we are a much better side with him on the field though as we would be with Jacobs Massey and Grigg as well.
2 January 2019 at 6:04 pm #174711we are a much better side with him on the field though as we would be with Jacobs Massey and Grigg as well. And the results and performances showed that at the beginning of the season. Was Paul Cook inept during that period of games?. As people have pointed out, the squad is not as good as I and many others thought it was. Put that down to Cook if you must, as he bought many of them. I personally hope he gets the full season to do what he set out to do, keep us in this league. Hopefully when some of our better players come back and a few more signings come in we can start to consolidate our position in this league.

What a journey!2 January 2019 at 6:06 pm #174712Grigg doesn’t play because Cook prefers the zip lob long ball hit n hope tactic that doesn’t suit Grigg or MacManaman.
The absence of a playmaker in mid field will tend to make for a long ball approach no matter who the manager is.He prefers the older “I’ve worked with him at ……” Type of player.
Most managers look towards players they’ve previously worked with so this is not exclusive to Cook.I’m sorry but to blame “mindset” when tatically were inept is nothing more than excuse. He’s filled the squad with players who he thinks are good enough and those who weren’t even given a glimmer of a chance are shipped out as fast as fook or are they players bought in by others ?.
How do you know he ever thought they were good enough? Maybe they were the only players available at the price or willing to come to Wigan Athletic. As for players that were shipped out how do you know the reasons why those decisions were made. Maybe Cook didn’t have any say in the matter. Players leave clubs for all kinds of reasons which may not necessarily have anything to with their perceived playing ability.I’ve seen enough recently to see the players have also had a enough so it’s time for a change and others given a chance.
Who might these others be that you think deserve a start. And Sammy, if better service was given to our forwards (width and played in) rather than Peter Kay it up front would you prefer Grigg or Garner on the end of it ?.
I’m no great fan of Garner but Grigg has missed a fair few “sitters” this season, chances that many on here claim are his forte.Griggs not playing because that’s Cooks preferred option, a league 1 – 2 tactic wack it up there and prey
So, when we started this campaign with a fully fit squad playing an open style of play and winning a few matches you think Cook then decided to reverted to a “wack it up there” style because that was always his preferred option? The team needs player investment. Whether the new owners are willing to fund that at this stage and will entrust that to Cook remains to be seen.
2 January 2019 at 6:23 pm #174713we are a much better side with him on the field though as we would be with Jacobs Massey and Grigg as well.Although Massey is a trier, I can’t understand this ‘love in’ people have for him.
He wasn’t good enough for League One last season and was chastized and criticized by many on numerous occasions for his inept performances.
How come he is now being seen as a messiah?
I would pick Macca over Massey any day of the week.
Massey is no more than a squad player like various others, who should only get a game if others are injured or suspended.
He is one player that we really should be looking at shipping out and replacing.
Unfortunately there are at least another 7 or 8 that should also be moved on, but I suppose with finances as they are we will just have to hope the manager finds the right combination, formation and tactics.
After 20 odd games though, I won’t be holding my breath as he has not given us a glimmer of hope recently.2 January 2019 at 6:25 pm #174714I was one who chastised him last season, but he started this season on fire and we have evidently missed his pace in our attack as it is as many have said a bit more laboured nowadays.

I am a little worried now that even with everyone fighting fit and back we may not see the form demonstrated early doors. At that stage Cooky was attempting to play the same game as last season and had the momentum of that fabulous season with the side. Had we not been blighted with injuries I do believe we would still be in the top half. The injury crisis changed all that with squad players not being able to replicate the form of the players they replaced. That’s resulted in a different set up and a different more negative approach to matches. Are the players coming back capable of playing to a different slower more defensive way than when they were having success is a really hard one to speculate. I pray they can or the manager can return to a more positive high pressing game more suited to them or our pain is going to get greater.2 January 2019 at 7:22 pm #174717Leave Cook to do what he set out to do is a fine sentiment. If by end of the month we are still in this freefall and hovering in and around the trap door would you still be happy for him to continue???…..

What a journey!3 January 2019 at 9:44 am #174737Mid table ???? Seriously??? Based on current status, 2 wins in 17 and an away record bad beyond belief!!!!!!!!!.Roll me one as well……Must be all those “winnable “games on the horizon fuelling your optimism. Love you to be right, hopefully we won’t be keeping Bolton company in the drop zone come end January. Mind you “he’s the right man to get us out of league 1” will be the next tripe you’ll announce.
3 January 2019 at 11:15 am #174738I’ve seen the type of player Cook prefers and the style of football he prefers to play in the Championship, it’s non inspiring and some of those players are not good enough.
If you owned the club would you hand over your cash to him and say strengthen or would you prefer to give it to someone else and try and bring life back into the squad ?.Cooks not a bad manager, it’s just not happening for him at Wigan.
I personally think he’s a game or two left in him. A thrashing as West Brom would probably seal his fate.As for Massey ?, I’ve got to agree. I thought he was pi55 poor till his form picked up just before he got injured. Looks like he’s out again same injury.
In the form were in I can only see a possible 7 points from out next 8 games and that’s been generous.
If Cook stays then I wish him all the best and hope he can keep us up , how ? Tbh I don’t think he knows himself because his style of player and football stinks3 January 2019 at 5:44 pm #174743Mid table ???? Seriously??? Who knows what might happen, its all about enjoying the journey be it on an upward thrust or a downward surge. I don’t like being on a losing run but can understand the reasons behind it. Cook has never managed at this level and is currently learning the hard way. To his credit he didn’t wallow in the good start to the season and in his post match interviews often said it was an unforgiving league with a bad run being just round the corner. Perhaps fans like you didn’t take notice of those words and got carried away with the home record and away win at Stoke. Let’s hope a good run is just round the corner, players back fit and a couple of good signings might get you and others behind the manager and team again.

What a journey!4 January 2019 at 12:22 am #174752Easy to say in retrospect. But when we where on that good run it was the time to say we’ve set our standards, now we want to maintain them. Realistically I don’t think anyone expected a sustained play-off push. But mid-table was, and still is, entirely realistic.
During the season I’ve glanced over at the Blackburn forum and they’ve always demanded a play-off push. Unrealistic you may say, but with a similar squad to ourselves, they are now firmly encamped in mid-table. 8pts ahead of us, and if results go as I expect in January, that could be upto 15pts.
Hopefully that’s not the case and we turn it around. For me Blackburn are the club we should be benchmarking ourselves against. Right now we are scrapping around with, amongst others, a Bolton team in utter turmoil and a Rotherham outfit with a fraction of our resources.
4 January 2019 at 1:39 am #174756Is that the same Blackburn who we played off the park? Take their front 4 out and see how well they do.
The cook out brigade keep saying we can’t mention injuries but its a massive massive part of why we are playing as we are. Would Liverpool be banging them in with Origi up top all the time? No.
4 January 2019 at 2:37 am #174760What injuries affect us so badly in the last say 6 games ??? Powell ,Jacobs??? There we have it .All will return to normal when those 2 return. Signings is the key….but will he have any input ?

The manager can’t fully be held responsible for the injuries, but the other three reasons are his responsibility totally. -
