The phrase most likely originated from The Derby, a horse race in England, founded by the 12th Earl of Derby in 1780, since at least as early as 1840 ‘derby’ has been used as a noun in English to denote any kind of sporting contest.
Another widely reported theory, though not accepted by the Oxford English Dictionary, is that the phrase came about from the city of Derby itself.[citation needed] It was renowned as the site of a chaotic and exuberant game that involved the whole town and often resulted in fatalities. The goals were at Nuns Mill in the north and the Gallows Balk in the south of the town, and much of the action took place in the Derwent river or Markeaton brook. Nominally the players came from All Saints’ and St Peter’s parishes, but in practice the game was a free-for-all with as many as 1,000 players. A Frenchman who observed the match in 1829 wrote in horror, ‘if Englishmen call this play, it would be impossible to say what they call fighting’. The traditional Shrovetide football match is commonplace in the town of Ashbourne, Derbyshire.”[1]

There be one in Scotland that sounds like two hat
UWE Rosler has spoken of his delight at being able to call on the services of in-form Latics winger James McClean at Bolton tonight.
The televised clash at the Macron Stadium will see both sides sporting poppies on the front of their shirts to commemorate Remembrance Sunday this weekend.
In the past, McClean – who was brought up on the Creggan Estate in Derry – has elected not to wear a poppy-emblazoned shirt.
But Rosler says the 25-year-old will definitely be part of his plans for a massive game at the foot of the Championship.
“Of course he will be involved, I can categorically say he is in the 18-man squad,” the Wigan boss said.
“There has been a talk between the player and the chairman and they came to a compromise that both parties are very happy with.
“I am a football coach, I am a manager who selects the players who are available and James McClean is available.
“We have to respect all views. For me, the most important thing is that I don’t lose a player for issues with nothing to do with football.
“James has addressed that whole issue in a very mature way.
“And from that point I’m very happy to announce James McClean is definitely involved.”
The game, however, looks to have come too soon for skipper Emmerson Boyce, who has been battling an ankle injury picked up against Nottingham Forest on September 30.
“We have been without Boycey for five or six weeks now,” added Rosler.
“This is a player who played 41 games for me last season, of which we won 20 of them.
“That speaks volumes, and it shows you how important he is for us and we have missed him.
“You do not achieve such statistics without being a key player. We were hoping he would be back earlier than this, but sometimes injuries need time to heal.
“Boycey needs to make sure he is mentally and physically ready to step into the first XI, because he sets such high standards for himself.”
Striker Andy Delort will also be absent with a back problem picked up in training.
“Andy was due to start at Brighton on Tuesday, but after training on Sunday I was told he would not be able to travel,” said Rosler.
“He has not trained since and he will not be involved on Friday.”
Meanwhile, Maynor Figueroa has extended his loan with Latics until the end of the year.
The Honduran returned to Wigan last month on a one-month emergency from Hull.
And all three parties have agreed to extend the arrangement after the defender slotted seamlessly back in to life at the DW.
Must admit you should start building from the back then you are guaranteed 1 of 2 results a draw or a win earlier in the season people said we were strong at the back , they must be watching a different game than me as i thought we have been poor in that position all season , I`ve every confidence we`ll get it sorted as in this league at the moment everyone is beating each other , top six on the cards for me but we need to turn it around and soon .IN UWE WE TRUST (wers me wine gone) :)
I would have agreed with you a few weeks ago, but it’s taking a bit too long to turn around for my liking. It will take some run now to get top 6. Not saying it won’t happen, but it looks a long way off right now.
Agree, and I think the next 5-8 games will determine the end of season outcome.
It will probably sort out the manager question as well maybe after tonight

Phylis you asked the question and it has been answered stop making yourself look even more stupid
I’ll be there.
BTW – there are only TWO actual derbies in Sport.
I’d disagree and say it’s three:
The Epsom Derby (The Derby Stakes)
Kentucky Derby
Derby County
A derby is a derby when it is deemed such by the Earl of Derby. Only two events have ever received such recognition. The derby that you refer too at Epsom and Wigan v St Helens.
The current Earl of Derby has confirmed that his family gave their name to only two sporting events; The Horse Race and the Rugby League match between St. Helens and local rivals Wigan.
well you learn some thing new every day the good Earl was obviously having an heavy day on the opium when he came up with that
