I think we would all agree that keepers do indeed make clangers from time to time as Wednesday night showed ( 3 proper howlers from 3 different keepers ) Now 2 very bad errors on the trot is slightly rarer and when these things happen people do indeed start to scrutinise. I would have thought that there will be some interested parties watching Ali very closely come Monday night ! My comments re possible complacency at being our only real first choice keeper were taken out of context the other day, as I meant that Ali does indeed need to know deep down that he isn’t the only real choice. I feel that a scenario like that is not healthy mentally anyway and a bit of competition is the key to keeping players on their toes ! I hope that clears things up a little ! He has been fantastic for us and I am a big fan of his and so I don’t want to see him getting complacent, and I don’t mean that in a bad way !
1 December 2012 at 12:58 am #97524“I wouldn’t take any other keeper to replace Ali and that’s how much we rate him,” Martinez insisted.
“He’s the perfect goalkeeper for ourselves – he’s someone who can fit in in the way we want to play.”
How anyone can not see the difference between the above comments and “I wouldnt swap him for any keeper in the world” is beyond me….
Sounds the same thing to me Salford, but as you say, it must be beyond you.[/quote]
Okay I will point out the instrumental part of Roberto’s comments.
He’s the perfect goalkeeper for ourselves
Roberto’s comments indicate he is a great keeper for us and in reality it would be damn hard for us to do better!
Does not mean he would not swap him for any keeper in the world.

Salford, I know you like arguing, but are you on a wind up?
Bobby saying “I wouldn’t take any other keeper to replace Ali”, surely means any keeper? If he is telling the truth, one can only presume any keeper in the world, unless he means any keeper from Jupiter or Mars?
I’d give it up now, you’re wrong, take it on the chin and find another thread to argue on ;)

Me on a wind up? never.
If Martinez would not swap Ali for any keeper in the world then I would have serious concerns about his ability to pick players.
I have a lot of faith in Martinez and this squad.
But would I swap him for Alex Ferguson and a host of elite players from round the world?
Yes in a heart beat.
3 December 2012 at 1:29 am #97589Lost count of the amount of great saves Ali has done for us… Two mistakes in a week and his ability is being debated?
I’m struggling to remember a better keeper for us? :silly:3 December 2012 at 2:42 am #97591Lost count of the amount of great saves Ali has done for us… Two mistakes in a week and his ability is being debated?

Filan was very good but in my opinion… he is our second best keeper. Most of his time with us was spent in the lower leagues so it makes it a little more difficult to say for defo. I’m sure theres a few prem clubs would take Ali, not too many came knocking for Filan.
3 December 2012 at 7:01 pm #97602Maybe at start of season. Not too many would now. His performance at Old Trafford was woeful too. Certainly the best I’ve seen in my 30 years of supporting club. Though Tony Penock takes some beating!
3 December 2012 at 7:47 pm #97603For me, Roy Carroll is the best goalkeeper that Latics have ever had. i think that the only thing that stopped him getting to the very top & for a long time was himself & his alleged demons (booze & gambling).
Dropped clangers too (the away league game at City in 1999 stands out) & had em at United to but you don’t break that club’s consecutive clean sheet record if you aint got somet about you
Al Habsi runs him second – the criticism of him seems harsh because of (in general) how well he’s played since joining us but in some ways its testament to that, that because he hasn’t hit those levels this season but still been putting in good performances more often than bad uns that it’s getting noticed
3 December 2012 at 8:20 pm #97605Carroll and Kirkland were both good keepers, but what puts Ali at the pinnacle is his positioning. He is virtually always in the right place, which means that on most occasions he can stop the shot. Yes – so, he has made a couple of clangers, but I’d rather that than him always being out of position.
I remember Roy Carroll’s positioning was very suspect at times, and Kirkland couldn’t move off the line.
I think we can allow Ali some slack. The old cliche is very true – if an attacker misses a goal we soon forget it. Midfielders can misplace passes and mistime tackles all the time and all is forgiven. But if a goalkeeper fumbles the ball then he is open to ridicule.
And just remember – we did have Mad Vlad in nets not so long ago. :woohoo:
4 December 2012 at 12:32 am #976093 cock ups in 3 games now.It gets worse !!!
4 December 2012 at 12:58 am #97615Let’s have a thread for every player so we can murder the lot of them shall we
4 December 2012 at 4:15 am #97644Rose tinted Lowey wont have a bad word said despite 4 defeats in the last 5 games plus Ali Al Habsi does indeed fcuk up in the last 3 ! He has no competition though for his shirt and so he is under no pressure ! Having pressure on a first choice player from a fringe player does actually have a positive effect on performances ! Newcastle had lost God knows how many on the bounce and were under pressure prior to tonight’s game but being the proverbial step ladder side that we are we took that pressure right off them ! QPR haven’t won a game all season ……I wonder ! If we oblige then we are going to be in pretty bad shape ahead of the Christmas campaign !
