I said my season ticket was back on hold because the Boyce business has me thinking that there will be worse to come! I am not a blind faith merchant who would fork out the best part of £350 if a totally shite squad was assembled on the cheap whilst also understanding the position the club are now in re wage structure! I bet they bent over backwards to try and keep Fortuné here and what has he ever done for us?
The comments from the newspaper clip are predominantly against the club’s decision by the way! There does seem to be quite a few on here who will readily accept whatever the club throws at them though, they are the blind faith merchants ( Gotta get behind the club no matter what ) ! There is no common ground between them and the likes of me who has a voice! :) :)

And what possible grounds have you got for making that statement? Did they offer Fortune a pay as you play deal to see if he’d stay? No, have they bollocks. Hardly bending over backwards, that!
I’d like to think that they just fucked him off with no talks! Is there any evidence to say otherwise though? Have they just fucked off Kim and Kvist as well with no talks? Who knows? By me quoting “I bet” isn’t saying that I have any grounds whatsoever, the use of the word ‘Bet’ is also a view or opinion, especially about something that cannot be known at the present time! I can just imagine them trying to get him to stay albeit on the cheap!
Fairly pointless, then. Gratuitous and baseless slagging off, though there’s nothing new there, really.
What I do know is that we have signed a 32yr old midfielder( 33 by next season ) from Blackpool! The skies the limit now eh! Out with the old and in with the err old!
I genuinely have no idea why you bother watching Wigan at all, you moaning twat.

No wonder you never manage to see a whole game.
Bit over the top that ain’t it! You argue Boyce is too old and so I mention our latest acquisition who will be 33 come next season and your riposte is that!!
Big difference between 33 and 36. Plus, the lad was the best player on the pitch the last two times he played against us. Not saying much that, granted.

I’ll tell you what, I’ll just sit here and wait patiently for you to say something that’s not totally and utterly negative and then we’ll talk again.

    Take care, Phil ;)

I’m gonna be honest with you here, it’s a little hard to be positive about anything Wigan Athletic at the moment! Signing a 33 yr old Blackpool player just strengthens the ammunition that rival fans have against us in the piss taking stakes! We are a fucking laughing stock as it is!

      Well, we’d never have guessed.

Guess what, though? You’re right. It is hard.

But at least some of us give it a go.

Emerson had a perfect chance to show his loyalty and gratitude to the club who have kept him in a millionaire lifestyle. He could have accepted the offer put on the table for him.

At almost 36 and after some of his performances last season I can’t see the problem with him being offered a deal that pays him for the games he plays. There is no room for sentiment in football and I think we all know Boyces best days are well gone. He might get a one year deal at a club in our league but can’t see much else.

          #142399

I honestly cannot see why all the soul-searching about Boycie.

Over the last whatever number of years it is he has earned hugely more than any of us can dream of. In the Premier League starting salaries are around £1 million a year – and he was team captain. That’s at least £20,000 a week. How many of us earn much more than that in a year? And yet we, ultimately ones who pay the wages, are now supposed to be outraged that, having happily taken that money when times were good, he doesn’t want to take less when times aren’t so good? Even though he’s unlikely to take part to any significant measure.

And as for the difference between Caldwell and Boyce? Caldwell has always had an eye to coaching at the end of his playing career. He has been working his way through the badges – including not spitting his dummy when having to coach under-8s as part of the coaching requirements. The club have seen him as a potential asset for the future in coaching (maybe they never expected him to be manager so quickly, but that to me says a lot about how his positive attitude has come across) and so kept him on. At what pay, I don’t know, and nor do you.

Boyce has shown no interest in coaching. It may well not be for him. So he has no value going forward for the club, only a charge on stretched resources.

As I said above – there is no entry in club accounts for “sentimental value”.

Has this “laughable” offer been divulged anywhere, or is Boyce playing the fans like a well-loved fiddle to drum up sympathy?

Say he was on £20K a week and took a 40% cut in 2013 (after his cup-winning bonus), his basic would have been £12K a week. If the new contract offer meant he had to take a further 40% cut, his basic would have been £7200 a week – still earning more in a month than most of the supporters earn in a year.

His earnings over the past 9 years would be somewhere well above £5 million, so if he is crying poverty, I for one am not going to feel sympathetic.

I don’t think he is crying poverty but in any walk of life, if your wages are cut based on the needs of the business but you stick with them, show loyalty, always bang the drum of the business and do work for them outside of normal hours, you would be pretty pissed off if when they looked to get back on their feet they made you part time. Knowing they would be offering contracts to the likes of 32yr old Perkins from Blackpool plus (allegedly) 15 others.

That’s my take on it, maybe that makes me a compassionate person and somebody who understands and appreciates a loyal servant.

I genuinely worry about the running of our club and where we are headed under the current regime. Did Boyce not get on with Caldwell? Does Caldwell see him as a threat? I’d think we’d want the likes of Boyce at the club rather than journeymen and folk without years of the club at heart.

Others seem to accept whatever they are told and we’ve seen where that has got us.

I suspect it also makes you gullible and naive when it comes to running a football club.

Why are folk comparing footballer’s wages to the fan’s wages? Most players in the Conference earn more than us mere mortals!

              #142413

Boyce has been earning around £1 million in the Premier League.

Let’s say he had a 50% pay cut for relegation to the Championship, then another 50% to League One – that’s still £250,000.

The average salary for League One is £70,000

So Boyce would be taking up the allocated funds set aside for 3 other players, and the chances are he’d struggle get a game.

I suspect it has f’ck all to do with Caldwell and his relationship, but everything to do the club being sensible and not throwing precious money at sentiment.

Yay, I agree with you, Phil!! :)

More appropriate to compare Boycey’s wages with other League 1 players, as Standish does in his post.

Ok lets change the figures around and say whatever figures I want to pluck out of thin air and I win FFS! :cheer: If £70k is an average it doesn’t mean all the players in that division are earning it

I would argue that up until this point I have been far from gullible on all things Wigan Athletic and where we were headed. I wanted Malky gone after 5 games, no sentiment with me where none due!
