Ah – normality is restored :)
20 May 2013 at 4:56 pm #113975You can’t blame the FA cup on the way we played against an out of form Swansea side + without Michu and a 10 man QPR.
I would have sooner took a chance on a fit Golobart against Swansea over a hip injured and couldn’t run Caldwell, crazy.
20 May 2013 at 5:01 pm #113976It is a far worst defence then the one quazie bruce had. B)
Far cheaper one, too. Titus Bramble on £40k per week?? Do me a favour!
Bit harsh on Titus that. Yes it’s an obscene amount of money but under Steve Bruce, Titus Bramble was an absolute rock for us & was a vital cog in making Latics back line the 7th best defence in the division during Bruce’s full season in charge
Like you say, you get what you pay for. Titus was paid a lot of money & under Steve Bruce he showed why that was
Wanted a nice break from this board to avoid the manager merry go round etc…. Its just not going to happen is it.
Bramble was good for us but absolute rock? I think you are smoking absolute rock Tylders.
20 May 2013 at 5:30 pm #113977RELEGATION is a disaster for the town, like it or not the premier league filled the pubs and hotels with away punters and gave the town plenty of free promotion,no surprise to find the Martinez Luvvies in denial,if martinez said shit was white they would believe itBlackpool, Blackburn, Burnley and Bolton have all survived relegation. And Wigan are better placed than most – if not all – of those.
The Cup Final put Wigan in the full glare of the media. Perhaps we’ll get some tourists coming just to see the Cup.
Then there is the attraction of Wigan Pier for fans of our European opponents. Hasn’t anyone brewed a Cup Winners beer?

I’m disputing the opinion that Martinez has taken the club backwards when we have been preparing and half-expecting relegation ever since we got into the Premier League.

Without the cup, Wigan would have been playing Swansea instead of Millwall. They were in excellent form that day – and were able to field a back three plus two wing backs.
They had a much weakened squad when the time came to play Swansea. I thought Caldwell played against Swansea only because he was fitter than Golobart.

Are you on about health or looks ???

I’m sorry but under Steve Bruce he was.
Jittery under Hutchings but dropped a clanger in the first 30 seconds of Bruce’s first game & then he was quite clearly told “You – ball – get rid” & he never looked back. Bruce knew what he was good at & told him to do it & leave the ball playing to someone else
Until Martinez arrived & the mantra became to play it out from the back – not a criticism of Bobby’s philosophy but Titus Bramble is never gonna be able to play that way even long after hell has frozen over.
Mock my comment all you want but the stats speak for themselves – during that 08/09 season where he played virtually all of the games Latics only conceded 45 goals. That was less the same as Spurs & West Ham (who finished 8th & 9th), less than City (who finished 10th), less than Villa (who finished 6th) and only 8 more than Arsenal & Everton (who finished 4th & 5th) so I’d say “rock” is a pretty decent description of anyone who was a part of that defence.
Especially when held up against the goals conceded record of the following 4 seasons: 09/10 (79), 10/11 (61), 11/12 (62) & 12/13 (73)20 May 2013 at 7:26 pm #113987RELEGATION is a disaster for the town, like it or not the premier league filled the pubs and hotels with away punters and gave the town plenty of free promotion,no surprise to find the Martinez Luvvies in denial,if martinez said shit was white they would believe it

On the field, he has taken the club backwards regardless of whether the club has been expecting & half-preparing for relegation anyway – he took over a club that finished 11th & they’ll be starting next season in teh 2nd tier of English football.
That is going backwards whichever spin you try to put on it.Elsewhere the club has been making progress & thanks to both Bobby & Whelan the drop isn’t to be feared as much as it may have been before the purse strings were tightened but it is still a setback nonetheless & still a step backwards
20 May 2013 at 7:26 pm #113988My comment was not so much about the quality of the defence under Bruce, more that costs of it. Pay higher wages, you are more likely to get better quality.

The second bit seemed like a dig at paying that much for a player of Bramble’s ability. I’d say he was more than worth it under Bruce in comparison to the salary of some other footballers
Whether the club could afford it is another matter20 May 2013 at 7:56 pm #113994Did Titus win the player of the season award ?
20 May 2013 at 9:46 pm #114001Did Titus win the player of the season award ?I know Gary Caldwell did.
20 May 2013 at 9:57 pm #114003Whether the club could afford it is another matterOne that should not be brushed aside as you are teetering at the fact Bruce was a better Manager for us than Roberto.
Bruce would of took us down had he stayed and we would be in a much worse position than we are right now.
