Well Mr Whelan has agreed to sell and the deal has to be completed by the 14th. So come next Thursday we should have new owners and all will become clear.So what happened?
Nothing had to be completed by the 14th. But it is true to say tonight, or at the latest, Saturday, will be the last home game before ownership change goes through.
The company owned by Stanley Choi is listed on the HK Stock Exchange. Nothing at all can be said until the deal, if any, is formally announced to them, and that will only be done when every i is dotted and every t crossed.
The announcement the other week was quite proper in informing the Stock Exchange that formal negotiations had started, and the technicality was that Latics agreed not to talk to any one else before 14 February and Choi’s company had the chance to put their bid forward. That’s all. If there were no other bidders anyway then the point is irrelevant.
We will hear nothing at all (to protect anyone involved from accusations of insider dealing) until everything is sorted, and who knows how long that will take.
We will just have to sit and wait.

Yep, we normally sit in the overdraft. Will be interesting to see if the deal includes the debt or if it is going to be cleared by the Whelan family presale which would explain why they’ve sold off some shares in dw sports.
I wasn’t going to get involved in this but I can’t help myself.
With all due respect to Whelan and his family they have openly said they aren’t willing to put anymore money into the club. If you listened to Martinez last night he basically said that winning the fa cup was the culmination of everything that DW wanted to do in football which is fair enough. I will be the first to admit I’ve questions about the management of the club the last few years but as an owner it is his and the family’s perogative to do what they want.
As for the new owners (if it goes through) well as long as they come in with a long term plan and not a bit of short termism then it can only be a good thing. Right now we are on the crest of a wave again and will be featuring prominently in the sports media all over the world. No better time to complete the takeover and use the momentum going forward to increase the overseas fan base etc.
As for why us, depending on the deal they could be buying a debt free club with a good infrastructure in place (or being built).
Well if that City win doesn’t convince the those in HK to take over the club nothing will. Lots of clubs just hover around season after season doing sod all but with at least with Latics you get a full roller coaster ride with huge lows and ultra massive highs.
