goal. Wycombe’s best chance also came from a long range free kick delivered into the danger area.

Anyway, prediction for Saturday against a strong Stevenage side: If we try and sit back for the majority of the game, we’ll get battered.

    That short corner was diabolical.
I beggars belief when we had four tall players in their box awaiting a good delivery.
I’d like to see our stats from this season, to compare goals from direct corners Vs goals from tippy tappy short corners :mail:

    Quite depressing in reality.
We’ll probably sell our young crown jewels in another sale of the century

Agree with all that’s been said on this game.
Imagine if we were managed by Toure, Joyce, etc; the fans would be baying for the Manager’s head long before now. It’s only the fact that SM is a Latics legend and the sentimental umbilical cord is proving difficult to cut, that is saving him. Would love SM to prove us wrong, but he’s not learning from these increasingly frequent Jekyll & Hyde performances. I don’t accept the small squad / young players excuses anymore. We’ve had enough quality in the squad to turn losses into draws and draws into wins. Doncaster is a prime example: no standout players and a Manager that a lot of people don’t like, and they make us look like the 2 Division side.
SM needs to redeem himself, starting with the next three games :bye: :bye: :bye:

Correct CW, Bobby Brown shoes did make that comment about a goal from a free kick. Just can’t think which game it was, nor which player scored the goal. I do remember the goal being an absolute stunner, leaping out of my seat and bashing my shins on the seat in front as I came down to earth.

SM did say yesterday that Langy had a minor calf problem. Fake or fact ???

Short corners are okay, if we penetrate the box within two passes; but some games we pass about six or seven times, ending up back on the halfway line and the all of the opposition players out of their box.
We were only ever effective at short corners when Andy Liddell was in the team !

    Agree with CW & Dirk:
The passing backwards is becoming a pandemic, and I’ll never understand short corners or free kicks when we need to get the ball into the box and create panic & danger; and we are bloody losing !

    in reply to: Reading #201859

Aye, and next Saturday when Reading fans invade the DW pitch we will get docked points for not having sufficient crowd control in place ! You can bet on it !

    in reply to: UTD…. #201835

I agree VAT69, and if we sell our crown jewels and don’t re-invest; or worse still sell for a pittance, then I might finally throw in the towel. Gave the new ownership the benefit of the doubt this season, but next season will be the “season of truth” as we see the what strategy and level of commitment is unveiled.

Sadly it doesn’t feel optimistic. No smoke without fire, but can’t even see the smoke !!!

I’ll be another decision that ends up biting us on the Arse !!!!!!
