All keepers have bad patches at some point or another, although saying that, tonight and last week Al Habsi had actually made decent saves but had failed to clear the ball sufficiently. Hardly the work of a dodgy keeper.
Keepers rarely have competition at clubs – apart from the big clubs. It’s usually the first choice keeper and a young understudy – which is exactly what we’ve got.

I’d agree that Al Habsi has by no means suddenly become a dodgy keeper but ensuring that you clear the ball sufficiently after making a save is a basic part of goalkeeping – Tim Krul had had a similar save to make from (I think) Di Santo when it was still 0-0 & he made damn sure that it didn’t go back into the danger area so it was a poor mistake last night.
To go with a couple in his previous 2 games
For what it’s worth though I think that whilst he should have held Barry’s shot against City last week that led to the 1st goal there was nothing else that he could have done with Balotelli’s first follow up shot than what he actually did

He didn’t look too young to me ! I would hazard a guess at 40 yrs old ! B)

I’m on about Nicholls as well you know.

Just a question. How come Nicholls doesn’t play in the cup games which we now know are predominantly used for fringe players ? Seems a strange one to me that !

I also agree that al habsi hasn’t become a bad keeper overnight, but feel we need a strong & experienced number 2 to keep him on his toes. & as good as pollitt has been a terrific servant to the club, im not referring to him.

I’d guess it all boils down to money, and that’s why we have the arrangement we have.
I.m.o.best keeper we’ve had in my time watching Wigan.Granted he has made a couple of errors recently but lets also remember he is playing in the prem and not the lower leagues and i’m sure he’d be on a wish list of a few other premiership teams. We might be in the bottom five but as keepers go he’d be in the prems top 3 for me .

Because we would have needed to recall him from his loan spell at Northampton where he is currently getting a regular game.
Poor distributor of the ball, his kicking is shocking.
Seems prone to parrying/fumbling the ball.
Not sure he’s the best keeper we’ve had or not. Roy Carroll? John Filan? Is Ali better than them?
And when someone said they wouldn’t have any other keeper in the world ahead of him…..Casillas came to mind, as did Buffon, Petr Cech, and….and I know this is bizarre….Kasper Schmeichel.
Remember, Ali never got a sniff at Bolton when Juskaalainen was in front of him, so obviously Allardyce didn’t think he was that good.
Roy Carroll on TV now in goal for Olympiakos v Arsenal :)
He was as good a goalie as I’ve seen playing for us, but I think his attitude was a bit questionable. Do you remember him squaring up to De Zeeuw and having a right tantrum? And hasn’t he had some gambling problems or something?
Probably never reached the heights he was capable of. That said, he did have a spell at United and has played for some big clubs. Even had a spell with Bruce Rioch at Odense BK in Denmark, I think. Seem to remember he came on as a sub for his first Olympiakos appearance…..saving a penalty with his first touch.
Was the Reading play off Semi at the Madjeski his last game for us? If so, he possibly saved a penalty with his last touch for us…..unfortunately Reading knocked in the rebound. :(
