Yes… any thoughts on the actual advert?

A very good idea, let’s make no mistake about it the rugby are leagues ahead of Latics when it comes to advertising and marketing. Hopefully the new chief exec will sort it out.

I don’t blame other contributors on this thread for being cynical about it though because I’m sure if Latics had done this instead of the rugby, the rugby fans would be slagging off Latics saying it smacks of desperation.

Just like when Latics do ticket promotions yet when the rugby give away an entire stand it’s fantastic marketing

Can’t knock the rugby club for doing it though, it will “expose the brand” to yet more out of town fans. Maybe their entire support will come from Preston in a few years and then Maurice will move them in

Almost! You started off like an intelligent adult but slid into strange and slow child. Keep trying.

It’s not desperation it’s simply the rugby taking advantage of a cheap time slot.

That doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that effective which is why sports clubs don’t advertise on TV.

I take the point about differing perceptions however.

Latics average 18k-20k which is labelled poor by some while the rugby average 14k-16k which is considered magnificent by the very same people.

The excuse is football is the national sport but this omits the crucial point many Wiganers grew up supporting out of town teams which is a situation that will only change many years down the line.

On the flip side the rugby attract the vast majority of rugby supporters from the town which is why they target the likes of Bolton and Preston to expand their fanbase.

Likewise Latics get over 20k for an end of season TV game against Hull and the same people say we are desperate because jumior tickets were offered for £1. When the rugby gave away 5k+ tickets for the Harlequins game these people praised this as superb marketing.

Mick Hogan was the guy who shook things up at the rugby with concepts like the Big One and Community Day but with him departing they seem to be reverting more towards ticket giveaways and gimicks.

Hopefully Latics new Chief Executive does great things for the club.

Agreed. Fair play to Wigan for trying something new. First British sporting club to advertise a game on television.
No tickets were given away for the Harlequins game.
When were these ‘ticket giveaways’ you mention?

You mean a couple of sponsors paid a nominal fee to sponsor the St Georges Day game and in return were allocated a few thousand tickets apiece so technically they were purchased?

Or the thousands of tickets given to players and their families for the Community Day or the sports clubs given tickets for the Leeds game?

After a couple of early season 12k crowds the rugby took it upon themselves to boost attendances and I’ve always given them credit for that but jumping through hoops to claim these are not giveaways isn’t fooling anyone.

The rugby know with so few fixtures they only need put a huge effort into 2 or 3 games to see the average jump from 12k-13k to 15k-16k.

                    It’s a clever marketing tactic.

Expect a one line reply from our rugby friend in a minute which attempts to dismiss your argument without giving any relevant reasoning as to why

Purchased. So they weren’t given away.

No tickets were given away. Of course, if you can prove otherwise and back up your claim then I’ll gladly admit I’m wrong.

Yes, as another poster put it, the Wigan marketing team has come on leaps and bounds over the past few years. Since Eric Pollard took over from Whelan they’ve certainly got their act together.

My brother works at Heinz and I can confirm that he and his family were all given free tickets to attend the Harlequins game. Indeed he confirmed that the whole of Heinz had free tickets given away to them.

                        Hope that helps

You are obviously well upto speed on all things rugby related.

You know the St Georges Day game was a marketing excerice were a couple of sponsors were given tickets as part of a package so they were technically purchased. Don’t you think the rugby would do similar every game if it was such a money generator?

You also know the Community Day saw a couple of thousand players and their families take in the game with complimentary tickets.

It’s like those discussion about professional footballers coming from Wigan which descend into farce because some rugby fans won’t given an inch of ground to Latics fans.

You have to conclude some rugby fans really do believe only a couple of thousand Wiganers watch Latics while there is something in Wiganers DNA preventing them from playing professional football.
