6 June 2015 at 3:54 pm #142745It was the 3 nil Horc. We were non league at the time. It was in the FA Trophy. The terrible dart incident made the national newspapers. I think we played Lancaster away in the next round making headlines again by starting a fire in a ‘stand. Non League!
Oops Donny cant let you off with that one marrer. Northwich was in the F A Cup in 1981 abandoned after 70 odd minutes with us 3-0 up so we were very much a league team and I’m sure that was the game the copper copped the dart. Lancaster and Fleetwood were horrible away games back in the days and as you say saw some real trouble.
6 June 2015 at 4:37 pm #142746Nuneaton, was it the 3-0 or the 2-2 where the copper was lead away with a dart in the side of his nose?Another point from that tie horc, was’nt the 2-2 game played on Christmas Eve? something in the memory is telling me it was. Many games were lost to the weather that winter and there was an enormous fixture backlog.
8 June 2015 at 5:05 pm #142748I think my favourite memory of old SP was a non football related incident. Like others have said there was trouble everywhere you went away but sometimes it was in the stands as well. I remember (very early 70’s) this one guy looked out of his tree and was getting louder and more threatening. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw this copper gently sidling up to him from behind when all of a sudden this bloke pulled out a knife. Quick as a flash the copper had his truncheon out, back of the head and the bloke hit the floor like a sack of spuds. All over in an instant and everyone back watching the game after about 30 seconds. Thinking back now it was totally surreal.
8 June 2015 at 8:56 pm #142749The Bobby with the dart was in fact 74/75 in the Trophy and we won 4-2 at Northwich going on to play Lancaster away in the next round.

Right, been doing a bit of digging and according to one site the 2-2 was played on Jan 5th and the replay at Springy just 2 days later on the 7th (cannot remember that at all). It shows how far behind we were when we were playing a first round game in January.

Sorry Donny 1980 not 81.
9 June 2015 at 10:13 am #142752One unbelievable moment was the day we heard Latics had been elected to the league. After so many knock backs we were not even expecting it that year. Another turning point in Latics history and another exciting chapter in Latics history without a ball being kicked.

The league at last!!!I remember it well, I was in a History lesson at school when the teacher came over to me to tell me.
I’ve still got the ‘League at last’ book about the first season in the league.9 June 2015 at 5:18 pm #142756I’ve actually got “The League – At Last” in front of me as I read your post. I was looking something up a few days ago.

Although Boston won the title they knew their name wasn’t being put forward for election to the league because they had already been told thier ground wouldn’t be up to League standard but they weren’t in a position to make the neccessary improvements.
Fortunately for us we finished second and our name went forward because good old Springy was virtually up to standard anyway because of all the previous applications and we were eventually voted in after the second round of voting.12 June 2015 at 5:00 pm #142777I always assumed the northwich (police dart in face) FA cup match was in the 1978/79 season. It was, if memory serves me correct, one of my first ever away games. I didn’t see the incident as i was so small, but remember my dads mate turning round ti my dad saying “hey ste, theres a copper walking round with a dart in his face.”
12 June 2015 at 5:27 pm #142778Here are mine
1. Ben Watsons FA Cup Winner
2. Finally beating The Mancs and Maloneys goal.
3. The 5-3 win against Port Vale on Good Friday 1979. We were 3-0 down with 20 mins to go.
4. Beating Liverpool at Anfield. I watched the game in a pub in the Yorkshire Dales ………..on CeeFax !!!!
5. The first half destruction of Newcastle. Total football . We were magnificent 4-0 up at halftime.
12 June 2015 at 5:44 pm #142779One memory that will always stay with me was the victory over Sheff Wednesday in the FA Cup, and Maurice Whittles free kick. I spoke with him many years later about that when he was manager of JJB’s in Chorley.
Another thing from that day that stays with me was before the match.
We were stood on the Shevvy end and we saw a group of Wednesday fans come in at the Town End and one of them pulled one of the scaffolding poles out of the concrete crush barriers and headed towards the Pop side. Fortunately he got intercepted pretty quicly by the Plod.12 June 2015 at 11:24 pm #142785I always assumed the northwich (police dart in face) FA cup match was in the 1978/79 season.
