I wonder how many people around the globe had heard of Wigan Athletic before last May despite us being in the P L for 8 seasons. The whole planet watches the Cup and our little club and our amazing triumph was the topic of conversation of football fans from every Continent even if only for a short while. That’s why to me it has to be the Cup.
I think you are underestimating how much being in the Premier League put us on the map, but I accept that the FA Cup win did it even more!
Promotions & relegations come & go but you can never ever take away a cup win.
Correct. But the point was that people HAD heard of us previously because we were in the PL. Even if hearing of us only as opponents of United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal etc.
4 for me and I know of at least 10 others, so we must approaching a whole 200 at least! Going to be a nightmare getting to the bar.I believe they’re going to get in a student to help out at the bar, so shouldn’t be too bad
I reckon we might get as high as 150, if we get a few sales at the match on Saturday.
I once devised a whole team, all in correct positions starting with David Seaman in goal and ranging through Julian Dicks, Alan Ball, Stefan Kuntz, Andrei Arshavin and so on.
Wish I could remember them all.
You can’t have both! But the point is, we can…..
Tue 29 Oct 2002 (7.45) at JJB Stadium (6,241) *Div 2*
WIGAN ATHLETIC 1 QUEENS PARK RANGERS 1 HT 1-1
Wigan: Filan; Eaden, De Vos, Jackson, McMillan, Liddell(1), Dinning, McCulloch, Roberts, Ellington
QPR: Royce; Shittu, Carlisle, Palmer, Forbes, Rose, Langley, Connolly(Thomas), Williams, Oli, Thomson(1)
Referee: E Ilderton (Tyne & Wear)Eddie Ilderton. Now there’s a name from the memory banks. He started his league career quite young and I remember him refereeing us against QPR in 2002 when he got basically everything wrong.
My role in this is that I used to escort the referees off the pitch, and I had to physically hold back Paul Jewell who was going berserk.
What was funny was a year or so later Paul Jewell before a game collared Mark Clattenburg with “did you referee us a year back?”, thinking he was Ilderton (both are from the North East).
My wish 3-2 ( With a last kick of the game winner to bring the house down ! ) :cheer:Jordi Gomez penalty :)
Make that 26 – the numbers are building.
Anything that hits the back of the net is a good goal but the City pen was a poor penalty for me , you hit it hard and right in any of the four corners and if the keeper saves it hats of to him , that’s my preference .
The duke used to roll them in can’t remember any misses, to be fair holt Watson and Gomez have all succeeded until the last two, think Ali has saved more than that too.
Sir Andrew of lidl never missed many with his little run up & shimmy !
Maybe he faced poorer keepers?
Have you tried ringing Bolton ground u never knowUsing what? ;)
Can’t believe what I’m reading here.
At the City game all the commentators were saying “that’s how to take a penalty – calm and collected – brilliant”.
And now he has once again become the target of negative comments because of a fine save by a keeper – it’s not as though he ballooned it over the bar.
Sheesh”
