And Phil, if your decision whether or not to buy a season ticket hinges on what contract someone who earns far more than any of us can dream of is offered when he is no longer up to the job, then I really think you need to reassess priorities.

I’m on the fence with this. Fully agree with those saying it could have been handled better, but I’m fully aware that we can’t throw money around willy nilly.

It’s sad, but business is business as they say.

Perhaps he doesn’t like the reality of being offered a wage commensurate with a 35yr old 3rd division player. If so, good luck to him finding another club willing to pay him what he thinks he is worth.

It would have been far better to have said we didn’t require his service or a year contract with a view to coaching or something but pay as you play?

If the club doesn’t “require his services”, why the fuck would they offer him another year with a view to coaching? It’s not a charity!

If they think he’s past it, he’s past it.[/quote]

My point being they’ve given him neither. It’s either a “we don’t need you” or “here’s a year to get you to decade at the club”. Pay as you play is a middle ground, offensive offer which is derogatory imo.

So what about these 15 players Sharp talks about us getting or bringing back the loan players on good contracts who were not deemed good enough last year?

Can’t have it all ways. We either are a compassionate family club who look after their own i.e. Caldwell or we aren’t.

So get those splinters out yer arse and take a side ;)

Well the players coming back will probably be on reduced wages as per their contracts and the 15 we bring in will be on league one wages.

We obviously feel that Boyce will offer valuable experience but will be nothing more than a backup player, and so we don’t want to commit to a big pay packet when we’re trying to sign 15 other players within our budget.

            #142350

Personally I don’t know whether Boyce has what it takes to be a success as a League One player next season – I do know that he looked awful last season & it wasn’t just his speed that was showing him up, it was his positioning & decision making. However people that have seen him in training every day are quite clearly seeing him as someone who is going to be a back up player if he stays – his pay as you play deal won’t be an “if you don’t play you get nowt” deal but more a lower basic with higher appearance fees & for a 36 year old with poor form over the last 12 months that makes sense

As for rewarding his loyalty with a better deal – as others have pointed out, Latics don’t have the cash to hand out big deals based purely on sentiment. Boyce’s loyalty has been rewarded over the last 9 years with a salary virtually all of us can only dream of, but also I have no doubt that he signed those deals because they were the best ones he was offered by any club & if a club had come along dangling a far better deal in front of him he would have left & I wouldn’t have blamed him

And people saying offer him a backroom role or coaching kids etc.. – Again Latics don’t have the money to create new roles for someone if they are happy with what they currently have in place & it may also not be what Boyce wants

The only reason we’re discussing this is because Boyce himself has openly discussed the details in his newspaper column. It’s a blatant attempt by Boyce to whip up the fans passion to try & get them to put pressure on the club to offer him a better deal & I suspect that he knows that there aren’t going to be many decent offers forthcoming to him from elsewhere (if as he says he could see the signs from January that the club wouldn’t renew his deal then you can bet your life that he’s had his agent scouting him around). In light of that I think Sharpe has got it spot on in publicly replying to Boyce with his “a final offer has been made & if he doesn’t like it that’s his choice” statement – it’s very much a “you can’t play us” statement

There can’t be any room for sentimentality in football

            #142351

My points precisely, TL. Spot on.

They feel they don’t need him, clearly. So, given they don’t want him at all (whihc is their right) then to offer him a pay as you play deal is quite a nice gesture, and not remotely derogatory. Entirely up to him whether he chooses to accept it or not.

As I said before, if he can get himself fixed up with another club on the deal that he wants then good luck to him. I just think that at 35 and performing as he did last season, my opinion is that we’d be better spending our money elsewhere.

Not ideal, I agree, and it would have been nice if things could have turned out differently but that’s the way of the world. We need to spend our limited money wisely -especially if Phil is no longer renewing his season ticket. ;)

A loyal player like Boycie would lend his experience to the youth side in more than one way.

How do you know that? He may be the world’s worst potential coach for all you know. His outburst on Twitter for a start indicates to me that he may lack the tact, professionalism and people skills. I may be wrong, but I don’t know. and neither do you.

I think the other thing that wont have helped the situation is the timing of the thing – he other week there was all that hoo-ha TIYL Boyce celebration pary … then the next week hes basically told hes not good enough. TBH I would be pretty “miffed” if it happened to me.

If somebody could just help me out with Caldwell being at the club without playing, being in charge of the under 8’s and then becoming manager, compared to us just basically letting our FA Cup winning captain go a year away from a decade at the club. Anyone?
I still think he can do a job in Div 1 and he is certainly no worse than Barnett or Kiernan, Taylor or Taylor-Sinclair, probably on a par with Pearce.

On another note, Boyce has a column in the paper, what do you want him to say, he’s buzzing that he’s had a pay as you play offer from the club/town he has done so much for? As far as twitter goes, he’s basically re-tweeted a few things.

The club just keeps shooting itself in the foot.

Not your call though, is it?

So far, I have only seen you and Phil who think he should be retained on footballing grounds, whereas there are hundreds of others (me included) who think it’s a shame he is going but accept the reasons why.

But you’re entitled to your opinion that he wasn’t totally blowing out of arse every time he played last season and that his fitness and pace will improve next season, lime some knd of Benjamin Button character.

That’s dead easy. He was under contract, but injured. Then he retired as a player. Then he was appointed manager, somehting he had clearly been lined up to do.

Not sure what your point is? Not a rare occurence, granted.

The one additional point is that Caldwell signed a new contract last summer.
Why did the club agree to this? Because they were probably looking to the longer term to bring him into the coaching set-up, therefore created a dual role.
