Rugby League chiefs at the Leeds HQ have announced that a record number of subscribers tuned in to watch the clash with Cronulla on Sky Sports. Close on 400,000 viewers watched Wigan beat the Australian Grand Final winners in the annual challenge game.
RL bosses see this as a vindication for the game, the future of which is under doubt as many of the top Aussies clubs have said they will not take part in future due to it clashing with their pre season preparations,
Sky’s antipodean broadcasting partner Channel Nine have not yet released viewing figures and are also considering their future options for this fixture, as the clash is not nearly as popular down under. A spokesman for GBRL said ” these figures show how popular the game is in the UK and hopefully will still be part of the RL calendar for years to come, we will look for talks with our Australian partners to see how we move forward.”
In other news Sky Sports are delighted with their latest venture, Monday evening saw the first ever live game from the Vitality Super league Ladies Netball competition, new franchises Wasps and Sirens played to a sold out Glasgow’s Emirates Arena and a live audience of over HALF a MILLION sky viewers, a great game saw a cracking battle as the Wasps ran out 57-43
