Big gamble for them. Villa did similar, and when they failed to get promoted, suddenly their financial situation became a major concern.
As for IEC….the way I see it is like this. At the moment, its all too quiet for anybodys liking. Nobody knows yet if they intend to support Cook with some financial outlay, or even sack him, and bring in a new guy who they will then give some money to for recruitment. Depending who that is, may tell us what their real intention is. If, for example, its Unsworth, I could imagine itll ve minimal and our targets will be the likes of Everton U23’s, Jonjo Kenny, and suchlikes. This is the cheaper option. If we make a serious move at attracting a bigger name, the likes of David Moyes or Mark Hughes, both are going to want a higher salary, and some guarantee of a serious level of investment funds for transfers.
But this is all ifs, buts and maybes. At this stage, Cook is still in charge, as far as we know. Or has it already been decided internally and theyre waiting to get todays game out of the way before an announcement? Maybe. Whatever todays result, I think its irrelevant with regard to our leagye form.
What we dont want is a ‘Lieutenant Dyke’ situation, where Cook is neither sacked, nor backed. A no decision made, situation. Cook still here and no recruitment going into Jan 31st will be good for nobody.
Gut instinct…Cook will go, but might not be into after next weeks Villa game. Cue then a week of uncertainty, before a new man comes in and has around 10 days to bring in players that will make a difference. Im seeing clubs are acting early this year in securing their targets. I feel that by the time we make the decision, we will then have to take the scrags, the unknown loans and even pay more than we would want for a player.But ultimately, IEC need to come out and speak a bit more.
